Indoor radon and thoron from building materials: Analysis of humidity, air exchange rate, and dose assessment

  • Building materials contribute significantly to the indoor radon and thoron levels. Therefore, parameters that influence the exhalation rates of radon and thoron from building material need to be analyzed closely. As a preliminary study, the effects of humidity on exhalation rates were measured using a system with an accumulation chamber and RAD7 detector for Korean brick, Korean soil, and Indonesian brick. Resulting doses to a person who resides in a room constructed from the building materials were assessed by UNSCEAR method for different air exchange rates. The measurements have revealed that Korean brick exhaled the highest radon and thoron while Indonesian brick exhaled the lowest thoron. Results showed that for a typical low dense material, radon and thoron exhalation rate will increase until reached its maximum at a certain value of humidity and will remain saturated above it. Analysis on concentration and effective dose showed that radon is strongly affected by air exchange rate (ACH). This is showed by about 66 times decrease of radon dose from 0.00 h-1 to those of 0.50 h-1 ACH and decrease by a factor of 2 from 0.50 h-1 to those of 0.80 h-1. In case of thoron, the ACH doesn't have significant effects on effective dose.

3-분할 문제의 상자 채우기-교환 알고리즘 (Bin Packing-Exchange Algorithm for 3-Partition Problem)

  • 본 논문은 NP-완전으로 다항시간 알고리즘이 알려져 있지 않은 3-분할 문제(TPP)에 대한 선형시간 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 본 논문은 기존에 알려진 다항시간 알고리즘인 최대-최소치와 제3의 숫자 합을 이용하는 MM법이 갖고 있는 해를 구하지 못하는 문제점을 개선한 역추적 법을 제안하였으며, 또한 역추적 법을 적용한 MM의 문제점도 개선하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 내림차순 정렬된 S 집합을 3-분할하여 순방향, 역방향과 최대 여유량 순서인 최적합 배정 법으로 배정한 결과 10개 데이터 중 5개 데이터인 50.00%에 대해서는 최적 해를 찾을 수 있었다. 나머지 5개 데이터에 대해서도 최소 1회, 최대 7회의 잉여 상자와 부족 상자 간 숫자 교환으로 최적 해를 찾을 수 있는 성능을 보였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 n개 데이터를 3-분할한 m=n/3 보다도 적은 O(k)의 선형시간 수행 복잡도로 단순 배정과 교환 최적화를 수행하는 알고리즘으로 TPP가 NP-완전이 아닌 P-문제인 다항시간 알고리즘이 존재할 수 있음을 보였다.

Effects of endurance training for 4weeks on resting metabolic rate and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption in mouse

  • This study assessed the amount of energy consumed and fat deposition after endurance training in order to review the effect of 4-week endurance exercise on resting metabolic rate of a mouse during and after exercise and the effect of exercise. A total of 19 seven-week-old ICR male mice were used as the study subject. Those mice were divided into sedentary group (Sed) and trained group (Tr) after a week of environment adaption. The Tr group was trained with endurance exercise five times a week for four weeks. Weight and the amount of food intake were daily weighed and resting metabolic rate and metabolic rate after exercise were assessed before starting exercise and on the fourth week after training. Metabolic rate during exercise were measured four weeks after training. At the end of breeding period, statistically significant difference was shown in weights of trained and sedentary groups (p < 0.05). During a resting period, no significant difference was shown in oxygen intake, respiratory exchange ratio, and the amount of carbohydrate and fat oxidized. Moreover, no significant difference was shown in excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) of an hour period after training. In contrast, the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) was approximately 11.1% higher in trained group after training compare to before. However, there was no significant difference in respiratory exchange ratio and carbohydrate and fat oxidization. During exercise, oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide production, and respiratory exchange ratio in energy metabolism during exercise showed no significant difference. However, significant difference was exhibited in the amount of fat oxidized in both groups. Summing up those results, endurance exercise could be concluded to be effective in weight control. However, weight loss is thought to be resulted from increase in fat oxidization during exercise unlike the conclusion made from previous studies where weight loss is prominently influenced by energy metabolism during a resting period and increased fat oxidation during post-exercise recovery. All experimental procedures were carried out at the Animal Experiment Research Center of Konkuk University. This study was conducted in accordance with the ethical guidelines of the Konkuk University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

