  • A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from a ballistic range. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The variation of a virtual mass and the shape of projectile are added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation systems. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, drag histories and the major flow characteristics of the projectile.

  • In this work, a mathematical model of beam-column system carrying a double eccentric end mass system is investigated, and solved analytically based on the exact solution analysis. The model considers the case in which the double eccentric end mass is a rigid storage tank containing fluid. Both Timoshenko and Bernoulli-Euler beam bending theories are considered. Equation of motion, general solution and boundary conditions for the present system model are developed and presented in dimensional and non-dimensional format. Several important non-dimensional design parameters are introduced. Symbolic and/or explicit formulae of the frequency and mode shape equations are formulated. To the authors knowledge, the present reduced closed form symbolic and explicit frequency equations have not appeared in literature. For different applications, the results are validated using commercial finite element package, namely ANSYS. The beam-column system investigated in this paper is significant for many engineering applications, especially, in mechanical and structural systems.

  • The steady-state simplified spherical harmonics equations (SPN equations) are a higher order approximation to the neutron transport equations than the neutron diffusion equation that also have reasonable computational demands. This work extends these results for the analysis of transients by comparing of two formulations of time-dependent SPN equations considering different treatments for the time derivatives of the field moments. The first is the full system of equations and the second is a diffusive approximation of these equations that neglects the time derivatives of the odd moments. The spatial discretization of these methodologies is made by using a high order finite element method. For the time discretization, a semi-implicit Euler method is used. Numerical results show that the diffusive formulation for the time-dependent simplified spherical harmonics equations does not present a relevant loss of accuracy while being more computationally efficient than the full system.

  • The current study depicts and experimental work of the impulsive wave discharged from the exit of several kinds of right-angle bend pipes, which are attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The weak normal shock wave with Mach number from 1.02 to 1.20 is employed to obtain the impulsive wave propagating outside the exit of the pipe bends. The experimental data of the magnitude of the impulsive wave and its propagation directivity are analyzed to characterize the impulsive waves discharged from the right-angle bend pipes and compared with those from a straight pipe. The impulsive waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system. A computation work using the two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Euler equation is also carried out to represent the experimented impulsive waves. The results obtained show that a right-angle miter bend considerably reduces the magnitude of the impulsive wave and its directivity toward to the pipe axis, compared with the straight pipe. It is believed that the right angle miter bend pipe can play a role of passive control agianst the impulsive wave.

  • In the FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction) problems, two different governing equations are to be solved together. One is fur the fluid and the other for the structure. Furthermore, a kinematic constraint should be imposed along the boundary between the fluid and the structure. We use the combined formulation, which incorporates both the fluid and structure equations of motion into a single coupled variational equation so that it is not necessary to calculate the fluid force on the surface of structure explicitly when solving the equations of motion of the structure. A two-dimensional channel flow divided by a Bernoulli-Euler beam is considered and the dynamic response of the beam under the influence of channel flow is studied. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a P2P1 Galerkin finite element method with ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) algorithm. The internal structural damping effect is not considered in this study and numerical results are compared with a previous work fer steady case. In addition to the Reynolds number, two non-dimensional parameters, which govern this fluid-structure system, are proposed. It is found that the larger the dynamic viscosity and density of the fluid are, the larger the damping of the beam is. Also, the added mass is found to be linearly proportional to the density of the fluid.

  • There have been lots of interest on service and entertainment robots. To ensure that robots work in harmony with humans, their stability and compactness are some of the key issues. Obviously, robots with fewer wheels occupy a smaller floor area compared to those with more wheels. In addition, robots with fewer wheels, whose posture stabilities are maintained by feedback control, are stable even under larger accelerations and/or higher locations of the center of mass. To facilitate controller design, it is assumed that both pitch and roll dynamics are decoupled. The dynamic equations of motion for the proposed robot are derived from the Euler-Lagrange equation. To obtain the optimal balancing control law, linear quadratic regulator control methods are applied to the linearized dynamic equations. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed balancing control algorithm for a single-wheeled mobile robot.

