In this paper, we propose a named entity and event annotation tool for cultural heritage information corpus construction. Focusing on time, location, person, and event suitable for cultural heritage information management, the annotator writes the named entities and events with the proposed tool. In order to easily annotate the named entities and the events, the proposed tool automatically annotates the location information such as the line number or the word number, and shows the corresponding string, formatted as both bold and italic, in the raw text. For the purpose of reducing the costs of the manual annotation, the proposed tool utilizes the patterns to automatically recognize the named entities. Considering the very little training corpus, the proposed tool extracts simple rule patterns. To avoid error propagation, the proposed patterns are extracted from the raw text without any additional process. Experimental results show that the proposed tool reduces more than half of the manual annotation costs.

Recognizing spatial information associated with events expressed in natural language text is essential not only for the interpretation of such events and but also for the understanding of the relations among them. However, spatial information is rarely mentioned as compared to events and the association between event and spatial expressions is also highly implicit in a text. This would make it difficult to automate the extraction of spatial information associated with events from the text. In this paper, we give a linguistic analysis of how spatial expressions are associated with event expressions in a text. We first present issues in annotating narrative texts with reference relations between event and spatial expressions, and then discuss surface-level linguistic characteristics of such relations based on the annotated corpus to give a helpful insight into developing an automated recognition method.

TimeML is a markup language for events and temporal expressions in natural language, proposed in Pustejovsky et al. (2003) and latter standardized as ISO-TimeML (ISO 24617-1:2009). In this paper, we propose the further specification of ISO-TimeML for the Korean language with the concrete and thorough examination of real world texts. Since Korean differs significantly from English, which is the first and almost only extensively tested language with TimeML, one continuously run into theoretical and practical difficulties in the application of TimeML to Korean. We focus on the discussion for the consistent and efficient application of TimeML: how to consistently apply TimeML in accordance with Korean specificity and what to be annotated and what not to be, i.e. which information is meaningful in the temporal interpretation of Korean text, for efficient application of TimeML.