  • 톨루엔에 녹인 천연고무를 탄소가루의 결합재로 사용하여 바이오센서를 제작하였을 때, 반죽은 용매가 증발한 후 기계적 물성을 보였다. 이 특성은 탄소반죽전극 실용화의 선행 조건을 만족시키는 것으로, 이 특성의 활용성을 살펴보기 위하여 과산화수소 정량을 위한 바이오센서를 제작하고, 그것의 전기화학적인 정량 및 정성적 특성을 파악하기 위하여 여러 가지 속도론적 파라메타, 즉 대칭인자(0.37), 교환전류밀도($i_0$, $0.075mAcm^{-2}$), 이중층의 축전용량($C_d$, $9.7{\times}10^{-3}F$), 시간상수(${\tau}_A$, 0.92 s), 최대전류($i_{max}$, $5.92{\times}10^{-7}Acm^{-2}$), Michaelis 상수($K_M$, $1.99{\times}10^{-3}M$) 및 기타 상수들을 도출하였다. 이 실험적 결과는 천연고무가 탄소가루의 결합재로 활용될 수 있음을 보여 주었다.

이온교환수지를 이용한 새로운 오메프라졸 복합체 개발 (Development of New Omeprazole-lon Exchange Resin Complex)

  • Omeprazole(OMZ)-cholestyramine(CHL) and various OMZ-Dowex resin complexes were prepared by reaction between OMZ and activated resins in 0.1N NaOH solution. And their physical properties were tested by means of infrared(IR), differential scaning caloimeter(DSC), X-ray diffraction. Chemical stability of OMZ-CHL was increased markedly compared with OMZ and the decomposition of OMZ-CHL followed the pseudo first-order kinetics and the rate constants were $2.743{\times}10^{-4}/day$ at $20^{\circ}C$, $7.83{\times}10^{-3}day^{-1}$ under 80% RH and $1.68{\times}10^{-2}day^{-1}$ under UV radiation, respectively. On the other hand, the rate constants of OMZ were $2.996{\times}10^{-4}day^{-1}$ at $20^{\circ}C$, $1.17{\times}10^{-2}day^{-1}$ under 85% RH, and $4.07{\times}10^{-2}day^{-1}$ under UV radiation, respectively. The rates of dissolution of OMZ-CHL bulk and OMZ-CHL tablet were 100% and more than 85% in 15 minutes, respectively, which were increased than OMZ base and OMZ-tablet. In the acute toxicological test, the value of oral $LD_{50}$(mouse) was 4.608 g/kg. OMZ-CHL was pelletized using lactose, polyethyle neglycol(PEG), D-sorbitol, Avicel PH 101, sodium laurylsulfate and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) K-30, and enteric coated with HPMCP, Myvacet, acetone, ethanol and cetanol, of which dissolution rate was found to be more than 85% in 10 minutes. From the above results, it was found that OMZ-CHL is a useful means for development of new oral dosage forms of OMZ.

간호진단과 중재분류에 관한 조사연구 -가정 간호 대상자를 중심으로- (A Study on Nursing Diagnoses and Nursing Intervention Classification -focused on Home Health Care Clients-)

