  • Most of the existing legacy DSL networks, about 80 million lines world-widely, adopted ‘ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) over DSL’protocol architecture for the effective interworking with the ATM-based regional backbone networks and for the effective support of native ATM-based multimedia application services. Recently, however, the regional backbone networks are moving towards Metro Ethernet networks, instead of the ATM networks, and most of the current multimedia applications are If-based, not native ATM-based. These environmental changes push the architecture of DSL networks to be accordingly changed, and the‘Ethernet over DSL’protocol architecture, instead of existing‘ATM over DSL’, is tried to be applied to the implementation of next generation DSL networks such as VDSL(Very high-rate DSL) . In this paper, we propose two different implementation models for next generation DSL networks in Metro Ethernet backbone environments, respectively EA(Ethernet-to-ATM) implementation model and RE(Ethernet-to-Ethernet) implementation model. And, a comparative analysis focused on the performance and the backward compatability with the legacy DSL networks will be presented.

  • The protection switching technology is widely adopted in the fiber-optical transmission equipments based on TDM(Time Division Multiplexing), such as PDH, SDH/SONET. A variety of protection switching algorithms for Ethernet networks and the progress of standardization are summarized in the document. There are several kinds of protection switching algorithms for Ethernet networks, such as STP, RSTP, MSTP and etc. However, since Ethernet signal move through detour route, it causes much time to recover. Accordingly, it is difficult to secure a usability of Ethernet networks and QOS(Quality of Service). Also, if the protection switching protocol standardized by IEEE and ITU-T is used, it remains a inherent network switching time for protection. Therefore, a specific protection switching algorithm for Ethernet are needed for seamless and stable operation of Ethernet networks service for Distribution Automation System(DAS). A reliable protection algorithm with no switching delay time is very important to implement Self-healing service for DAS. This study of FPGA based protection switching algorithm for Ethernet networks shows that in case of faults occurrence on distribution power network, immediate fault isolation and restoration are conducted through interaction with distribution equipments using P2P(Peer to Peer) communication for protection coordination. It is concluded that FPGA based protection switching algorithm for Ethernet networks available 0ms switching time is crucial technology to secure reliability of DAS.

  • Earlier researches have typically concentrated on discovering IP network topology, which implies that the connectivity of all Ethernet devices is ignored. But automatic discovery of Physical topology Plays a crucial role in enhancing the manageability of modem Metro Ethernet mesh networks due to the benefits of Ethernet services, including: Ease of use, Cost Effectiveness and flexibility. Because of proprietary solutions targeting specific product families and related algorithm which depends on Layer 2 forwarding table information it is impossible to discover physical topology in the Ethernet mesh networks. To cope with these shortcomings, in this paper we propose a novel and practical algorithmic solution that can discover accurate physical topology in the Ethernet mesh networks. Our algorithm divides the Ethernet mesh networks into bridged networks and host networks and those bridges located in boundary are named edge bridges. Our algorithm uses the standard spanning tree protocol MIB information for the bridged networks and uses the standard Layer 2 forwarding table MIB information for the host networks. As using the standard MIB information to discover physical topology we can offer interoperability guarantee in the Ethernet mesh networks composed of the various vendors' products.

  • Ethernet is being deployed in metropolitan area networks (MANs) as a lower-cost alternative to SONET-based infrastructures. MANs are usually required to support common communication services, such as voice and frame relay, based on legacy synchronous TDM technology in addition to asynchronous packet data transport. This paper addresses the clock synchronization problem that arises when transporting synchronous services over an asynchronous packet infrastructure, such as Ethernet. A novel algorithm for clock synchronization is presented combining time-stamp methods used in the network time protocol (NTP) with signal processing techniques applied to measured packet interarrival times. The algorithm achieves the frequency accuracy, stability, low drift, holdover performance, and rapid convergence required for viable emulation of TDM circuit services over Ethernet.

  • In this paper, the performance of switched ethernet networks with different topologies as an industrial control networks is analyzed. The switched ethernet eliminated data collisions on the network and can be used to transmit real-time data. While the amount of data on the network is small compared to the computer networks, the industrial control networks require the real-time data delivery. In this paper, we analyze and compare the network performance of switched ethernet networks with linear and tree topologies whether they satisfy the real-time data delivery requirement needed to be used as the industrial control networks.

  • Automatic discovery of physical topology plays a crucial role in enhancing the manageability of modern metro Ethernet networks. Despite the importance of the problem, earlier research and commercial network management tools have typically concentrated on either discovering logical topology, or proprietary solutions targeting specific product families. Recent works have demonstrated that network topology can be determined using the standard simple network management protocol (SNMP) management information base (MIB), but these algorithms depend on address forwarding table (AFT) entries and can find only spanning tree paths in an Ethernet mesh network. A previous work by Breibart et al. requires that AFT entries be complete; however, that can be a risky assumption in a realistic Ethernet mesh network. In this paper, we have proposed a new physical topology discovery algorithm which works without complete knowledge of AFT entries. Our algorithm can discover a complete physical topology including inactive interfaces eliminated by the spanning tree protocol in metro Ethernet networks. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by implementation.

  • We propose a fully converged Ethernet and TDM transport system. Developed Ethernet and TDM convergence system can support not only L2VPN service and premium multimedia service based on MPLS protocol but also TDM leased line service, simultaneously. Developed convergence system can provide high reliability for Ethernet data due to support protection and restoration function of circuit based networks. Evaluation for Ethernet and TDM path was successfully performed to show the typical application of the proposed system in the legacy networks.

  • In this paper, we have designed and implemented the integrated protocol gateway for the integration of CAN and Profibus networks. To do that, we used the Switched Ethernet as Backbone network, and each fieldbus network is connected by CAN/Ethernet or Profibus/Ethernet gateway, and each gateway perform the translation between fieldbus and Ethernet frames. Futhermore, we realized the real-time features in the environment of the Switched Ethernet by applying the distributed hard real-time scheduling algorithm among each gateways. To implement tht CAN/Ethernet and Profibus/Ethernet gateways, we used the Linux of kernel 2.6.31.12 real-time patched version(PREEMTED_RT), and we could verify successful message translation and real-time features through real implementation.

  • As broadband access is evolving from digital subscriber lines to optical access networks, Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are considered a promising solution for next generation broadband access. The point-to-multipoint topology of EPONs requires a time-division multiple access MAC protocol for upstream transmission. In this paper, we propose a new enhanced dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm with fairness called EFDBA for multiple services over EPONs. The proposed algorithm is composed of a fairness counter controller and a fairness system buffer in the optical line terminal. The EFDBA algorithm with fairness can provide increased capability and efficient resource allocation in an EPON system. In the proposed EFDBA algorithm, the optical line termination allocates bandwidth to the optical network units in proportion to the fairness weighting counter number associated with their class and queue length. The proposed algorithm provides efficient resource utilization by reducing the unused remaining bandwidth made by idle state optical network units.
