The extent and depth of the event plan determines the scope of pedagogical experience in situations and consequently the quality of immersive learning based on our simulated world. In contrast to planning in conventional narrative-based systems mainly pursuing dramatic interests, planning in virtual world-based pedagogical systems strive to provide realistic experiences in immersed situations. Instead of story plot comprising predetermined situations, our inter-event planning method aims at simulating diverse situations that each involve multiple events coupled via their associated agents' conditions and meaningful associations between events occurring in a background world. The specific techniques to realize our planning method include, two-phase planning based on inter-event search and intra-event decomposition (down to the animated action level); autonomous and independent agents to behave proactively with their own belief and planning capability; full-blown background world to be used as the comprehensive stage for all events to occur in; coupling events via realistic association types including deontic associations as well as conventional causality; separation of agents from event roles; temporal scheduling; and parallel and concurrent event progression mechanism. Combining all these techniques, diverse exogenous events can be derived and seamlessly (i.e., semantically meaningfully) integrated with the original event to form a wide scope of situations providing chances of abundant pedagogical experiences. For effective implementation of plan execution, we devise an execution scheme based on multiple priority queues, particularly to realize concurrent progression of many simultaneous events to simulate its corresponding reality. Specific execution mechanisms include modeling an action in terms of its component motions, adjustability of priority for agent across different events, and concurrent and parallel execution method for multiple actions and its expansion for multiple events.
The Sortie Generation Rate (SGR), which measures the number of sorties that an airbase can produce per unit of time, is crucial for assessing operational capacity. However, the unique spatial and environmental constraints on aircraft carriers complicate the direct application of land-based SGR studies to maritime settings. This study introduces a framework for analyzing the Sortie Generation Process (SGP) on aircraft carriers, using discrete event simulation adapted to these constraints. This approach conceptualizes the SGP similar to a logistics and production system, wherein sorties are systematically generated through the operations of the aircraft. The proposed framework defines and implements the necessary simulation functions with the discrete event simulation method for the purpose of SGP analysis. Through a series of experiments, this study demonstrates the framework's effectiveness and its practical applicability to aircraft carrier operations, potentially enhancing sortie generation capabilities in naval aviation.
Proposed in this paper is a modeling and simulation methodology for a virtual manufacturing environment. Based on DEVS formalism[Zeigler 76], the proposed model, so called GKDEVS, is designed to descript the geometrical knematic structure as well as event-driven and continuous state dynamics. In terms of abstract simulation algorithm[Zeigler 84], the simulation method of GKDEVS is proposed for combined discrete-continuous simulation. Using the GKDEVS, and FMS model consisting of a turing machine, a 3-axis machine and a RGV-mounted robot is constructed and simulated.
The noise in a power signal degrades the detection rate of the power quality (PQ) event signals. We present a new wavelet de-noising technique for PQ event detection that employs the correlation-based thresholding instead of the wavelet-scale-based thresholding of existing schemes. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is more robust to Gaussian and impulsive noisy conditions and has further improved detection ratio than existing schemes.
Congestion in WSN increases energy dissipation rates of sensor nodes as well as loss of packets and thereby hinders fair and reliable event detections. We find that one of the key reasons of congestion in WSN is allowing sensing nodes to transfer as many packets as possible. This is due to the use of CSMA/CA that gives opportunistic media access control. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient congestion avoidance protocol that includes source count based hierarchical and load adaptive medium access control. Our proposed mechanism ensures load adaptive media access to the nodes and thus achieves fairness in event detection. The results of simulation show our scheme exhibits more than 90% delivery ratio with retry limit 1, even under bursty traffic condition which is good enough for reliable event perception.

Security administrators of companies and organizations need to come up with proper countermeasures against cyber-attacks considering infrastructures and security policies in their possession. In order to develop and verify such countermeasures, the administrators should be able to reenact both cyber-attacks and defenses. Simulations can be useful for the reenactment by overcoming its limitations including high risk and cost. If the administrators are able to design various scenarios of cyber-attacks and to develop simulation models from their viewpoints, they can simulate desired situations and observe the results more easily. It is challenging to simulate cyber-security issues, because there is lack of theoretical basis for modeling a wide range of the security field as well as pre-defined basic components used to model cyber-attacks. In this paper, we propose a modeling method for cyber-security simulations by developing a basic component and a composite model, called Abstracted Cyber-Security Unit Model (ACSUM) and Abstracted Cyber-security SIMulation model (ACSIM), respectively. The proposed models are based on DEVS(Discrete Event systems Specification) formalism, a modeling theory for discrete event simulations. We develop attack scenarios by sequencing attack behaviors using ACSUMs and then model ACSIMs by combining and abstracting the ACSUMs from a security perspective. The concepts of ACSUM and ACSIM enable the security administrators to simulate numerous cyber-security issues from their viewpoints. As a case study, we model a worm scenario using ACSUM and simulate three types of simulation models based on ACSIM from a different security perspective.
