The effect of cooling rate on the solidification microstructure and segregation behavior of 7075 and 7050 aluminum alloy was investigated. Samples were solidified with cooling rates from 0.3 to $17^{\circ}K/sec$. Using the cooling curves of each sample, liquidus, eutectic and intermetallic reaction temperatures were estimated. The microstructures were characterized in terms of dendrite arm spacing and eutectic volume fraction. The segregation behavior of each alloying element of these alloys in various cooling rates was discussed.
The reaction of ultra-small eutectic 58Bl-42Sn solder bump with Au/Ni/Ti and Au/Cu/Ti UBMs during reflow was studied. The eutectic Bi-Sn solder bumps of $46{\mu}m$ diameter were fabricated by using the evaporation method and were reflowed using the rapid thermal annealing system. The intermetallic compound was characterized using a SEM, an EDS, and an XRD. The $(Cu_xAu_{1-x})_6Sn_5$ compounds formed at the interface between Bi-Sn solder and Au/Cu/Ti UBM. On the other hand, in the Bi-Sn solder bump on Au/Ni/Ti UBM, the faceted and rectangular intermetallic compounds were observed on the solder bump surface and inside the solder bump as well as at the UBM interface. These intermetallic compounds were Identified as $(Au_{l-x-y}Bi_xNi_y)Sn_2$ phase.

We investigated the effects of Au eutectic reaction on Si thin film growth by hot wire chemical vapor deposition. Small SiC and Si nano-particles fabricated through a wet etching process were coated and biased at 50 V on micro-textured Si p-n junction solar cells. Au thin film of 10 nm and a Si thin film of 100 nm were then deposited by an electron beam evaporator and hot wire chemical vapor deposition, respectively. The Si and SiC nano-particles and the Au thin film were structurally embedded in Si thin films. However, the Au thin film grew and eventually protruded from the Si thin film in the form of Au silicide nano-balls. This is attributed to the low eutectic bonding temperature ($363^{\circ}C$) of Au with Si, and the process was performed with a substrate that was pre-heated at a temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ during HWCVD. The nano-balls and structures showed various formations depending on the deposited metals and Si surface. Furthermore, the samples of Au nano-balls showed low reflectance due to surface plasmon and quantum confinement effects in a spectra range of short wavelength spectra range.
Al-based alloys have recently attracted considerable interest as structural materials and light weight materials due to their excellent physical and mechanical properties. For the investigation of the potential of Al-based alloys, a surface porous $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy has been fabricated through a chemical leaching process. The formation and microstructure of the surface porous $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy is composed of an ${\alpha}$-Al dendrite phase and a single eutectic phase of $Al_2Cu$ and ${\alpha}$-Al. We intended to remove only the ${\alpha}$-Al phase and then the $Al_2Cu$ phase would form a porous structure on the surface with open pores. Both acidic and alkaline aqueous chemical solutions were used with various concentrations to modify the influence on the microstructure and the overall chemical reaction was carried out for 24 hr. A homogeneous open porous structure on the surface was revealed via selective chemical leaching with a $H_2SO_4$ solution. Only the ${\alpha}$-Al phase was successfully leached while the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase was maintained. The pore size was in a range of $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$ and the dealloying depth was nearly $3{\mu}m$. However, under an alkaline NaOH, aqueous solution, an inhomogeneous porous structure on the surface was formed with a 5 wt% NaOH solution and the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase was not preserved. In addition, the sample that was leached by using a 7 wt% NaOH solution crumbled. Al extracted from the Al2Cu phase as ${\alpha}$-Al phase was dealloyed, and increasing concentration of NaOH strongly influenced the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase and sample statement.
The study for direct synthesis of TaC carbide which was a reaction product of tantalum and carbon in the cast iron was performed. Cast iron which has hypo-eutectic composition was cast bonded in the metal mold with tantalum thin sheet of thickness of $100{\mu}m$. The contents of carbon and silicon of cast iron matrix was controlled to have constant carbon equivalent of 3.6. The chracteristics of microstructure and the formation mechanism of TaC carbide in the interfacial reaction layer in the cast iron/tantalum thin sheet heat treated isothermally at $950^{\circ}C$ for various time were examined. TaC carbide reaction layer was grown to the dendritic morphology in the cast iron/tantalum thin sheet interface by the isothermal heat treatment. The composition of TaC carbide was 48.5 at.% $Ti{\sim}48.6$ at.% C-2.8 at.% Fe. The hardness of reaction layer was MHV $1100{\sim}1200$. The thickness of reaction layer linearly increased with increasing the total content of carbon in the cast iron matrix and isothermal heat treating time. The growth constant for TaC reaction layer was proportional to the log[C] of the matrix. The formation mechanism of TaC reaction layer at the interface of cast iron/tantalum thin sheet was proved to be the interfacial reaction.