  • A computational work has been performed to investigate the aerodynamics of a projectile which is launched from the two-stage light gas gun. A moving coordinate method for a multi-domain technique is employed to simulate unsteady projectile flows with a moving boundary. The effect of a virtual mass is added to the axisymmetric unsteady Euler equation system. The computed results reasonably capture the major flow characteristics which we generated in launching the projectile supersonically, such as the interaction between the shock wave and the blast wave, the interaction between the vortical flow and the barrel shock, and the steady under-expanded jet. The present computational results properly predict the velocity, acceleration, and drag histories of the projectile.

  • High-power pulsed laser ablation under atmospheric pressure is studied utilizing numerical and experimental methods with emphasis on recondensation ratio, and the dynamics of the laser induced vapor flow. In the numerical calculation, the temperature pressure, density and vaporization flux on a solid substrate are first obtained by a heat-transfer computation code based on the enthalpy method, and then the plume dynamics is calculated by using a commercial CFD package. To confirm the computation results, the probe beam deflection technique was utilized for measuring the propagation of a laser induced shock wave. Discontinuities of properties and velocity over the Knudsen layer were investigated. Related with the analysis of the jump condition, the effect of the recondesation ratio on the plume dynamics was examined by comparing the pressure, density, and mass fraction of ablated aluminum vapor. To consider the effect of mass transfer between the ablation plume and air, unlike the most previous investigations, the equation of species conservation is simultaneously solved with the Euler equations. Therefore the numerical model computes not only the propagation of the shock front but also the distribution of the aluminum vapor. To our knowledge, this is the first work that employed a commercial CFD code in the calculation of pulsed ablation phenomena.

  • This paper, which is an extension of a previous work by Viola et al. (2002), deals with the dynamic stability of beams under a triangularly distributed sub-tangential forces when the effect of an elastically restrained end is taken into account. The sub-tangential forces can be realised by a combination of axial and tangential follower forces, that are conservative and non-conservative forces, respectively. The studied beams become unstable in the form of either flutter or divergence, depending on the degree of non-conservativeness of the distributed sub-tangential forces and the stiffness of the elastically restrained end. A non-conservative parameter ${\alpha}$ is introduced to provide all possible combinations of these forces. Problems of this kind are usually, at least in the first approximation, reduced to the analysis of beams according to the Bernoulli-Euler theory if shear deformability and rotational inertia are negligible. The equation governing the system may be derived from the extended form of Hamilton's principle. The stability maps will be obtained from the eigenvalue analysis in order to define the divergence and flutter domain. The passage from divergence to flutter is associated with a noticeable lowering of the critical load. A number of particular cases can be immediately recovered.

  • The design load-carrying capacities of wooden shores depend on factors, such as the wood species and properties, and construction methods. This paper focuses on the construction methods, including an upright single shore, group of upright shores, group of inclined shores, butt connections and lap connections. This paper reports experiments to obtain critical loads and then developed an empirical equation based on Euler' formula for the critical loads and design load-carrying capacities. The test results show that the critical loads for an upright single wooden shore are greater than the average values for a group of upright shores, and the latter are greater than the average values for a group of inclined shores. Test results also show that the critical loads become smaller when butt or lap connections are used, butt connections possessing greater critical loads than lap connections. Groups of inclined shores are very popular at work sites because they have some practical advantages even though they actually possess inferior critical loads. This paper presents an improved setup for constructing groups of inclined shores. With this method, the inclined shores have larger critical loads than upright shores. The design load-carrying capacities were obtained by multiplying the average critical loads by a resistance factor (or strength reduction factor, ${\phi}$) that were all smaller than 1. This article preliminarily suggests ${\phi}$ factors based on the test results for the reference of engineers or specification committees.
