Recently, several promising multiobjective evolutionary algorithms, e,g, SPEA, NSGA-ll, PESA, and SPEA2, have been developed. In this paper, we also propose a new multiobjective evolutionary algorithm that compares to them. In the algorithm proposed in this paper, we introduce a novel concept, "inherited age" and total algorithm is executed based on the inherited age concept. Also, we propose a new sharing algorithm, called objective classication sharing algorithm(OCSA) that can preserve the diversity of the population. We will show the superior performance of the proposed algorithm by comparing the proposed algorithm with other promising algorithms for the test functions.
This paper presents a design of artificial neural network power system stabilizer(ANNPSS) using adaptive evolutionary algorithm(AEA). We have proposed an adaptive evolutionary algorithm which uses both a genetic algorithm(GA) and an evolution strategy(ES), useing the merits of two different evolutionary computations. ANNPSS shows better control performances than conventional power system stabilizer(CPSS) in three-phase fault with heavy load which is used when tuning ANNPSS. To show the robustness of the proposed ANNPSS, it is applied to damp the low frequency oscillation caused by disturbances such as three-phase fault with normal and light load. the proposed ANNPSS shows better robustness than CPSS.
Evolutionary operation is useful to improve on-line full-scale manufacturing processes by systematically changing the levels of the process variables while meeting production schedule. Evolutionary operation was developed using two or three process variables for process operators who are not good at statistics. Recently, when a product is developed, it is very important for the engineers to make the production line stable as soon as possible. And there are many causes which have influences to the product performance. This paper presents an evolutionary operation procedure with many process variables using saturated two level fractional factorial designs including Plackett-Burman design.
In vitro evolution is a powerful technique for the engineering of yeast strains to study cellular mechanisms associated with evolutionary adaptation; strains with desirable traits for industrial processes can also be generated. There are two distinct approaches to generate evolved strains in vitro: the sequential transfer of cells in the stationary phase into fresh medium or the continuous growth of cells in a chemostat bioreactor via the constant supply of fresh medium. In culture, evolutionary forces drive diverse adaptive mechanisms within the cell to overcome environmental or intracellular stressors. Especially, this engineering strategy has expanded to the field of human cell lines; the understanding of such adaptive mechanisms provides promising targets for the treatment of human genetic diseases and cancer. Therefore, this technology has the potential to generate numerous industrial, medical, and academic applications.
Time and cost-effective production of next-generation sequencing data has enabled the performance of population-scale comparative and evolutionary studies for various species, which are essential for obtaining the comprehensive insight into molecular mechanisms underlying species- or breed-specific traits. In this study, the evolutionary and functional analysis of Korean native pig (KNP) was performed using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data by comparative and population genomic approaches with six different mammalian species and five pig breeds. We examined the evolutionary history of KNP SNPs, and the specific genes of KNP based on the uniqueness of non-synonymous SNPs among the used species and pig breeds. We discovered the evolutionary trajectory of KNP SNPs within the used mammalian species as well as pig breeds. We also found olfaction-associated functions that have been characterized and diversified during evolution, and quantitative trait loci associated with the unique traits of KNP. Our study provides new insight into the evolution of KNP and serves as a good example for a better understanding of domestic animals in terms of evolution and domestication using the combined approaches of comparative and population genomics.
This research aims to demonstrate the optimal geometrical design of splayed multiple cross-sectional pin fin heat sinks (SMCSPFHS), which are a type of side-inlet-side-outlet heat sink (SISOHS). The optimiser strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm2 (SPEA2)is employed to explore a set of Pareto optimalsolutions. Objective functions are the fan pumping power and junction temperature. Function evaluations can be accomplished using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Design variablesinclude pin cross-sectional areas, the number of fins, fin pitch, thickness of heatsink base, inlet air speed, fin heights, and fin orientations with respect to the base. Design constraints are defined in such a way as to make a heat sink usable and easy to manufacture. The optimum results obtained from SPEA2 are compared with the straight pin fin design results obtained from hybrid population-based incremental learning and differential evolution (PBIL-DE), SPEA2, and an unrestricted population size evolutionary multiobjective optimisation algorithm (UPSEMOA). The results indicate that the splayed pin-fin design using SPEA2 issuperiorto those reported in the literature.
This paper proposes an evolutionary model for automatically generating artificial creatures of various shapes and colors according to insect ecology. This model offers a novel way to naturally evolve the shapes and colors of artificial creatures. The evolutionary model used in our research is based on Genetic Algorithms (GA). In this paper, artificial Computer Graphics(CG) creatures develop into various shapes and colors according to the evolutionary model. Later, they can be used as CG animated characters. This model also solves the problem of reducing the time and labor cost for mass production of various characters. It could be used in such areas as the cavalry battle scene in Disney's animation, “Mulan”. Our approach has two steps. At first, artificial creatures move according to information gathered form the five senses. This information is also used for generating the shapes of the five sense organs[1]. Then, based on the GA, evolutionary mode[2], we prepare prototype creatures, which evolve into various shapes and different colors in alternating generations. Finally, our evolutionary model successfully generates various character shapes and colors automatically.

In this paper, an Adaptive Evolutionary Computation(AEC) is proposed. AEC uses a genetic algorithm(GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner is order to take merits of two different evolutionary computations: global search capability of GA and local search capability of ES. In the reproduction procedure, proportions of the population by GA and ES are adaptively modulated according to the fitness. AEC is used to design the membership functions and the scaling factors of fuzzy logic controller (FLC). To evaluate the performances of the proposed FLC, we make an experiment on FLC for the speed control of an actual DC series motor system with nonlinear characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed controller has better performance than that of PD controller.
The optimization of cutouts in composite plates was investigated by implementing a procedure known as Evolutionary Structural Optimization. Perforations were introduced into a finite element mesh of the plate from which one or more cutouts of a predetermined size were evolved. In the examples presented, plates were rejected from around each evolving cutout based on a predefined rejection criterion. The limiting ply within each plate element around the cutout was determined based on the Tsai-Hill failure criterion. Finite element plates with values below the product of the average Tsai-Hill number and a rejection criterion were subsequently removed. This process was iterated until a steady state was reached and the rejection criterion was then incremented by an evolutionary rate and the above steps repeated until the desired cutout area was achieved. Various plates with differing lay-up and loading parameters were investigated to demonstrate the generality and robustness of this optimization procedure.
In this paper, a new methodology of evolutionary computations - An Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm (AEA) is proposed. AEA uses a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner in order to take merits of two different evolutionary computations : global search capability of GA and local search capability of ES. In the reproduction procedure, the proportions of the population by GA and ES are adaptively modulated according to the fitness. AEA is used to. designing fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for a high-angle-of-attack flight system for a super-maneuverable version of F-18 aircraft. AEA is used to determine the membership functions and scaling factors of an FLC. The computer simulation results show that the FLC has met both robustness and performance requirements.
