Weathered soil is one of the most representative soils in Korea. In this study, a series of cyclic triaxial tests was carried out to predict the post-cyclic deformation behavior of weathered soils in case of non-liquefaction. Excess pore pressure response during cyclic loading and volumetric strain during the dissipation of excess pore pressure were measured varying the confining pressure, relative density and cyclic stress ratio. Based on the test results, it Is found that the modified excess pore pressure ratio, excess pore pressure ratio normalized by cyclic stress ratio, is uniquely correlated with the number of cycles irrespective of confining pressure and cyclic stress ratio. Using the newly proposed MEPPR(modified excess pore pressure ratio) concept, it is possible to easily evaluate the excess pore pressure and the settlement of weathered soils due to cyclic loading by greatly reduced number of tests. It is also verified that the reconsolidation volumetric strain is independent of the way how the excess pore pressure was generated.
In this paper, a total stress analysis method for gravity quay walls is suggested. The method can evaluate the displacement of the quay walls considering the effect of excess pore pressure developed in backfill soils. This method changes the stiffness of backfill soils according to the expected magnitude of the excess pore pressure. For practical application, evaluation methods are suggested for determining the excess pore pressure ratio developed in the backfill soils and the backfill stiffness that corresponds to the excess pore pressure ratio. This method is important in practical applications because the displacement of the quay walls can be evaluated by using only the basic input properties in the total stress analysis. The applicability of the suggested method was verified by comparing the results of the analysis with the results of 1-g shaking table tests. From the comparison, it was found that the calculated displacements from the suggested method showed good agreement with the measured displacements of the quay walls. It was also found that the excess pore pressure in backfill soils is a governing influence on the dynamic behavior of quay walls.
In this research, shaking table tests for three types of gravity quay wall system were performed to analyze the influence of excess pore pressure in backfill soils on the natural frequency of gravity quay wall systems. The elastic modulus of backfill soils was also estimated from the back analyses using the results of the shaking table tests. From the test results, it was observed that as the magnitude of excess pore pressures increased, the natural frequency of the gravity quay wall system decreased and vice versa. The natural frequency was about 44Hz when no excess pore pressure was generated in backfill soils, and decreased to about 16Hz at the pore pressure ratio of 0.55. The elastic modulus of backfill soils reached the constant maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was less than 0.2, and abruptly decreased as the pore pressure ratio became larger than that. The elastic modulus of backfill soils decreased to $10\%$ of the maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was 0.55.

This study was carried out to comparison of coefficient of consolidation and the prediction of excess pore water pressure in agricultural reservoir on soft clay ground. For the purpose of verification of the proposed equation, laboratory model tests and field tests were performed and excess pore water pressure was compared to those predicted with the Terzaghi's method. The predicted excess pore water pressure according to ponding was very applicable to practice because it was close to the observed data. Also, for the comparison of coefficient of consolidation, the oedometer, constant rate of strain (CRS), and Rowe cell tests were performed. The coefficient of consolidation at the Rowe cell and CRS tests showed a greate increase than in the oedometer test. The ratio of the vertical and horizontal coefficient of consolidation showed a large difference according to various tests method and mixing ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that careful attention should be paid to predicting the required consolidation period in agricultural reservoir.

