The study on the lateral earth pressure is briskly preformed for various conditions such as type of retaining walls, ground condition, and type of supporting systems. It is not simple to determine the distribution of lateral earth pressure accurately, however, because the lateral earth pressure is affected by various factors. This study is performed to analyze the behavior of earth retaining walls for new excavation contacting with existing excavation by comparing with the site measuring values before and after new excavation. On the base of observation, the distribution of strut axial forces is similar to that of ganeral earth retaining walls, but strut axial forces is increased by removal of existing earth anchors. When new excavation is performed contacting with existing excavation, the axial force of strut is decreased because of soil exclusion in the behind walls, but that force is increased after new exeavation. The analysis result show that the installation of strut in middle part makes a effect to not only 1 adjacent strut, but 3-5 adjacent struts. Also during new excavation strut axial forces is decreased by relaxation of total earth retaining wall system.
Deep excavation increases utility of underground spaces for high buildings. subways etc. To excavate vertically the underground, safe earth retaining walls and supporting systems should be prepared. Recently anchors have been used to support the excavation wall. The anchored excavation has some advantages toprovide working space for underground construction. In this paper the prestressed anchor loads were measured by load cells which attacted to the anchors to support the excavation walls at eight construction fields. where under-ground deep excavation was performed on cohesionless soils. The lateral pressures on the retaining walls, which are estimated from the measured anchor forces, shows a trapezoidal distribution that the pressure increases linearly with depth from the ground surface to 30% of the excavation depth and then keeps constant value regardless of the stiffness of the walls. The maximum lateral pressure was same to 63% of the Ranking active earth pressure or 17% of the vertical overburden pressure at the final depth The investigation of the measured lateral pressure on the anchored excavation walls shows that empirical earth pressure diagram presented by Terzaghi-Peck and Tschebotarioff could be applied with some modifications to determine anchor loads for the anchored excavation in cohesionless soils.

The earth retaining walls using stabilizing piles can be applied to shallow excavation works without any stiffener. But, It demends a variety of installed composite stiffener on the earth retaining walls when it is installed as deep excavation works. Because, it causes an excessive displacement of walls. This research tried to overcome the problems created by the above issues and intended to apply the composite stiffener. The model test, focused on the effect of installed composite stiffener, measured the bending stress with stabilizing piles and walls, the settlement of earth surface, the displacement of walls for a step excavation and an increase in strip load. With the test results and soil deformation analysis, the reinforcement effect(relating to control displacement and earth presure) was analyzed in a qualitative and quantitative manner. It is expected to overcome a deep excavation works.
Recently, in order to utilize more effectively underground space, deep excavations have been performed on building or subway construction in urban areas. In such excavations, anchors have been used to support the excavation retaining walls because the anchored excavation could provide wide working space for underground construction. The purpose of this paper is to establish empirical equations to be able to estimate the earth pressures acting on anchored excavation retention walls, based on the investigation of field measuring results, which were obtained from twenty seven building construction sites. The prestressed anchor force was measured by load cells which were attached to the anchor head, while the horizontal displacement of excavation walls were measured by inclinometers which were installed right'behind the retention walls. The lateral earth pressures acting on the anchored retention walls, which were estimated from both the measured anchor forces and the horizontal displacement of the walls, showed a trapezoidal distribution. There was some difference between the measured earth pressures acting on the anchored retention walls and the empirical earth pressures given by several empirical equations. Thus, the lateral earth pressures acting on anchored retention walls would be estimated by these empirical equations with some modifications.

