From August 2007 until September 2008, 5m${\times}$5m quadrat was established in native area of Angelica gigas in order to record a dominants and coverage, and soil factors at 20 sites. It was found that the altitude in the distributed areas for Angelica gigas population was 710m or more. Angelica gigas population was classified into Parasencio auriculata var. kamtschatical dominant population, Pseudostellaria palibiniana dominant population, Isodon excisus dominant population and typical dominant population. In the site of study, soil pH, electrical conductivity, soil organic matter, available phosphorous, and exchangeable potassium, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium, exchangeable natrium concentration and total nitrogen were ranged from 5.1~6.2, 0.1~0.79dS/m, 2.21~22.11%, 9.56~37.97mg/kg, 1.85~23.88cmol+/kg, 0.21~1.18cmol+/kg, 1.07~5.09cmol+/kg, 0.04~0.14cmol+/kg and 0.09~1.04% respectively. The Parasencio auriculata var. kamtschatical dominant population was found in area of high altitude and had high slope degree. But Pseudostellaria palibiniana dominant population was found in area of low altitude and low slope degree. Isodon excisus dominant population was found to have higher soil pH and exchangeable potassium concentration than the other dominant population.
In this experiment, the litters of each five species of neadle-leaf trees and broad-leaf trees were laid on each pot soils, which had same soil conditions, is the green house and the sil fertility of each pots were determined after four years. Chemical properties among each pot soils under litters of needle-laef trees showed remarkable different values in the pH, base exchange capacity, total exchangeable base, base saturation, organic matter, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium and calcium, and that of broad-leaf trees showed respectively significant difference. The content of chemical components, such as total exchangeable base, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and exchanbeable potassium, between pot soils under litters of the needle-leaf trees and the broad-leaf trees were significant at the 0.01 and 0.05 levels of the statistical probability. The fertility of soil under the influence of decayed fallen leaves is the highest value in the posts of broad-leaves and next to the pots of needle-leaves and the control pots the lowest. The pH value of the soil with various kinds of fallen leaves showed little difference among themselves, but it especially approached in the broad leaves plots gradually to neutral and hte non-treated plot showed acidity. Lespedeza bicolar and Castanea crenata are supposed to contribute to the fertility of soil. Pinus rigida showed excellent exchanged properties of soi. The leaves of Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus koraiensis did not contribute much to the promotion of fertility of soil.

This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of potassium fractions and to establish the soil chemical indices for assessing potassium availability in upland soil. Soil samples were collected from 66 vegetable crop fields of Chungbuk Jungweon, Jeonbuk Imsil and Kyengbuk Euiseong and these samples were analyzed water soluble(W. S. -K), exchangeable(Exch. -K) and nonexchangeable potassium(Nonex. -K). The distribution of potassium fractions was examined for soils having different physico-chemical properties and compared with the soil parameters related to the potassium availability. 1. The distribution ranges of W.S.-K, Exch.-K and Nonex.-K were 0.07~1.42, 0.27~2.30, and 0.84~4.74me/100g, and average contents of relevent fractions were 0.40, 1.03 and 2.37me/100g respectively. 2. Contents of W.S.-K and Exch.-K were decreased with increasing soil pH, CEC, Exch. Ca and Exch. Mg contents but Nonex. -K showed a low correlationship with these factors. 3. Exch.-K content slightly inereased with increasing clay content, while W.S.-K and Nonex. -K contents were grandually decreased with clay contents. 4. The relationship between W.S.-K and Exch.-K was significant and W.S.-K was released from soil at 0.23me/100g content of Exch.-K 5. Contents of W.S-K and Exch.-K showed high correlationship with soil chemical parameters such as ratio of exchangeable cations(K/Ca+Mg), ratio of exchangeable cation equivalent[$K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg}}:(me/100g)^{1/2}$], potassium exchangeable free energy(${\Delta}F=RT$ 1n $K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg}}$ : calories/mole) and saturation percentage of potassium($Exch.K/CEC{\times}100$), and these factors were considered to be good parameters for assessing soil potassium availability.
Based on the concentration of $^{40}K$ naturally occurring radioisotope of potassium, a method for the determination of total potassium in soils and plants was developed. The method was extended to evaluate the potassium supplying power of soils by taking the ratio of exchangeable potassium to total potassium $(K_{ex}/K_t)$, termed the potassium buffering capacity. Using this as index, it was observed that the release of potassium from soil fellows the from order reaction. A linear relationship was found between the potassium buffering capacity and the release constant of potassium or mica content of the clay. Similarly the potassium buffering capacity was also closely correlated with total uptake of potassium by rice plant. Hence it is concluded that the method for determining of the potassium buffering capacity could be veil applied to characterize the potassium availability of soils. The method for the determination of potassium is characterized by (1) The efficient measurement of the weak beta activity emissions from the samples, (2) identification of $^{40}K$, (3) calculation of total potassium content using the proportional constant of $^{40}K$ of samples to that of the standard. Difference in the potassium supplying power of soils due to soil types was also evaluated with the use of this technique. The degree of the potassium supplying power was in the order of soil types as red-yellow podzolic and lateric soils, basaltic materials(Rvd)> low-humic gley and alluvial soils, alluvial plains and food plains(Apa)> low-humic gley soils, nearly level to sloping local alluvial plains and slopes(Afb)> low-humic gley and alluvial soils, fluvio-marine plains (Fma).

