  • South Korea experiences few large scale erosion and sedimentation problems, however, there are numerous local sedimentation problems. A reliable and consistent approach to modelling and management for sediment processes are desirable in the country. In this study, field measurements of sediment concentration from 34 alluvial river basins in South Korea were used with the Modified Einstein Procedure (MEP) to determine the total sediment load at the sampling locations. And then the Flow Duration-Sediment Rating Curve (FD-SRC) method was used to estimate the specific degradation for all gauging stations. The specific degradation of most rivers were found to be typically 50-300 tons/㎢·yr. A model tree data mining technique was applied to develop a model for the specific degradation based on various watershed characteristics of each watershed from GIS analysis. The meaningful parameters are: 1) elevation at the middle relative area of the hypsometric curve [m], 2) percentage of wetland and water [%], 3) percentage of urbanized area [%], and 4) Main stream length [km]. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of existing models is in excess of 1,250 tons/㎢·yr and the RMSE of the proposed model with 6 additional validations decreased to 65 tons/㎢·yr. Erosion loss maps from the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), satellite images, and aerial photographs were used to delineate the geospatial features affecting erosion and sedimentation. The results of the geospatial analysis clearly shows that the high risk erosion area (hill slopes and construction sites at urbanized area) and sedimentation features (wetlands and agricultural reservoirs). The result of physiographical analysis also indicates that the watershed morphometric characteristic well explain the sediment transport. Sustainable management with the data mining methodologies and geospatial analysis could be helpful to solve various erosion and sedimentation problems under different conditions.

  • This paper presents the design and fabrication of the diplexer for a KOREASAT-III Ka-band satellite transponder. The transmission characteristics of the diplexer is analyzed by calculating the generalized scattering matrix using mode matching method. It is composed of 2 bandpass filters, coupled with H-plane T-junction having symmetrical inductive iris and E-plane metal insert structures. Compared with the size and weight of the Rx and Tx filter loaded with a transponders respectively, those of the diplexer can be effectively reduced. In a high power transmission, the variation of the filter characteristics is minimized by the scheme that irises are extended to the exterior of H-plane of the waveguide. This scheme needs no extra heat sinks for dissipating high power. The diplexer is designed to improve the simplification, durability and reliability by eliminating tuning screws, which have been used to compensate for the characteristics of fabricated filters. The bandpass filters of the diplexer show the insertion loss of less than 1.2 dB and the return loss in excess of 15 dB. The isolations of more than 65 dB have been achieved between Rx and Tx filter.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term survival rate and peri-implant marginal bone loss related to multiple risk factors including the clinician's experience. Materials and Methods: Four hundred twenty implants in 146 patients, who had involved a supportive periodontal therapy program every 3 to 6 months and had follow up data for at least 5 years, were selected as the study group. Peri-implant marginal bone loss, data of demographic, implant and surgical characteristics were collected from peri-apical radiographs and chart review. Implant survival was regarded as the remaining with radiographic marginal bone level in excess of 50% of the fixture length for any reason. Results: The cumulative survival rate after 5 years of loading was 94.9%. In binary logistic regression analysis, smoking status (P = 0.033) and presence of spontaneous cover screw exposure (P < 0.001) were significantly related to 5-year survival of implants. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, smoking status (P < 0.001), type of abutment connection (P < 0.001) and implant surface (P = 0.033) were significantly related to peri-implant marginal bone level. And the year of resident was not statistically related to 5-year implant survival in simple logistic regression analysis (P = 0.171). Conclusion: Smoking status, spontaneous cover screw exposure, type of abutment connection and implant surface might influence the implant success. There was no significant correlation between the year of resident and implant failure.

  • The prediction of detection range of a passive sonar system is essential to estimate the performance and to optimize the operation of a developed sonar system. In this paper, a model for the prediction of detection range in a range-dependent ocean environment based on the sonar equation is developed and tested. The prediction model calculates the transmission loss using PE propagation model, signal excess, and the detection probability at each target depth and range. The detection probability is integrated to give the estimated detection range. In order to validate the developed model, two cases are considered. One is the case when target depth is known. The other is the case when the target depth is unknown. The computational results agree well with the previously published results for the range-independent environment. Also, the developed model is applied to the range-dependent ocean environment where the warm eddy exists. The computational results are shown and discussed. The developed model can be used to find the optimal frequency of detection, as well as the optimal search depth for the given range-dependent ocean environment.