Tungsten heavy alloys with different ratios of Mo and Ni-Fe matrix were liquid-phase-sintered to investigate their microstructural evolution. Results indicated that increased Mo in the alloy promoted the formation of a (W,Mo)(Ni,Fe) type intermetallic compound in the furnace-cooled condition. It was a monoeutectic reaction when the added Mo content was higher than 49at.%, or a eutectic reaction when this value was between 37at,% to 49at.%. When Mo was added between 25at.% to 37at.%, the precipitation of the intermetallic compound took place by either a eutectoid or peritectoid reaction.
Forming mechanism of fibrous TiC during self-propagating high temperature synthetic reaction was analyzed and suggested. It was revealed that critical temperature for the stable fiber formation was not the melting point of TiC, but the eutectic reaction temperature of TiC and C. Minimum amount of TiC diluent addition required to form fibers was calculated to be 25.6%, which was consistent with the experimental result. Synthesized fibers were found hollow tube-like. The morphology was explained by the diffusion rates of C and Ti in TiC, and by the molar volume chnage of C during the reaction. Expanding shell model was suggested for the hollow fiber formation mechanism.
Laser surface Melting Process is getting hardening layer that has enough depth of hardening layer as well as no defects by melting surface of substrate. This study used CW(Continuous Wave) Yb:YAG and STD11. Laser beam speed, power and beam interval are fixed at 70mm/sec, 2.8kW and 800um respectively. Hardness in the weld zone are equal to 400Hv regardless of melting zone, remelting zone overlapped by next beam and HAZ. Similarly, microstructures in all weld zone consist of dendrite structure that arm spacing is $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$, matrix is ${\gamma}$(Austenite) and dendrite boundary consists of ${\gamma}$ and $M_7C_3$ of eutectic phase. This microstructure crystallizes from liquid to ${\gamma}$ of primary crystal and residual liquid forms ${\gamma}$ and $M_7C_3$ of eutectic phase by eutectic reaction at $1266^{\circ}C$. After solidification is complete, primary crystal and eutectic phase remain at room temperature without phase transformation by quenching. On the other hand, microstructures of substrate consist of ferrite, fine $M_{23}C_6$ and coarse $M_7C_3$ that have 210Hv. Microstructures in the HAZ consist of fine $M_{23}C_6$ and coarse $M_7C_3$ like substrate. But, $M_{23}C_6$ increases and matrix was changed from ferrite to bainite that has hardness above 400Hv. Partial Melted Zone is formed between melting zone and HAZ. Partial Melted Zone near the melting zone consists of ${\gamma}$, $M_7C_3$ and martensite and Partial Melted Zone near the HAZ consists of eutectic phase around ${\gamma}$ and $M_7C_3$. Hardness is maximum 557Hv in the partial melted zone.
In this study, we investigated the effect of Sb/RE on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast heavy sectioned, over 250mm thickness, ferritic ductile cast iron. Exothermic and thermal insulation material were equipped on the wall of sand cast mold having the dimensions of $250{\times}250{\times}250$ mm. The nominal composition of the molten metal was controlled to be on the eutectic composition and Sb was added about 0, 0.005 and 0.02% respectively. In the center of as-cast ingot without Sb addition, the solidification of chunky graphite was induced by the eutectic reaction that took long time, which caused the decrease of elongation and impact energy. In case that the value of Sb/RE is 0.8, the solidification of chunky graphite could be suppressed and the improvement of nodularity was observed. On the other hand, the excessive addition of Sb suppressed the solidification of chunky graphite but gave rise to the solidification of flake graphite and the increase of pearlite contents. This results in poor elongation and impact energy which is lower than those in the case of no Sb addition.
This study aimed to evaluate the performance of diffusion barriers in order to prevent fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI) between the metallic fuels and the cladding materials, a potential hazard for nuclear fuel in sodium-cooled fast reactors. In order to prevent FCCI, Zr or V metal is deposited on the ferritic-martensitic stainless steel surface by physical vapor deposition with a thickness up to $5{\mu}m$. The diffusion couple tests using uranium alloy (U-10Zr) and a rare earth metal such as Ce-La alloy and Nd were performed at temperatures between 660~800$^{\circ}C$. Microstructural analysis using SEM was carried out over the coupled specimen. The results show that significant interdiffusion and an associated eutectic reaction ocurred in the specimen without a diffusion barrier. However, with the exception of the local dissolution of the Zr layer in the Ce-La alloy, the specimens deposited with Zr and V exhibited superior eutectic resistance to the uranium alloy and rare earth metal.
