  • In this paper, we introduce a new evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm based on the non-domination direction information, which can be an alternative among several multiobjective evolutionary algorithms. The new evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm proposed in this paper will not use the conventional recombination or mutation operators but use the non-domination directions, which are extracted from the non-domination relation among the population. And the problems of the modified sharing algorithms are pointed out and a new sharing algorithm sill be proposed to overcome those problems.

  • Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA) proposed by J. H. Holland is a population-based optimization method based on the principle of the Darwinian natural selection. The theoretical foundations of GA are the Schema Theorem and the Building Block Hypothesis. Although GA does well in many applications as an optimization method, still it does not guarantee the convergence to a global optimum in GA-hard problems and deceptive problems. Therefore as an alternative scheme, there is a growing interest in a co-evolutionary system, where two populations constantly interact and co-evolve. In this paper we propose an extended schema theorem associated with a schema co-evolutionary algorithm(SCEA), which explains why the co-evolutionary algorithm works better than SGA. The experimental results show that the SCEA works well in optimization problems including deceptive functions.

  • This paper presents an optimization method for optimal reactive power dispatch which minimizes real power loss and improves voltage profile of power systems using evolutionary computation such as genetic algorithms(GAs), evolutionary programming(EP). and evolution strategy(ES). Many conventional methods to this problem have been proposed in the past, but most these approaches have the common defect of being caught to a local minimum solution. Recently, global search methods such as GAs, EP, and ES are introduced. The proposed methods were applied to the IEEE 30-bus system. Each simulation result, compared with that obtained by using a conventional gradient-based optimization method, Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), shows the possibility of applications of evolutionary computation to large scale power systems.

  • It is a classical integer optimization difficulty to design an optimal selection scheme in cooperative relay networks considering co-channel interference (CCI). In this paper, we solve single-objective and multi-objective relay selection problem. For the single-objective relay selection problem, in order to attain optimal system performance of cooperative relay network, a novel quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (QDEA) is proposed to resolve the optimization difficulty of optimal relay selection, and the proposed optimal relay selection scheme is called as optimal relay selection based on quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (QDEA). The proposed QDEA combines the advantages of quantum computing theory and differential evolutionary algorithm (DEA) to improve exploring and exploiting potency of DEA. So QDEA has the capability to find the optimal relay selection scheme in cooperative relay networks. For the multi-objective relay selection problem, we propose a novel non-dominated sorting quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (NSQDEA) to solve the relay selection problem which considers two objectives. Simulation results indicate that the proposed relay selection scheme based on QDEA is superior to other intelligent relay selection schemes based on differential evolutionary algorithm, artificial bee colony optimization and quantum bee colony optimization in terms of convergence speed and accuracy for the single-objective relay selection problem. Meanwhile, the simulation results also show that the proposed relay selection scheme based on NSQDEA has a good performance on multi-objective relay selection.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show how the Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) algorithm developed by Xie and Steven can be extended to optimal design problems of thin shells subjected to thermal loading. This extension simply incorporates an evolutionary iterative process of thermoelastic thin shell finite element analysis. During the evolution process, lowly stressed material is gradually eliminated from the structure. This paper presents a number of examples to demonstrate the capabilities of the ESO algorithm for solving topology optimization and thickness distribution problems of thermoelastic thin shells.

  • Network optimization is being increasingly important and fundamental issue in the fields such as engineering, computer science, operations research, transportation, telecommunication, decision support systems, manufacturing, and airline scheduling. Networks provide a useful way to modeling real world problems and are extensively used in practice. Many real world applications impose on more complex issues, such as, complex structure, complex constraints, and multiple objects to be handled simultaneously and make the problem intractable to the traditional approaches. Recent advances in evolutionary computation have made it possible to solve such practical network optimization problems. The invited talk introduces a thorough treatment of evolutionary approaches, i.e., hybrid genetic algorithms approach to network optimization problems, such as, fixed charge transportation problem, minimum cost and maximum flow problem, minimum spanning tree problem, multiple project scheduling problems, scheduling problem in FMS.

  • In order to be able to predict the maximum Annual Energy Production (AEP) for tidal power plants, an AEP optimization tool based on Evolutionary Algorithms was developed by ANDRITZ HYDRO. This tool can simulate all operating modes of the units (bi-directional turbine, pump and sluicing mode) and provide the optimal plant operation that maximizes the AEP to the control system. For the Swansea Bay Tidal Power Plant, the AEP optimization evaluated all different hydraulic and operating concepts and defined the optimal concept that led to a significant AEP increase. A comparison between the optimal plant operation provided by the AEP optimization and the full load operating strategy is presented in the paper, highlighting the advantage of the method in providing the maximum AEP.

  • This paper focuses on three very similar evolutionary algorithms: genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and differential evolution (DE). While GA is more suitable for discrete optimization, PSO and DE are more natural for continuous optimization. The paper first gives a brief introduction to the three EA techniques to highlight the common computational procedures. The general observations on the similarities and differences among the three algorithms based on computational steps are discussed, contrasting the basic performances of algorithms. Summary of relevant literatures is given on job shop, flexible job shop, vehicle routing, location-allocation, and multimode resource constrained project scheduling problems.