The design and construction of strutted and anchored sheet pile walls in soft clay are reviewed based on experience gained mainly in Singapore during the last 10years where mainly strutted sheet pile walls diaphragm walls, and contiguous bored piles are used. It is important to consider in the design the high lateral earth pressures acting on the sheet piles below the bottom of the excavation when the depth of the excavation is large compared with the shear strength of the clay. The strut loads and the maximum bending moment in the sheet piles can in that case be much higher than indicated by a conventional analysis. Different methods to increase the stability have been investigated. With jet grouting, embankment piles and excavation under water it is possible to reduce significantly the maximum bending moment, the strut loads, and the settlements outside the excavated area as well as the heave within the excavation.
Cantilever sheet pile walls having section thinner than masonry walls are generally adopted to retain moderate height of excavation. In practice, a surcharge in the form of strip load of finite width is generally present on the backfill. So, in the present study, influence of strip load on cantilever sheet pile walls is analyzed by varying the width of the strip load and distance from the cantilever sheet pile walls using finite difference based computer program in cohesionless soil modelled as Mohr-Coulomb model. The results of bending moment, earth pressure, deflection and settlement are presented in non-dimensional terms. A parametric study has been conducted for different friction angle of soil, embedded depth of sheet pile walls, different magnitudes and width of the strip load acting on the ground surface and at a depth below ground level. The result of present study is also validated with the available literature. From the results presented in this study, it can be inferred that optimum behavior of cantilever sheet pile walls is observed for strip load having width 2 m to 3 m on the ground surface. Further as the depth of strip load below the ground surface increases below the ground level to 0.75 times excavation height, the bending moment, settlement, net earth pressure and deflection decreases and then remains constant.

Based on the field measuring data obtained from excavation sections in Inchon International Airport project, the relationships between the horizontal displacement of sheet-pile walls and the deformations of soft ground around the excavation were investigated. The horizontal displacements of walls according to supporting method are largely occurred in order of anchors, anchors with struts, and struts. The depths of maximum horizontal displacement are varied with supporting systems. If the stability number shows lower than ${\pi}$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity of maximum horizontal displacement are respectively developed less than 1% of excavation depth and 1mm/day. When the stability number shows lower than ${\pi}+2$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are respectively developed less than 2.5% of excavation depth and 2mm/day. Also, when the stability number shows more than ${\pi}+2$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are rapidly increased.

This study aims to present a more reasonable control value than the exiting one by comparing and analyzing control values and field instrument8tion values of the whole excavation depth of the four case sites, using geometric averaging as a statistical method. The range of the study is confined to the horizontal displacement of braced excavation walls among a variety of items, prescribed in the control values by approximately of the allowable and design values, and by safety factors. As a result, it is desirable to revise 70, 90, and 100 percent of LEVEL I, II, and III, respectively. The horizontal displacement values of the allowable and design values approximations should change to 104, 133, and 148 percent of the allowable and design values, respectively. In addition, modifying the horizontal displacement control value of the braced excavation walls is not needed. The horizontal displacement value, presented in the control value as a safety factor, is now 1.19, as it has a slight difference from the present value.

Mass movement of anchored walls is defined and its characteristics were discussed. A beam on elasto-plastic foundation modeling of soldier pile and woodlagging tieback walls or anchored walls was developed and used in practice. However, the behavior of an anchored wall can not be predicted well, if the locations of anchor bonded zone are near the wall. Mass movement is defined as the movement of anchor bonded zone due to the excavation without the change in the anchor load. Case histories of anchored walls were analyzed and the normalized mass movement chart were developed. This mass movement chart can provide the idea how to locate anchors to minimize the deflection of the wall. The further the anchor bonded zone is located from the wall, the less the movement of the wall due to excavation occurs.
Lateral earth pressure and horizontal displacement of the diaphragm walls constructed in multi-soil layers were analyzed by the field instrumentation from six building construction sites in urban area. The distribution of the developed earth pressure of the anchored diaphragm walls during excavation shows approximately a trapezoid diagram. The maximum earth pressure of anchored diaphragm walls corresponds to $0.45{\gamma}H$ and the earth pressure acts at the upper part of the walls. The maximum earth pressure is two times larger than the empirical earth pressure of flexible walls in sands suggested by Terzaghi and Peck(1967), Tschebotarioff(1973), and Hong and Yun(1995a). The horizontal displacement of diaphragm walls is closely related with supporting systems such as struts, anchors, and so on. The horizontal displacement of anchored walls shows less than 0.1 percent of the excavated depth, and the horizontal displacement of strutted walls shows less than 0.25 percent of the excavated depth. Therefore, the restraining effect of horizontal displacement to the anchored diaphragm walls is larger than the strutted diaphragm walls. In addition, since the horizontal displacement of the diaphragm walls is lower than the criterion, $\delta=0.25%H$, used for control the anchored retention wall using soilder piles, the safety of excavation sites applied with the diaphragm walls is pretty excellent.