The purpose of this study is to establish a proper criterion for the constant rate of loading consolidation(CRLC) test which is a kind of the continuous loading consolidation(CLC) and widely used as alternative methods to the incremental loading consolidation(ILC)test. With those results, the preconsolidation pressure estimated by the CRLC test turned out to be comparatively larger than that of the ILC test, and it is increased in proportion to the applied loading rates. However, the compression index in the CRLC test is less influenced on by the loading rates. The coefficient of consolidation and permeability in the CRLC test are dependent on excess pore pressure ratio mainly. In other words, if the pore pressure ratios are too low, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become smaller than those of the ILC test. On the other hand, if the excess pore pressure ratios are too high, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become so larger than those of the ILC test. Therefore, loading rates should be carefully determined to generate proper excess pore pressure ratio inside the soil specimen. From this study, good results are obtained from the CRLC test if the excess pore pressure ratios were in the range of 2.5 to 6.0 %, performed with loading rates between 0.0015 and 0.005 $kgf/cm^2/min$.
Uplift phenomenon occurs when the apparent unit weight of buried geo-structures becomes smaller than that of the liquefied backfill due to the increase of an excess pore water pressure during strong earthquakes. In order to explain the relationship between the uplift displacement of the buried geo-structures and the increase of the excess pore water pressure ratio in backfill, dynamic centrifuge model tests are conducted. In the present study, primary and secondary factors against uplift behavior of the buried geo-structures are considered in the dynamic centrifuge model tests. Among these factors, the most important factors affecting the increase in the excess pore water pressure ratio were the ground water depth, the relative density of backfill, and the amplitude of the input acceleration, which were also largely affect the uplift amount of the buried geo-structures.
This paper describes a proper criterion for the constant rate of loading consolidation (CRLC) test which is a kind of the continuous loading consolidation(CRLS) and widely used as alternative methods to the incremental loading consolidation(ILC)test. With those results, the preconsolidation pressure estimated by the CRLC test turned out to be comparatively larger than that of the ILC test and it is increased in proportion to the applied loading rates. However, the compression index in the CRLC test is less ifluenced on by the loading rates. The coeffcient of consolidation and permeability in the CRLC test are dependent on excess pore pressure ratio mainly. In other words, if the pore pressure ratios are too low, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become smaller than those of the ILC test. On the other hand, if the excess pore pressure ratios are too high, the coefficient of consolidation and permeability become so larger than those of the ILC test. Therefore loading rates should be carefully determined to generate proper excess pore pressure ratio.
This paper deals with development and dissipation of excess pore pressure induced by the cyclic load. Cyclic triaxial tests on reconstituted samples of weathered residual soils, which were widely used as construction materials in Korea, were performed. Test results showed that excess pore pressures developed under undrained condition increased with the increase of cyclic loads and confining pressures. And a new concept based on modified excess pore pressure ratio (MEPPR) was proposed for simply estimating excess pore pressures in terms of the number of cyclic load, irrespective of cyclic loads and confining pressures. Also, it was proposed that excess pore pressure ratio (EPPR) could be effectively utilized to estimate volumetric strains during dissipation which decreased as confining pressures increased. Consequently, concept and method to effectively estimate settlements under non-liquefied condition, induced by dynamic loads such as earthquake loads were evaluated based on laboratory test results for reconstituted weathered residual soils.

Understanding the behavior of soil under cyclic loading conditions is essential for assessing its response to seismic events and potential liquefaction. This study investigates the effect of non-plastic fines content (FC) on excess pore pressure generation in medium-density sand-silt mixtures subjected to strain-controlled cyclic direct simple shear (CDSS) tests. The investigation is conducted by analyzing excess pore pressure (EPP) ratios and the number of cycles to liquefaction (Ncyc-liq) under varying shear strain levels and FC values. The study uses Jumunjin sand and silica silt with FC values ranging from 0% to 40% and shear strain levels of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1.0%. The findings indicate that the EPP ratio increases rapidly during loading cycles, with higher shear strain levels generating more EPP and requiring fewer cycles to reach liquefaction. At 1.0% and 0.5% shear strain levels, FC has a limited effect on Ncyc-liq. However, at a lower shear strain level of 0.2%, increasing FC from 0 to 10% reduces Ncyc-liq from 42 to 27, and as FC increases further, Ncyc-liq also increases. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the behavior of soil under cyclic loading conditions. It highlights the significance of shear strain levels and FC values in excess pore pressure generation and liquefaction susceptibility.

In this study, cyclic triaxial tests were performed with the samples which were anisotropically consolidated using irregular earthquake loading to consider in-situ condition and seismic wave. The consolidation pressure ratio(K) was changed from 0.5 to 1.0. The Ofunato and Hachinohe wave are applied as irregular earthquake loading and liquefaction resistance strength was estimated from excess pore water pressure(EPWP) ratio. As results of the cyclic triaxial tests, buildup of EPWP ratio increased as K value increased. It shows, that the isotropically consolidated sands is more susceptible to liquefaction than anisotropically consolidated sands under equal conditions such as confining pressure and dynamic loading.
