  • The erosion of solid particles in a pipe elbow was numerically investigated. A numerical procedure to estimate the sand erosion rate, as well as the particle motion, in the pipe elbow flow was introduced. This procedure was performed based on the combined empirical erosion model and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to consider the interaction between the particle motion and the eroded surface. The underlying turbulent flow on an Eulerian frame is described by the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with a $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model. The one-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian motion of the air flow and sand particles is employed to simulate the particle trajectories and particle-wall interactions on the pipe surfaces. The predicted CFD erosion magnitudes are compared with experimental data from pipe elbows. The erosion rate results do not reveal a good accordance between the simulation and experimental results. It seems that the CFD shows a slightly over-predicted erosion ratio.

  • This paper summarizes the components of an explicit aeroelastic solver developed especially for the simulation of dynamic fracture events occurring during the flight of solid propellant rockets. The numerical method combines an explicit Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) version of the Cohesive Volumetric Finite Element (CVFE) scheme, used to simulate the spontaneous motion of one or more cracks propagating dynamically through a domain with regressing boundaries, and an explicit unstructured finite volume Euler code to follow the flow field during the failure event. A key feature of the algorithm is the ability to adaptively repair and expand the fluid mesh to handle the large geometrical changes associated with grain deformation and crack motion.

  • A general scheme is developed to determine the Langrangian motions of water particles by the Eulerian velocity at their mean positions by using Taylor's theorem. Utilizing the Stokes finite-amplitude wave theory, the orbital motions and the mass transport velocity including the effects of higher-order wave components are determined. The fifth-order approximation of orbital motion gives very good predictions of actual water particle motion in Stokes fifth-order wave theory except near the free-surface. The fifth-order theory predicts the mass transport velocity less than that given by the existing second-order theory over the whole water depth.

  • In this study a new hybrid method is developed for solving flow-dominated transport problems accurately and effectively. The method takes the forward-tracking particle method for advection. However, differently from the random-walk Lagrangian approach it solves the diffusion process on the fixed Eulerian grids. Therefore, neither any interpolating algorithm nor a large enough number of particles is required. The method was successfully examined for both cases of instantaneous and continuous sources released at a point. Comparison with a surrounding 5-point Hermite polynomial method (Eulerian-Lagrangian method) and the random-walk pure Lagrangian method shows that the present method is superior in result accuracy and time-saving ability.

  • In this study, parametric analyses are performed using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian scheme for the collision behaviors of a vessel and an underwater slope that constitutes part of an artificial protective island. The vessel parameters considered in the analysis are bow angle, stem angle, draft, and impact velocity. The gradient of the slope, the friction coefficient between the bow and the slope, and soil strength are considered as parameters of the slope. For each parameter, the dissipated collision energy and the collision force are estimated from the behavior of the vessel, and the energy dissipation mechanism is identified in terms of the ground deformation. The collision force is assumed as an exponential function, and the effects of the parameters are estimated. As a result, only two parameters, the gradient of the slope and the friction coefficient between the vessel and the soil, can affect the exponential coefficient of the function. The dissipated energy by the soil can thus be estimated adequately. The relationship between the volume of the soil pushed out by the bow and the dissipated collision energy is estimated as a linear function. This relationship is independent of the magnitude of the collision energy, and affected more by the friction coefficient and the soil strength than by the parameters of the vessel.

  • This study aims to develop a FE Model to simulate dissimilar friction stir welding and to address its potential for fundamental analysis and practical applications. The FE model is based on Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Multiphysics systems are calculated using explicit time integration algorithm, and heat generations by friction and inelastic heat conversion as well as heat transfer through the bottom surface are included. Using the developed model, friction stir welding between an Al6061T6 plate and an AZ61 plate were simulated. Three simulations are carried out varying the welding parameters. The model is capable of predicting the temperature and plastic strain fields and the distribution of void. The simulation results showed that temperature was generally greater in Mg plates and that, as a rotation speed increase, not the maximum temperature of Mg plate increased, but did the temperature of Al plate. In addition, the model could predict flash defects, however, the prediction of void near the welding tool was not satisfactory. Since the model includes the complex physics closely occurring during FSW, the model possibly analyze a lot of phenomena hard to discovered by experiments. However, practical applications may be limited due to huge simulation time.

  • The fast pyrolysis characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass are investigated for a bubbling fluidized bed reactor by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To simulate multiphase reacting flows for gases and solids, an Eulerian-Eulerian approach is applied. Attention is paid for the primary and secondary reactions affected by gas-solid flow field. From the result, it is scrutinized that fast pyrolysis reaction is promoted by chaotic bubbling motion of the multiphase flow enhancing the mixing of solid particles. In particular, vortical flow motions around gas bubbles play an important role for solid mixing and consequent fast pyrolysis reaction. Discussion is made for the time-averaged pyrolysis reaction rates together with time-averaged flow quantities which show peculiar characteristics according to local transverse location in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor.

  • The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the oxidizer-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Eulerian particle flamelet model was used to predicted the NOx formation characteristics in the turbulent syngas swirling nonpremixed flames. Current numerical simulation was conducted for the syngas gas turbine combustor. Numericla results indicate that as the H2O portion is increased in diluent, the formation of NOx decreased effectively in turbulent syngas swirl nonpremixed flames.

  • Within fractionating devices existing in separation and purification industries, sieve trays are widely used as tower internals and their choice is due to economical attractiveness. While operating a trayed distillation tower weeping phenomenon has a critical effect on the efficiency, in this case study a weeping phenomenon was undertaken by means of numerical model in a rectangular sieve tray. Eulerian-Eulerian Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method was used and the obtained CFD results are in a good agreement with the experimental data in terms of weeping rate and pressure drop.

  • In this paper, flowfield and acoustic-field around moving bodies are simulated by the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation in the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method. Some effects are checked by comparing flaw about a square cylinder in ALE formulation and that in the fixed coordinates, and both agree very well. Matching procedure between the moving grid and fixed grid is also considered. The applied method in which the both grids are connected through buffer region is shown to be superior to moving overlapped grid. Dipole-like emissions of sound wave from harmonically vibrating bodies in two- and three-dimensional cases are simulated.