The application of potassium above the optimum level may cause the inhibition of plant growth, fertilizer loss, and environmental pollution. Therefore, application rate of K fertilizer should be recommended on the basis of soil test. In order to determine critical K content in soils causing growth inhibition of vegetables, $1m^2-pot$ experiments with Chinese cabbage and radish were accomplished with various K-application rates. The threshold concentrations of exchangeable potassium causing the inhibition of plant growth were $0.96cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for Chinese cabbage in spring, and $1.28cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ for radish in autumn. Above those concentration levels, the yields of them were decreased with the increase of potassium levels in soils. Germination rate of Chinese cabbage in spring decreased with increase of the electrical conductivity (EC) of soils due to application of potassium fertilizer. In the harvesting stage, the potassium contents of plant were increased with the increase of K application rate while plant uptake of nutrients was decreased at the K adjustment level of over $2.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$.

Soil nutrient management is important to maintain the constant productivity of seedling production in the nursery for successful forest restoration. This study investigated the effects of organic manure and chemical fertilizer application levels on the growth, soil properties, and nutrient concentrations of yellow poplar seedlings. One-year-old yellow poplar seedlings were treated with the combination of 3 level organic manures(0, 5 Mg/ha, 10 Mg/ha; mixture of poultry manure, cattle manure, swine manure, and sawdust) and 3 level nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium(NPK) chemical fertilizers(0, 1x(urea, $30g/m^2$; fused superphosphate, $70g/m^2$; potassium chloride, $15g/m^2$), 2x). Organic manure significantly increased the soil pH and the concentrations of nitrogen, available phosphorous, exchangeable potassium, calcium, and magnesium. In contrast, the NPK chemical fertilizer decreased the soil pH and exchangeable calcium concentration, did not affect the soil concentrations of nitrogen and magnesium, and increased the concentrations of available phosphorous and exchangeable potassium. Both organic manure and NPK chemical fertilizer treatments increased the seedling height, root collar diameter, and dry weight by 39% and 25%, respectively. The treatment with manure 5 Mg/ha and NPK 2x chemical fertilizer mostly increased seedling dry weight by 2.6 times more than that of the control. Compared to the effects of the fertilization treatments on the soil properties, the effects on nutrient concentrations in the leaves were relatively small. These findings indicate that organic manure that was derived from livestock byproducts and sawdust can be utilized with chemical fertilizer to improve seedling production as well as conserving soil quality.