  • The purpose of this study was to classify, from collected home health care records data, nursing diagnoses according to the NANDA system and nursing interventions according to the NIC system, and to link nursing interventions to nursing diagnoses. For this study, 101 home health care records of clients seen between September, 1994 and November, 1996 at Yonsei Medical Center, Seoul, were analyzed. The results of this study are summarized as follows : 1. The most frequent nursing diagnoses were ‘Risk for infection’ and ‘Altered nutrition : Less than body requirements’, then ‘Impaired skin intergrity’ and ‘Ineffective airway clearance’ in the Exchange pattern of NANDA nine human response patterns. 2. The most frequent nursing interventions were the interventions in the Physiological : Complex domain, there were 690(50.7%) interventions among a total 1347 interventions. This results corresponds to Yom, Young Hee(1995)’s research, both Korean and U.S. nurses used the interventions in the Physiological : Complex do main most often on a daily basis. And respiratory nursing interventions were most frequent because 32.7% of the subjects were respiratory patients. 3. The next step was to link the nursing interventions to nursing diagnoses. The most frequent nursing diagnosis was ‘Risk for infection’ and 19 interventions for ‘Risk for infection’ were used 267 times. Then 14 interventions for ‘Impaired skin integrity’ were used 258 times, 12 interventions for ‘Ineffrective airway clearance’ were used 193 times, 12 interventions for ‘Altered nutrition : Less than body requirements’ were used 122 times, 10 interventions for ‘Activity intolerance’ were used 75 times, and 11 interventions for ‘Knowledge deficit’ were used 52 times. 4. The use of standardized classification in the areas of nursing diagnoses and nursing interventions facilitates clinical decision making and prompt nursing activity, and so enhances the effectiveness of nursing care.

술폰화 폴리스틸렌/폴리비닐리덴플로라이드 복합막의 제조 및 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Preparation and Characterization of Sulfonated PS/PVdF Composite Membranes)

  • 다공성 비대칭막인 polinylidene fluoride (PVdF) 기질막을 상전환법으로 제작하였다. Styrene과 divinyl-benzene (DVB)의 비율을 달리하여 가교시킨 후 술폰산 용액인 황산을 사용하여 $SO_3{^-}$기를 도입시켜 최종적으로 PVdF 이온전도성 복합막을 제작한 후 FTIR, SEM, EDS로써 $SO_3{^-}$기를 확인하였다. 가교도가 증가할수록 용매의 함유율이 감소하였으며, 이온교환용량도 감소하였다. 또한 전기전도도 및 메탄올 투과도도 가교도의 증가에 따라 감소하였으나 Nafion 117보다 우수한 값을 나타내었다. DVB 함량이 8%일 때 $5.58{\times}10^{-5}S/cm$의 전기전도도로써 Nafion 117과 유사한 전기 전도도($6.03{\times}10^{-5}S/cm$)를 나타내었으나 Nafion 117보다 낮은 메탄올투과도($1.0{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/sec$)를 보여 주었다.

방사선취급 병원근무자들의 염색체이상 및 자매염색분체교환 빈도 (Chromosome Aberrations and Sister Chromatid Exchanges of Hospital Workers Exposed to Radiation)

  • In order to evaluate the cytogenetic hazard among hospital workers potentially exposed to low dose of radiation, the analysis of chromosome aberrations(CA) and sister chromatid exchanges(SCE) in lymphocytes were performed in 79 hospital workers and 79 non-exposed workers. The mean frequency of chromosomal exchange and deletion(respectively, $0.20\times10^{-2}/cell\;and\;0.39\times10^{-2}/cell$) in the exposed group were significantly higher than those$(0.07\times10^{-2}/cell\;and\;0.23\times10^{-2}/cell)$ in control group. The frequency of sister chromatid exchanges was 5.04/cell in the control vs. 6.57/cell in the exposed group. There were also significant differences in the mean frequencies of CA and SCE adjusted for age, sex, smoking, drinking between two groups. There were no evidence of significant increase of CA and SCE according to the department or duration of employment. But the frequency of cells having chromosome aberration was significantly higher in the exposed group than in the control group related to duration of employment. There was no dose-effect relationship between the cumulative doses and the frequency of CA and SCE. But in the case of last 1 yr cumulative dose, there were evidence of significant dose-dependant increase of chromosome type CA and percentage of cells with aberration. The result suggest that there is cytogenetic hazard in risk group like hospital workers handling low dose radiation. And the analysis CA and SCE are useful biological indicators for the exposure of low dose level of radiation.

