An effective method of detecting inter-turn short circuits on round rotor windings is described. Shorted-turns can have significant effects on a generator and its performance. A method of detecting inter-turn short circuits on rotor windings is described. The approach used is to measure the rate of change of the air-gap flux density wave when the rotor is at operating speed and excitation is applied to the field winding. The inter-turn short circuits sensor for synchronous generator's field winding has been developed. The sensor, installed in the generator air-gap, senses the slot leakage flux of field winding and produces a voltage waveform proportional to the rate of change of the flux. For identification of reliability for sensor, a inter-turn short circuits test was performed at the West-Inchon combined cycle power plant on gas turbine generator and steam turbine generator. This sensor will be used as a detecting of shorted-turn for field winding of synchronous generator. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and operation of a sensitive inter-turn short circuits detector. In this paper, development of inter-turn short circuits sensor for field winding of synchronous generator and application in a field.
In the case of the transformers including the delta winding such as a three-phase Y-Y-$\Delta$ transformer, a delta winding current flows in the delta windings. The delta winding current of a three-phase Y-Y-$\Delta$ transformer is decomposed into a non-circulating current and a circulating current. The former can be estimated directly from the line currents, but the latter can not. This paper proposes an estimation method for a circulating current of a Y-Y-$\Delta$ Transformer. A first order differential equation for the circulating current is derived by applying the Kirchhoff's voltage law on the loop of the delta side. The circulating current can be estimated by solving the differential equation. Various test results indicate the algorithm can estimate the circulating current accurately even under over-excitation and magnetic inrush.
This paper presents a novel hybrid pole BLSRM (Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motor) and its radial force control scheme. The proposed hybrid pole BLSRM has separated radial force poles and rotating torque poles. According to the FEM analysis, the proposed BLSRM has an excellent linear characteristic of radial force and controllability that is independent from the torque current. The radial force can be produced by the radial force winding which is wound at the separated radial force poles. The rotating torque is produced by the excitation current of the torque windings which are wound at the torque pole. The proposed radial force control scheme is independent of the phase torque winding current. A simple PID controller and look-up table are used to maintain a constant rotor air-gap. The proposed BLSRM and its radial force control scheme are verified by FEM analysis and experimental tests.
In this paper, by designing the width of the stator coil, double sided excitation LDM with multi-separated winding which is possible to obtain the constant thrust force is proposed. Using Permeance method, equvalent magnetic circuit method, Maxwell 2D, which is the magnetic field analysis package, we were analyzed and proved the validity of design process, also the characteristics of LDM according to magnet vs. coil width ratio of LDM was almost in accord with the experiment results.
Permanent magnet flux switching motor (PMFSM) is a novel double salient machine which employs PMs instead of field winding for excitation. PMFSM contains only one set of armature winding, thereby features simple control strategy, low cost power inverter and substantial high efficiency. Due to the unique double salient structure and operation principle, the generated cogging torque in PMFSM is critical and quite different compared to the traditional PM machines. This paper presents and investigates various design techniques for reducing cogging torque in PMFSM. Firstly, an analytical model is proposed to study the influence of different methods on cogging torque. Then the optimal design parameters for minimizing cogging torque are determined by the analytical model, which significantly reduces the computational efforts. At last, the cogging torque with different design approaches are simulated by FEA along with the average output electromagnetic torque, which validates the analysis above.

The method to determine the operating current of HTS magnets needs to be different from that of LTS magnets. This paper presented estimation of the critical current of pancake windings. The pancake windings can be excited by a single power source or by multiple power sources. Critical currents were determined by using field dependent E-J relation. For the better estimation of the critical current, a new method to define the magnetic field of the HTS wire has been proposed. Calculated critical currents of pancake windings were compared with measured ones of the HTS BSCCO magnet consisting of 10 pancake windings. According to the test results, the estimated critical currents of pancake windings agreed well with that of measured ones. Effects of the single and multiple power source excitation on the critical currents have been also examined.

This paper proposes a performance improvement of synchronous generator using exciter control with field coils parameter estimation technique. In general, the generator excitation system controller uses the PID controller. When the Field winding impedance changed, the PID gains must be changed. General method is difficult to apply varying capacity of the synchronous generator. The proposed control method determine automatically measure the internal impedance of the synchronous generator's exciter and configure the controller. This method can be applied regardless of the generator capacity. So it is possible to apply a variety of synchronous generator systems. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulations and experiments.
This paper proposes an estimation method for a circulating current of a Y-${\Delta}$ Transformer. The delta winding current can be decomposed into the two components i.e. a non-circulating component and a circulating component. The former can be estimated using the line currents. However, the latter can not be estimated directly using the line currents. A first order differential equation for the circulating current is derived by applying the Kirchhoff's voltage law on the loop of the delta side. The circulating current can be estimated by the solving the differential equation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated under various conditions including magnetic inrush and over-excitation. The algorithm can estimate the circulating current very accurately even under magnetic inrush and over-excitation.

In general, the realization of high performance brushless permanent magnet motors which are widely used in servo drive is focused on the linear control for ripple-free torque. This is also the main problem that should be solved in all AC motors including induction motor to achieve high performance control, and recent papers deal with this problem. In this paper, the novel optimal excitation scheme of brushless permanent magnet motor producing loss-minimized ripple-free torque based on the d-q-0 reference frame is presented including 3 phase unbalanced condition. The optimized phase current waveforms that are obtained by the proposed method can be a reference values and the motor winding currents are forced to track it by delta modulation technique. As a results, it can be shown that the proposed work can minimize the torque ripple by the optimal excitation current for brushless permanent magnet motor with any arbitrary phase back EMF waveform. Simulation and experimental results prove the validity and practical applications of the proposed control scheme.

This paper describes the performance analysis and design of single-phase self-excited induction generators. In this study, it is proposed to design the proper capacitance for self-excitation and voltage regulation, also. This methods are based on the induced MMF equations between main and the auxiliary winding. For the least influence between the two capacitors, the self-excited capacitor is selected under no load condition, while the series capacitor is designed under loaded condition. For the steady state analysis, the equivalent circuit of single-phase induction generators is used as circuit modeling using the double-revolving field theory. The validity of proposal methods and designed generator system will be confirmed by experimental and computed results.
