Two different types of algorithms were developed and applied to detect the partial faults of a multi-type air conditioning system. Partial faults include the compressor valve leakage, the refrigerant pipe partial blockage, the condenser fouling, and the evaporator fouling. The first algorithm was developed by using mathematical models and parity relations, and the second algorithm was developed by using mathematical models and a RBF neural network. Test results showed that the second algorithm was better than the first algorithm in detecting various partial faults of the system. Therefore, the algorithm developed by using mathematical models and a RBF neural network may be used for the detection of partial faults of an air-conditioning system.
The fault diagnosis technologies may be applied in order to decrease the energy consumption and the maintenance cost of an air-conditioning system. In this paper, a fault diagnosis algorithm was developed by using a neural no-fault model and a dual fuzzy logic. Five different faults, such as the compressor valve leakage, the liquid line blockage, the condenser fouling, the evaporator fouling, and the refrigerant leakage of an air-conditioning system, were considered. The fault diagnosis algorithm was tested by using a fault simulation facility. Test results showed that the algorithm developed for this study was effective to detect and diagnose various faults. Therefore, this algorithm may be practically used for the fault diagnosis of an air-conditioning system.

The fault detection and diagnosis technology may be applied in order to decrease the energy consumption and the maintenance cost of the air-conditioning system. In this paper, two fault detection methods were considered. One is a generic neural network, and the other is an moving average neural network. In order to compare the performance of fault detection results from these methods, two different types of faults in an air-conditioning system were applied. These are the condenser 30% fouling and the evaporator fan 25% slowdown. Test results showed that the moving average neural network was more effective for the detection of partial faults in the air-conditioning system.
The fault detection and diagnosis technology may be applied in order to decrease the energy consumption and the maintenance cost of the air-conditioning system. To detect partial faults of the air-conditioning system, a neural network algorithm may be used. In this study, the neural network algorithm using normalized input data by the standard deviation was applied. And the [7$\times$10$\times$10$\times$1] neural network structure was selected. Test results showed that the neural network algorithm using normalized input data was very effective to detect the condenser fouling and the evaporator fan fault of an air-conditioning system.
The fault detection and diagnosis technology may be applied in order to decrease the energy consumption and the maintenance cost of the air-conditioning system. In this study, two different types of faults in the air-conditioning system, such as the condenser fouling and the evaporator fan slowdown, were considered. The neural network algorithm combined with data preprocessor was developed and applied to detect the faults of the real system. Test results show that this method is very effective to detect the faults in the air-conditioning system. Therefore, this developed method can be used for the development of the air-conditioner fault detection system.
A study of scaling and heat transfer has been carried out for a vertical tube evaporator in which $CaSO_4$ saturated water flows upward. Experimental apparatus including vacuum chambers and heaters has been designed and manufactured to study scaling phenomena for three different pressures(1atm, 0.27atm and 0.16atm). Overall heat transfer coefficients have been measured and shown to decrease with time as scaling proceeds. After the end of experiments, the vertical tube has been cut to measure the thickness of scale at different heights. Below the height where the bulk fluid temperature does not reach saturated temperature, the thickness of scale increases, however, beyond that height occurring saturated condition, the thickness does not vary much or even decreases a little. The measured fouling resistances also support these variations of scale thickness.

This study deals with on-line fault detection and diagnosis for heat exchanger of variable speed refrigeration system. Conventional studies about fault of heat exchanger in refrigeration system have used temperature and pressure information. The temperature and pressure are able to be used valuably for faults detection of constant speed refrigeration system. However in case of variable speed refrigeration system, the temperature and pressure are no longer useful information for fault detection due to compensation effect of feedback controller. While current information is possible to detect faults of variable speed refrigeration system. The current information was detected in an inverter, it was used after transforming rms value. The faults of variable speed refrigeration system are divided into electrical faults and mechanical faults. We performed fault detection and diagnosis about heat exchanger among mechanical faults such as condenser fouling and evaporator fan fouling through some experiments.
River water is higher in temperature than the surrounding environment during the winter. It is highly suitable a heat source for heat pump system. Despite its suitability, however, it is not widely used, due to its fouling and corrosive nature in heat exchanger tubes of evaporator. It is designed prior-treatment system which come into direct contact with the river water, such as auto-seamer, ozone generator for bactericidal test and auto-cleaning system. And it is analyzed treatment effects for its operation. It is designed two-stage compression heat pump system using R-134a with heating load 35.16kW, ad analyzed its performance. As a result it is obtained 3.08 COP when mid-point pressure is 1,200kPa, and bypass ratio of flowing refreigerant to high-stage compressor is 25.1%
In the Shell coal gasification process, the syngas produced in a gasifier passes through a syngas cooler for steam production and temperature control for gas cleaning. Fly slag present in the syngas may cause major operational problems such as erosion, slagging, and corrosion, especially in the upper part of the syngas cooler (gas reversal chamber, GRC). This study investigates the flow, heat transfer and particle behaviors in the GRC for a 300 MWe IGCC process using computational fluid dynamics. Three operational loads of 100%, 75% and 50% were considered. The gas and particle flows directly impinged on the wall opposite to the syngas inlet, which may lead to erosion of the membrane wall. The heat transfer to the wall was mainly by convection which was larger on the side wall at the inlet level due to the expansion of the cross-section. In the evaporator below the GRC, the particles were concentrated more on the outer channels, which needs to be considered for alleviation of fouling and blockage.
