The filling pattern and an adaptive grid refinement based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible transient viscous flow with free surfaces. The governing equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The mixed FE formulation and predictor-corrector method are used effectively for unsteady numerical simulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among four filling patterns at each triangular control volume. By adaptive grid refinement, the new flow field that renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. In this domain the elements in the surface region are made finer than those in the remaining regions for more efficient computation. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a water dam has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions with respect to time have been compared with the reported experimental results.
In the present paper, a direct forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) level set method is proposed to simulate the FSI (fluid-solid interaction) in two-phase flow. The main idea is to combine the direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) method with the level set method in the Cartesian coordinates. The DF/FD method is a non-Lagrange-multiplier version of a distributed Lagrange multiplier/fictitious domain (DLM/FD) method. This method does not sacrifice the accuracy and robustness by employing a discrete ${\delta}$ (Dirac delta) function to transfer quantities between the Eulerian nodes and Lagrangian points explicitly as the immersed boundary method. The advantages of this approach are the simple concept, easy implementation, and utilization of the original governing equation without modification. Simulations of various water-entry problems have been conducted to validate the capability and accuracy of the present method in solving the FSI in two-phase flow. Consequently, the present results are found to be in good agreement with those of previous studies.

A floating Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter, a Backward Bent Duct Buoy (BBDB), was simulated using a state-of-the-art, two-dimensional, fully-nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique. The hydrodynamic performance of the floating OWC device was evaluated in the time domain. The acceleration potential method, with a full-updated kernel matrix calculation associated with a mode decomposition scheme, was implemented to obtain accurate estimates of the hydrodynamic force and displacement of a freely floating BBDB. The developed NWT was based on the potential theory and the boundary element method with constant panels on the boundaries. The mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach was employed to capture the nonlinear free surfaces inside the chamber that interacted with a pneumatic pressure, induced by the time-varying airflow velocity at the air duct. A special viscous damping was applied to the chamber free surface to represent the viscous energy loss due to the BBDB's shape and motions. The viscous damping coefficient was properly selected using a comparison of the experimental data. The calculated surface elevation, inside and outside the chamber, with a tuned viscous damping correlated reasonably well with the experimental data for various incident wave conditions. The conservation of the total wave energy in the computational domain was confirmed over the entire range of wave frequencies.
The present study describes a numerical analysis for simulation of the sloshing of flows with free-surface which contained in a rectangular tank The SOLA-VOF (Volume of fluid) method uses a fixed mesh for calculating the motion of flow and the free-surface. This Eulerian approach enables the VOF method to use only a small amount of computer memory for simulating sloshing problems with complicated free-surface contours. The VOF function, representing the volume fraction of a cell occupied by the fluid, is calculated for each cells, which gives the locating of the free-surface filling any some fraction of cells with fluid. Using SOLA-VOF method, the study describes visualization about simulation of the sloshing of flows and damping effect by baffle. Translation and pitching motion of the forms have been investigated The time-dependent changes of free-surface height are used for visualization subject to several conditions such as fluid height horizontal acceleration, sinusoidal motion, and viscosity. The free-surface heights were used for comparing wall-force, which is caused by sloshing of flows. Baffle was Installed to reduce the force on the wall by sloshing of flows. Damping effects was extensively expressed under the conditions such as baffle shape and position.
Compression ignition direct injection diesel engines employed a high pressure injection system have been developed as a measure to improve a fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions. In order to understand the effects of the pressure variation, many experimental works have been done, however there are many difficulties to get data in engine condition. This work gives numerical results for the high pressure effects on spray characteristics in wide or limited space with near walls. The gas phase is modelled by Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled using the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form and the drop behavior on a wall is calculated with a new droplet-wall interaction model based on the experiments observing individual drops. The droplet distributions, vapour fractions and gas flows are shown in various injection pressure cases. In free spray case which the injection spray has no wall impaction, the spray dispersion and vapour fraction increase and drop sizes decrease with increasing injection pressure. The same phenomena appears more clearly in wall impaction cases.