  • In this study, $Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3$(x=0.65, 0.52, 0.35) thin films were fabricated by Sol-Gel method. A stock solution with excess Pb 10[mol.%] of $Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3$ was made and spin-coated on the Pt/$SiO_2$/Si substrate at 4000[rpm] for 30[sec.]. Coated specimens were dried on the hot-plate at $400[^{\circ}C]$ for 10[min.]. Sintering temperature and time were $500{\sim}800[^{\circ}C]$ and $1{\sim}60$[min.]. To investigate crystallization condition, PZT thin films were analyzed with sintering temperature, time and composition by the XRD. The microstructure of thin films were investigated by SEM. The ferroelectric perovskite phases precipitated under the sintering of $700[^{\circ}C]$ for 1 hour. In the PZT(52/48) composition, dielectric constant and dielectric loss were 2133, 2.2[%] at room temperature, respectively.

  • Half-rail stacked drivers are used to reduce power consumption of the drivers for synchronous buck converters. In this paper, the stacked driver is optimized by matching the average charging and discharging currents used by high-side and low-side drivers. By matching the two currents, the average intermediate bias voltage can remain constant without the aid of the voltage regulator as long as the voltage ripple stays within the window defined by the hysteresis of the regulator. Thus the optimized driver in this paper can minimize the power consumption in the regulator. The current matching requirement yields the value for the intermediate bias voltage, which deviates from the half-rail voltage. Furthermore the required capacitance is also reduced in this design due to decreased charging current, which results in significantly reduced die area. The detailed analysis and design of the stacked driver is verified through simulations done using 5V MOSFET parameters of a typical 0.35-${\mu}m$ CMOS process. The difference in power loss between the conventional half-rail driver and the proposed driver is less than 1%. But the conventional half-rail driver has excess charge stored in the capacitor, which will be dissipated in the regulator unless reused by an external circuit. Due to the reduction in the required capacitance, the estimated saving in chip area is approximately 18.5% compared to the half-rail driver.

  • Fructose in the form of sucrose and high fructose corn syrup is absorbed by the intestinal transporter and mainly metabolized in the small intestine. However, excess intake of fructose overwhelms the absorptive capacity of the small intestine, leading to fructose malabsorption. Carbohydrate response element-binding protein (ChREBP) is a basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper transcription factor that plays a key role in glycolytic and lipogenic gene expression in response to carbohydrate consumption. While ChREBP was initially identified as a glucose-responsive factor in the liver, recent evidence suggests that ChREBP is essential for fructose-induced lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis in the small intestine as well as in the liver. We recently identified that the loss of ChREBP leads to fructose intolerance via insufficient induction of genes involved in fructose transport and metabolism in the intestine. As fructose consumption is increasing and closely associated with metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases, a comprehensive understanding of cellular fructose sensing and metabolism via ChREBP may uncover new therapeutic opportunities. In this mini review, we briefly summarize recent progress in intestinal fructose metabolism, regulation and function of ChREBP by fructose, and delineate the potential mechanisms by which excessive fructose consumption may lead to irritable bowel syndrome.

  • Purpose: The purpose is to present an useful and simple surgical method to improve the aging of upper third face in patients with high frontal hairline as well as low frontal hairline. Methods: Forty eight female patients were treated with subcutaneous forehead lift using an anterior hairline incision over 14 years. This surgical technique is performed under direct vision utilizing a beveled incision made 4 to 5 mm into the anterior hairline with subcutaneous dissection, which is continued near to eyebrow, sometimes extended to supraorbital rim to remove corrugator and procerus muscles. In patients with high frontal hairline, excess forehead skin anterior to incision line is removed. On the contrary in the patients with low frontal hairline, scalp posterior to incision line is removed. Results: This technique provided constant and good results with the forty six patients, who were satisfied with eyebrow elevation and removal of wrinkles in forehead and glabellar region. However two patients were undercorrected, and focal alopecia developed in another two patients. One patient complained of pruritus over one year, but subsided spontaneously without any treatment. Temporary paresthesia developed in the forehead and frontal scalp of all cases after operation but permanent sensory loss never occurred in all the patients. Conclusion: Subcutaneous forehead lift using an anterior hairline incision is suggested to be one of the effective surgical methods to improve the aging of upper third face in the patients with high frontal hairline as well as low frontal hairline.