리파아제에 의한 나프록센 2,2,2-트리플로로에틸 씨오에스터의 Dynamic Kinetic Resolution을 위한 라세미화 촉매로서의 고체 염기 (Solid Bases as Racemization Catalyst for Lipase-catalyzed Dynamic Kinetic Resolution of Naproxen 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl Thioester)

  • 2-아릴프로피온산 계열의 키랄 의약품의 효소적 dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) 공정에서 라세미화 염기촉매로 트리 옥틸아민이 지금까지 주로 사용되어 왔으나 반응매질에 녹은 상태로 작용해 회수 및 재사용이 어려웠다. 본 연구에서는 이를 개선하고자 라세미화 반응을 위한 고효율 고체 염기를 탐색해 보았다. 45$^{\circ}C$, 아이소옥탄 내에서 (S)-나프록센 2,2,2-트리플로로에틸 씨오에스터를 기질로 무기 염기류, 염기성음이온교환수지류, resin-bound 염기류 등을 시험한 결과, 약염기성 음이온교환수지인 DIAION WA30을 사용하였을 때 가장 효과적이었다. DIAION WA30의 2차 interconversion constant ( $k_{int}$$^*/)는 8.6${\times}$$10^{-4}$ m $M^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$이며 동일한 실험조건하에서 수행한 트리옥틸아민 ( $k_{int}$$^*/ = 2.5${\times}$$10^{-4}$ m $M^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$)에 비해 약 3배가 높았다. 효소 활성에 필수적인 물의 양에 따른 DIAION WA30의 라세미화 효율에 관하여 실험한 결과, 물의 양이 증가할수록 그 효율은 감소하였다. DIAION WA30을 라세미화 촉매로 사용하여 아이소옥탄 내에서 라세믹 나프록센 2,2,2-트리플로로에틸 씨오에스터의 효소적 DKR 반응을 수행해 보았다. 그 결과 DIAION WA30을 사용하지 않은 경우에 비해 반응 전환율과 생성물의 광학 순도는 급격히 향상되었다. 전통적 광학분할 반응의 최대 50%라는 전환율의 제한이 본 연구에서 찾은 DIAION WA30을 첨가함으로써 성공적으로 극복되었다. 또한 고체 염기촉매인 DIAION WA30의 사용은 라세미화 촉매의 회수 및 재사용이 가능하게 해준다.다.다.다.다.다.

Characterization of Polyester Cloth as an Alternative Separator to Nafion Membrane in Microbial Fuel Cells for Bioelectricity Generation Using Swine Wastewater

  • Polyester cloth (PC) was selected as a prospective inexpensive substitute separator material for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). PC was compared with a traditional Nafion proton exchange membrane (PEM) as an MFC separator by analyzing its physical and electrochemical properties. A single layer of PC showed higher mass transfer (e.g., for $O_2/H^+/ions$) than the Nafion PEM; in the case of oxygen mass transfer coefficient ($k_o$), a rate of $50.0{\times}10^{-5} cm{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was observed compared with a rate of $20.8{\times}10^{-5}cm/s$ in the Nafion PEM. Increased numbers of PC layers were found to reduce the oxygen mass transfer coefficient. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen ($D_O$) for PC ($2.0-3.3{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/s$) was lower than that of the Nafion PEM ($3.8{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/s$). The PC was found to have a low ohmic resistance ($0.29-0.38{\Omega}$) in the MFC, which was similar to that of Nafion PEM ($0.31{\Omega}$); this resulted in comparable maximum power density and maximum current density in MFCs with PC and those with Nafion PEMs. Moreover, a higher average current generation was observed in MFCs with PC ($104.3{\pm}15.3A/m^3$) compared with MFCs with Nafion PEM ($100.4{\pm}17.7A/m^3$), as well as showing insignificant degradation of the PC surface, during 177 days of use in swine wastewater. These results suggest that PC separators could serve as a low-cost alternative to Nafion PEMs for construction of cost-effective MFCs.
