  • The paper presents a method for location of subsurface UXOs. The approach utilities gradient interpretation techniques (analytic signal, horizontal gradient and Euler methods) to locate the objects. Then, linear least-squares technique, we obtain the magnetization location of the sources. We demonstrate the practical utility of the method using marine magnetic field data.

  • The elliptic random field is an extension to the Gaussian random field. We proved a theorem which characterizes the elliptic random field. We proposed a heuristic approach to derive an approximation to the distribution of the size of one connected component of its excursion set above a high threshold. We used this approximation to approximate the distribution of the largest cluster size. We used simulation to compare the approximation with the exact distribution.

  • The non-linear differential equations of motion of a fluid conveying curved pipe are derived by making use of Hamiltonian approach. The extensible dynamics of the pipe is based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Some significant differences between linear and nonlinear equations and the basic analysis results are discussed. Using eigenfrequency analysis, it can be shown that the natural frequencies are changed with flow velocity.

  • In this paper we introduce in study a new class of complex Finsler spaces, namely the complex Randers spaces, for which the fundamental metric tensor and the Chern-Finsler connection are determined. A special approach is devoted to $K{\ddot{a}}ahler$-Randers metrics. Using the length arc parametrization for the extremal curves of the Euler-Lagrange equations we obtain a complex nonlinear connections of Lorentz type in a complex Randers space.

  • For the last twenty years fragment assembly in DNA sequencing followed the "overlap - layout - consensus"paradigm that is used in all currently available assembly tools. Although this approach proved to be useful in assembling clones, it faces difficulties in genomic shotgun assembly: the existing algorithms make assembly errors and are often unable to resolve repeats even in prokaryotic genomes. Biologists are well-aware of these errors and are forced to carry additional experiments to verify the assembled contigs. We abandon the classical “overlap - layout - consensus”approach in favor of a new Eulerian Superpath approach that, for the first time, resolves the problem of repeats in fragment assembly. Our main result is the reduction of the fragment assembly to a variation of the classical Eulerian path problem. This reduction opens new possibilities for repeat resolution and allows one to generate error-free solutions of the large-scale fragment assemble problems. The major improvement of EULER over other algorithms is that it resolves all repeats except long perfect repeats that are theoretically impossible to resolve without additional experiments.

  • Despite the high cost of memory and CPU time required to resolve the boundary layer, a viscous unstructured grid solver has many advantages over a structured grid solver such as the convenience in automated grid generation and vortex capturing by solution adaption. In present study, an unstructured Cartesian grid solver is developed on the basis of the existing Euler solver, NASCART-GT. Instead of cut-cell approach, immersed boundary approach is applied with ghost cell boundary condition, which can be easily applied to a moving grid solver. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model by Launder and Spalding is employed for the turbulence modeling, and a new wall function approach is devised for the unstructured Cartesian grid solver. Developed approach is validated and the efficiency of the developed boundary condition is tested in 2-D flow field around a flat plate, NACA0012 airfoil, and axisymmetric hemispheroid.

  • In this paper, an asymptotic method is employed to formulate nano- or micro-beams based on strain gradient elasticity. Although a basic theory for the strain gradient elasticity has been well established in literature, a systematic approach is relatively rare because of its complexity and ambiguity of higher-order elasticity coefficients. In order to systematically identify the strain gradient effect, an asymptotic approach is adopted by introducing the small parameter which represents the beam geometric slenderness and/or the internal atomistic characteristic. The approach allows us to systematically split the two-dimensional strain gradient elasticity into the microscopic one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and the macroscopic one-dimensional beam analysis. The first-order beam problem turns out to be different from the classical elasticity in terms of the bending stiffness, which comes from the through-the-thickness strain gradient effect. This subsequently affects the second-order transverse shear stress in which the surface shear stress exists. It is demonstrated that a careful derivation of a first strain gradient elasticity embraces "Gurtin-Murdoch traction" as the surface effect of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli-like beam model.

  • In this paper, nonlinear vibration of Euler-Bernoulli beams resting on linear elastic foundation is studied. It has been tried to prepare a semi-analytical solution for whole domain of vibration. Only one iteration lead us to high accurate solution. The effects of linear elastic foundation on the response of the beam vibration are considered and studied. The effects of important parameters on the ratio of nonlinear to linear frequency of the system are studied. The results are compared with numerical solution using Runge-Kutta $4^{th}$ technique. It has been shown that the Max-Min approach can be easily extended in nonlinear partial differential equations.

  • In this study, the unsteady flow field induced by a high-speed train passing through a tunnel is numerically simulated by using an axi-symmetric Euler Equation. The modified patched grid scheme applied to a structured grid system was used to handle the relative motion of a train. The hybrid-dimensional approach which mixed 1D and axi-symmetric dimension was used to reduce the computation time and memory storage. By employing the hybrid-dimensional approach, a long tunnel as much as 5 km was able to be simulated efficiently. The results show that the maximum pressure rise in the tunnel by the entrance of the train is a function of both train speed and train-tunnel cross-sectional area ratio. The unsteady pressure fluctuation in the tunnel and around the train was also investigated in the real condition; Korean high-speed train on the Seoul-Pusan line.
