In order to evaluate the applicability of thermosyphon as an equipment of heat transfer to the case where natural of low temperature and low density is necessary and to propose the possibility of using natural energy being clean and inexhaustible, a thermosypon using methanol as working fluid was constructed and its transfer characteristics were analysed. The wall temperature of the thermosyphon was maintained relatively uniform after rapid increase until after being heated about ten minutes regardless of the level of input powers to the evaporating section. Inner pressure of the thermosyphon increased rapidly until after ten minutes, and then increased slowly depending on the level of input power. But heat transfer coefficient of the condensible section decreased in inverse proportion to input powers of 250~300W, showing $1008.3{\sim}829.8W/m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C$. For the input powers of the thermosyphon within the range of 100~250W, heat transferred and heat flux increased relatively linearly showing, in the case of input powers of 250~300W, heat transfer efficiency considerable increased, showing 63.8%.
One of the effective means to transfer the heat into and from the energy storage medium is thermosyphon. In this study, a two-phase closed thermosyphon with circular fins was used to extract the thermal energy stored in paraffin wax (Sunoco p-116). Heat transfer characteristics along the heat flow path were investigated as well as the overall performance. Some of the important results are as follows: (1) The temperature distribution of the wax in the radial direction was always maintained fairly uniformly; (2) Compared with bare thermosyphon, the heat transfer rate was vastly improved in the early stage of the experiment; and (3) Heat transfer coefficient between the wax and evaporating section of thermosyphon remained nearly constant during the experiment.

To investigate the effect of oil on evaporation heat transfer of plate heat exchanger, evaporation heat transfer experiment was carried out using experimental apparatus for micro gear pumped R134a-oil circulation. By varying oil circulation rate of POE oil from 0 to 5%, evaporation heat transfer performance of plate heat exchanger was investigated. As OCR(Oil Circulation Ratio) increases, the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R134a decreases and pressure drop increases. When the evaporating temperature is $30^{\circ}C$ and the refrigerant mass flow rate is 80 g/s, evaporation heat transfer rate decreases by 10 % and pressure drop increases by 10% at 2% of OCR condition.

In order to replace CFC-502 which has been widely used in transportation and low temperature refrigeration system, performance tests using HFC-407A, HFC-404A and HFC-507 have been carried out. Measurements were conducted at two different condensing temperatures of $43.3^{\circ}C$and $54.5^{\circ}C$ for each refrigerant. System performance characteristics and heat transfer characteristics of each refrigerant were obtained at several compressor speeds and evaporating temperatures ranging from$-25^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$ Test results show that the use of tested alternative refrigerants without changing system components offers the potential performance improvement of a refrigeration system.

Experimental investigations have been carried out to examine the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of R-134a with the channel-bending angle (CBA) in microchannel heat exchangers. In this study, we examined the effects of evaporation temperature and Reynolds number of R-134a on the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of R-134a in microchannel heat exchangers with CBAs of $120^{\circ}$, $150^{\circ}$, and $180^{\circ}$ under counterflow conditions. Experimental results show that the evaporative heat transfer rate and evaporative heat transfer coefficient increased with an increase in the Reynolds number of R-134a. Further, the evaporative heat transfer rate corresponding to CBAs of $120^{\circ}$ and $150^{\circ}$ increased to values greater than the evaporative heat transfer rate corresponding to $180^{\circ}$ by approximately 17.1% and 13.3%, respectively, for evaporating temperatures in the range $4.9-14.9^{\circ}C$. The evaporative heat transfer coefficient was affected by the channel angle with increasing evaporative heat transfer coefficient at small channel bending angle.

Evaporation heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide($CO_2$), R-22, and R-134a in a horizontal smooth tube were measured and analyzed as a function of heat flux, mass flux, and evaporating temperature. The experiments were carried out by varying heat flux from 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$, mass flux from 170 to 340 $kg/m^2s$, and saturation temperatures of 5 and $10^{\circ}C$. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ decreased with a rise of quality due to an earlier liquid-film dryout as compared to R-22 and R-134a. Averaged heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ were 22-63% higher than those of R-22 and R-134a at all test conditions. The effects of mass flux and heat flux on averaged heat transfer coefficients were much greater in $CO_2$ than in R-22 and R-134a. When comparing $CO_2$ test results with the correlations in the literature, the existing models yielded large deviations at medium and high qualities. Therefore, a generalized correlation for $CO_2$evaporation heat transfer needs to be developed by including the effects of dryout phenomenon.

An experimental investigation was made to study the performance characteristics of evaporator having different fin configurations and tube inner grooves. Three different types of fin such as super slitted fin, slitted fin, plain fin, and two types of tube such as inner grooved tube, and bare tube, are tested varying the air velocity, evaporation temperature and superheat of refrigerant. Results show that in the range of air side Reynolds number $3{\times}10^3\;-\;1.5{\times}10^4$ evaporator with super slitted fin and inner grooved tube shows best performance. It is 80% higher in overall heat transfer coefficient and 2.6 times higher in pressure loss compared to that with plain fin inner grooved tube. Friction factor is found to be almost independent of evaporating temperature and degree of superheat, while Colburn j factor varies with evaporating temperature.
In electric commuter trains using AC motors, lots of GTO thyristors and diodes are needed for power controls. These semiconductors generate heat about 1~2 kW, and for cooling which perfluorocarbon(PFC) heat pipes have been in use for the last two decades. The present study was investigated on the effects of such important design parameters as structure of internal surface (grooved or smooth), fill charge ratio, and inclinating angle from a vertical on heat transfer coefficients at both evaporators and condensers. To obtain experimental data, several heat pipes of the same geometry of 520 mm long and diameter of 15.88 mm but different in fill charge ratio and internal surface structure were designed and fabricated. For prediction of the heat transfer coefficients, related expressions were examined and the results of calculations were compared with experimental data. Performance tests were conducted while heat pipes operated at mode of thermosyphons. High enhancements of heat transfer coefficient were obtained internal grooves. In these cases, the evaporating heat transfer coefficients distributed in the range of 2~5.5 kW/$m^2$K, with an increase of heat flux from 15~45 kW/$m^2$. These experimental data were in good agreement with Rohsenow's expression based on nucleate boiling when correction factor $C_R$=1.3 was encountered. In addition, the condensation heat transfer coefficients were distributed from 1.5 to 3.5 kW/$m^2$K, and the data were in good agreements with Nusselt's correlation, based on filmwise condensation on vertical plate, when choosing a correction factor $C_N=4$. A fill charge ratio of 40~100% were recommended, and the in clination angle effects were negligible when the angle was higher then 30$^{\circ}$.

An experimental investigation was carried out to examine the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of R-134a in a micro-channel heat exchanger. The micro-channel heat exchanger used in this study was a sort of plate heat exchanger. Micro-channels were fabricated on the SUS304 plate by the photo-etching process: 13 sheets of plates were stacked and bonded by the diffusion bonding process. The effects of the evaporating temperature, mass flux of R-134a, and inlet temperature of water were examined. As the difference between the inlet temperatures of R-134a and water increased, the heat transfer rate increased. The evaporative heat transfer coefficients obtained in this study range from 0.67 to 6.23 kW/$m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C$. The experimental correlation for the Nusselt number as a function of the Reynold number and $\Theta$ was suggested for the micro-channel heat exchanger.