Wave propagation in a three-dimensional (3D) fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) is studied based on velocity potential theory. The governing Laplace equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions on the moving free surface is solved using the indirect desingularized boundary integral equation method (DBIEM). The fourth-order predictor-corrector Adams-Bashforth-Moulton scheme (ABM4) and mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) method are used for the time-stepping integration of the free surface boundary conditions. A smoothing algorithm, B-spline, is applied to eliminate the possible saw-tooth instabilities. The artificial wave speed employed in MTF (multi-transmitting formula) approach is investigated for fully nonlinear wave problem. The numerical results from incorporating the damping zone (DZ), MTF and MTF coupled DZ (MTF+DZ) methods as radiation condition are compared with analytical solution. An effective MTF+DZ method is finally adopted to simulate the 3D linear wave, second-order wave and irregular wave propagation. It is shown that the MTF+DZ method can be used for simulating fully nonlinear wave propagation very efficiently.
Generally, mass concrete structural behavior is governed by the strain components. However, relevant guidelines in dam engineering evaluate the structural behavior of concrete dams using stress-based criteria. In the present study, strain-based criteria are proposed for the first time in a professional manner and their applicability in seismic failure evaluation of an arch dam are investigated. Numerical model of the dam is provided using NSAD-DRI finite element code and the foundation is modeled to be massed using infinite elements at its far-end boundaries. The coupled dam-reservoir-foundation system is solved in Lagrangian-Eulerian domain using Newmark-${\beta}$ time integration method. Seismic performance of the dam is investigated using parameters such as the demand-capacity ratio, the cumulative inelastic duration and the extension of the overstressed/overstrained areas. Real crack profile of the dam based on the damage mechanics approach is compared with those obtained from stress-based and strain-based approaches. It is found that using stress-based criteria leads to conservative results for arch action while seismic safety evaluation using the proposed strain-based criteria leads to conservative cantilever action.
The free-surface motions interacting with structures are investigated numerically using the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method proposed by Koshizuka et al. (1996) for solving incompressible flow. In the method, Lagrangian moving particles are used instead of Eulerian approach using grid system. Therefore the terms of time derivatives in Navier-Stokes equation can be directly calculated without any numerical diffusion or instabilities due to the fully Lagrangian treatment of fluid particles and topological failure never occur. The MPS method is applied to the numerical study on the fluid impact loads for wet-drop tests in a LNG tank, and the results are compared with experimental ones.
Cavitation is the dominant noise source of the marine vehicle. Of the various types of cavitation , tip vortex cavitation is the first appearance type of marine propeller cavitation and it generates high frequency noise. In this study, tip vortex cavitation behavior and noise are numerically investigated. A numerical scheme using Eulerian flow field computation and Lagrangian particle trace approach is applied to simulate the tip vortex cavitation on the hydrofoil. Vortex flow field is simulated by combined Moore and Saffman's vortex core radius equation and Sculley vortex model. Tip vortex cavitation behavior is analyzed by coupled Rayleigh-Plesset equation and trajectory equation. The cavitation nuclei are distributed and released in the vortex flow result. Vortex cavitation trajectories and radius variations are computed according to nuclei initial size. Noise is analyzed using time dependent cavitation bubble position and radius data. This study may lay the foundation for future work on vortex cavitation study and it will provide a basis for proper underwater propeller noise control strategies.
The paper presents a study aimed at understanding some characteristics of an interior explosion within a room with limited or no venting. The explosion may occur in ammunition storage or result from a terrorist action or from a warhead that had penetrated into this room. The study includes numerical simulations of the problem and analytical derivations. Different types of analysis (1-D, 2-D and 3-D analysis) were performed for a room with rigid walls and the results were analyzed. For the 3D problem the effect of the charge size and its location within the room was investigated and a new insight regarding the pressure distribution on the interior wall as function of these parameters has been gained. The numerical analyses were carried out using the Eulerian multi-material approach. Further, an approximate analytical formula to predict the residual internal pressure was developed. The formula is based on the conservation law of total energy and its implementation yields very good agreement with the results obtained numerically using the complete statement of the problem for a wide range of explosive weights and room sizes that is expressed through a non-dimensional parameter. This new formula is superior to existing literature recommendations and compares considerably better with the above numerical results.
