  • Resistive heating sources are widely used to prepare thin films by vapor deposition because they are cheap, and easy to install and handle in vacuum system. Graphite is one of materials used to make the resistive heating source, but until now only limited applications have been possible as it reacts easily with evaporating materials at high temperature. In this study, evaporation characteristics of aluminum have been investigated by using graphite boat thermally treated with BN powder. The employed graphite boat has been prepared by spray-coating BN power onto the cavity surface of the boat and thermal treatment with aluminum in vacuum at the temperature of more than $1400^{\circ}C$. The voltage-current characteristics as well as resistivity changes of the graphite boat have been investigated during aluminum evaporation according to the applied voltage and time. The evaporation aspect has been picturized during flash evaporation for 40 seconds based on the characterization results. The evaporation rate of the graphite boat has been compared with that of BN boat. The graphite boat showed some different characteristics compared with BN boat, in that the evaporation occurred at the last stage of flash evaporation. The film appearance according to the applied voltage has been compared, and also the reflectance of the resulting film has been investigated according to the film thickness. It has been found that the graphite boat thermally treated with BN powder can be used for aluminum evaporation without problem.

  • Evaporation and ignition characteristics of fuel droplet have major influences on the efficiency and performance of engine. In the present study the experiment of evaporation and self-ignition of single fuel was performed under the various ambient conditions. An individually suspended droplet of n-heptane n-hexadecane ethyl-alcohol and light oil were employed as a liquid droplet. Evaporation and ignition characteristics were measured by using the video-camera and image processing technique under the various ambient temperatures (up to 1000310 OC)and partial pressure of oxigen(up to 60%) The evaporation curve shows that the droplet life time ignition delay time decreases as the ambient temperature and partial pressure of oxigen increase, The temperature variations of droplet were also reported for various fuel and ambient temperatures. The numerical simulations were carried out to predict droplet diameter and temperature with favorable agreement.

  • This study aims to experimentally investigate the evaporation characteristics of nanofluid droplet on heated surface at boiling temperature of DI-water. In particular, textured surface was used to examine the effect of wettability on evaporation. At the initial stage of evaporation process, dynamic contact angle (DCA) of nanofluid droplet with 0.01 vol.% concentration on textured surface rapidly increased over its equilibrium contact angle by generated large bubble inside the droplet due to lower wettability. However, contact angle of nanofluid droplet with higher concentration on textured surface decreased with surface tension. In addition, total evaporation time of droplet on textured surface was considerably delayed due to reduction of contact area between droplet and solid surface. Thus, evaporation characteristics were highly affected by the nanofluid concentration and surface wettability.

  • Electron beam evaporation source is widely used to prepare thin films by physical vapor deposition because it is very effective to vaporize materials and there is virtually no limit to vaporize materials including metals and compounds such as oxide. In this study, evaporation characteristics of various metals and compounds from an electron beam evaporation source have been studied. The 180 degree deflection type electron beam evaporation source which has 6-hearth crucibles and is capable of inputting power up to 10 kW was employed for evaporation experiment. 36 materials including metals, oxides and fluorides have been tested and described in terms of optimum crucible liner, evaporation state, stability, and so on. Various crucible liners have been tried to find out the most effective way to vaporize materials. Two types of crucible liners have been employed in this experiment. One is contact type liner, and the other is non-contact type one. It has been tried to give the objective information and the most effective evaporation method on the evaporation of materials from the electron beam evaporation source. It is concluded that the electron beam evaporation source can be used to prepare good quality films by choosing the appropriate crucible liner.

  • The present study investigates the evaporation heat transfer characteristics of nanofluid droplet for different nanoparticle sizes. Also, the heat transfer coefficient was measured at different nanoparticle concentrations during evaporation. From the experimental results, it is found that the evaporation behavior of sessile droplet can be considered as constant radius mode due to pinning effect. The total evaporation time of sessile droplet decreases with nanoparticle size up to 7.9% for 0.10 vol% nanofluid droplet. As nanoparticle concentration increases, the clear difference in heat transfer coefficient is observed, showing that the size effect should be examined. This result would be helpful in designing the correlation between the nanoparticle size and the heat transfer characteristics for various applications.

  • The evaporation heat transfer characteristics of propane(R-290) in horizontal small diameter tubes were investigated experimentally. The test tubes have inner diameters of 1 mm and 4 mm. Local heat transfer coefficients were measured at heat fluxes of 12, $24\;kW/m^2$, mass fluxes of 150, $300\;kg/m^2s$, and evaporation temperature of $15^{\circ}C$. The experimental results showed that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R-290 has an effect on heat flux, mass flux, tube diameter, and vapor quality. The evaporation heat transfer of R-290 has an influenced on nucleate boiling at low quality and convective boiling at high quality. The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R-290 increases with decreasing inner tube diameter. And the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R-290 is about 1~3 times higher than that of R-134a.

  • This study investigates the evaporation characteristics of paired sessile droplets on a heated substrate. In particular, the evaporation time and contact line behaviors were analyzed based on the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The contact line behavior and volume variations were visualized using the shadowgraph method. It was observed that the contact diameter and contact angle exhibited similar behavior for both single and paired droplets regardless of the droplet-to-droplet distance and substrate temperature. The paired droplets demonstrated a longer evaporation time than the single droplet due to the vapor accumulation between the droplets. Furthermore, the scaled lifetime, defined as the ratio of evaporation time between paired and single droplets, increased as the droplet-to-droplet distance decreased and decreased as the substrate temperature increased, attributed natural convection.

  • We have investigated the electro-optical characteristics and reliability of LEDs with the Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) electrodes formed by different deposition methods: electron beam evaporation, sputtering, and hybrid method of electron beam evaporation and subsequent sputtering. The deposition method of the ITO electrode has significant influence on the electro-optical characteristics and reliability of LEDs. The LEDs with the ITO electrodes formed by sputtering and electron beam evaporation have problems caused by sputtering damage and increased electrical resistance, respectively, and the problems have been solved by the hybrid method.

  • In this study, the evaporation characteristics of water or nanofluid droplets on a heated surface was investigated by visualization of the evaporation process and evaluation of the heat transfer coefficient using the droplet temperature measured. The evaporation characteristics was compared between water and nanofluid droplets and the effects of the mass ratio of nanofluid and the inclination of heated surface were analyzed. The heat transfer rate of nanofluid droplet was higher than that of water droplet. The heat transfer coefficient was increased with the increase of the mass ratio of nanofluid. The effect of the inclination of heated surface was much higher than that of fluid type used, which indicates that the inclination of heated surface should be considered as one of influential parameters in the spray cooling process.

  • An experimental study on the characteristics of a dewatering due to vacuum evaporation in the waste lubrication oil were performed using a lab scale system. Evaporation characteristics were investigated for various performance factors. Results of evaporation characteristics as a function of vacuum pressure, oil temperature, initial water concentration, and nozzle type were obtained. Increasing the oil temperature and altering the nozzle type were found to increase the evaporation rate without increasing vacuum pressure requirement. The best performance is achieved for the nozzle which made porous material.
