  • Early evacuations reduce the damage caused by catastrophic events such as terrorism, tsunamis, heavy rains, landslides, and river floods. However, even when warnings are issued, people do not easily evacuate during these events. To shorten the evacuation time, initiative-evacuation and its executors, initiative evacuees, are crucial in inducing other evacuations. The initiative evacuees take the initiative in evacuating and call out to their surroundings. This paper proposes a fast method to induce initiative-evacuation based on social graphs. The candidates are determined in descending order of the number of links for each person. The proposed method was evaluated through simulations. The simulation results showed a significant reduction in evacuation time.

  • Recently in Korea, in order to ensure evacuation safety within buildings, reviewing and evacuation assessment using computer simulations has been performed from the planning and design stages. Since the results from the assessment mainly depends on the initial values of input elements, it is important to establish element specific data. Nevertheless evacuation related experiments and research are still insufficient to apply overseas standards to domestic conditions. This study intended to conduct a experiment on evacuation movement speed by age as part of element-specific data construction for domestic occupant movement speed. After analyzing domestic and overseas studies on evacuation movement speed, we conducted the experiment of evacuation movement speed for 134 people. Then, by carrying out a comparative analysis of the results of the movement speed obtained from the experiment with overseas movement speeds, we followed the validation procedures of the experimental results under domestic evacuation conditions. The data derived from the experiment is expected to serve as a basis for the movement speed of domestic evacuation safety assessment.

  • Recently, due to fires in high-rise residential and commercial buildings and apartments in Ulsan and Busan, the issue of evacuation safety in the event of a building fire is being closely watched. In the evacuation safety design for these building fires, it is important to secure evacuation routes considering the spatial characteristics of the building or the characteristics of the occupants and to take measures to protect the evacuation routes in order to ensure the safety of the occupants in the event of a fire. Although simulation is mainly used in Korea to assess the safety of evacuation, there is a big difference in that the Building Standards Act provides tools that can be calculated more than simulation in neighboring Japan. In addition to the evaluation method, which is called the "Building Law Assessment Methods" in Japan, the research team considered that it is important to know the process of evaluation in future domestic research, and investigated the contents of the evaluation process and wanted to apply it first to domestic buildings in the future.

  • This paper presents a novel algorithm for searching evacuation paths in indoor disaster environments. The proposed method significantly improves the time complexity to find the paths to the evacuation exit by introducing a light-weight Disaster Evacuation Graph (DEG) for a building in terms of the size of the graph. With the DEG, the method also considers load balancing and bottleneck capacity of the paths to the evacuation exit simultaneously. The behavior of the algorithm consists of two phases: horizontal tiering (HT) and vertical tiering (VT). The HT phase finds a possible optimal path from anywhere of a specific floor to the evacuation stairs of the floor. Thus, after finishing the HT phases of all floors in parallel the VT phase begins to integrate all results from the previous HT phases to determine a evacuation path from anywhere of a floor to the safety zone of the building that could be the entrance or the roof of the building. It should be noted that the path produced by the algorithm. And, in order to define the range of graph to process, tiering scheme is used. In order to test the performance of the method, computing times and evacuation times are compared to the existing path searching algorithms. The result shows the proposed method is better than the existing algorithms in terms of the computing time and evacuation time. It is useful in a large-scale building to find the evacuation routes for evacuees quickly.

  • This thesis is based on the study of necessity of an addressable emergency broadcasting system to improve evacuation performance in order to minimize human casualty by avoiding the initial evacuation after fires such as the multi-unit dwelling fire in Euijeongbu in 2015. To minimize the damage from fire generated in a complex internal structure such as modern buildings, introduction of adaptable emergency broadcasting system, could increase the efficiency of evacuation by preventing of initial mistaken evacuation directions by alerting the accurate location of fire to the occupants, is needed. As such, this study designed and fabricated the addressable emergency broadcasting system using the existing addressable system. Its performance was compared with a conventional emergency broadcasting system to confirm the necessity of the addressable emergency broadcasting system to improve evacuation performance. The test result showed that the addressable emergency broadcasting system decreased the evacuation time by up to 30.3% in a small-scale model evacuation performance experiment, up to 54.6% in a hallway evacuation performance experiment compared to the conventional emergency broadcasting system.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the minimum effective width (90cm) of the exit of the evacuation stairway installed in accordance with the Building Act and the evacuation time of all occupants using the corresponding floor from an evacuation point of view. Method: The evacuation simulation (Pathfinder) was used to investigate how the change in doorway width affects the evacuation time of occupants. Result: It was found that as the effective width of the doorway became larger than the minimum standard of 90cm, the evacuation time to the evacuation stairs was shortened. This is also proof that the effective width of the evacuation stair entrance can be appropriately applied differently depending on the number of occupants on the floor. Conclusion: In the future, in order to secure evacuation safety of occupants, it is judged that the effective width standard for the exit of the evacuation stairway considering the total number of occupants by use is necessary. In addition, it is expected that the evacuation efficiency of occupants can be greatly increased if various effective width standards for entrances are made according to the number of occupants by use through research and experiments.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the direction of improvement of safety experience education through the analysis of the evacuation time experiment. For the study, test subjects were divided into groups of similar body size and weight. The test subjects were directly experienced four evacuation devices, and the experience time was measured. As a result of the analysis of the total time from the installation of the evacuation device to the escape, the time was measured in the order of Descending Life Line-Tilt-Down Rescue Line-Vertical Escape Chute-air safety mat. In the case of evaluating the evacuation time using evacuation mechanisms, the evacuation time was measured in the order of air safety mat-Tilt-Tilt-Down Rescue Line-Descending Life Line-Vertical Escape Chute. In the first and second experiments of the Descending Life Line, time differences were observed. The escape time using the Descending Life Line was reduced in the second experiment than in the first experiment. As shown in this result, education through experience has shown that behavioral confidence and time can be managed. The conclusion of this study is that the goal of safety education is to minimize human life and property damage. Therefore, in order to bring this effect to more people, it is necessary to make efforts to keep self-safe through experiential education.

  • The number of buildings is growing at a rapid pace in Korea. It is driven by significant economic improvements, the rapid population growth and urban centralization. Such being this case, some city are underway to building enlargement, Manhattanization. To Solve these problem and ensure the safety of live, fire Evacuation Simulation system is used for safe check of buildings. Forecasting an egress behavior in building fire is so important in order to construct a safe and reliable environment. But, currently most of the fire evacuation simulation system used in practice are foreign software that is not reflect korean conditions. Thus, This study focus on objectives that develop a fire evacuation system considering Korean Characteristics and create 3D space-based topology. so the system calculate evacuation path. This system developed as a result of research can be used by architectural designer in practice due to it is based 3D spatial information modeling.

  • In this paper, an acceleration based passenger evacuation simulation is performed. In order to describe a passenger‘s behavior in an evacuation situation, a passenger is modeled as a rigid body which translates in the horizontal plane and rotates along the vertical axis. The position and rotation angle of a passenger are calculated by solving the dynamic equations of motions at each time step. The destination force, the contact force, and the group force are considered as external forces and the moments due to each force are also considered. With the passenger model proposed in this paper, the test problems in International Maritime Organization, Maritime Safety Committee/Circulation 1238(IMO MSC/Circ.1238) are implemented and the effects of passenger rotation on the evacuation time are confirmed.
