This study was designed to extracts from Orostachys japonicas were investigated to assess anti-oxidation and biological activity. Phenolic content was maximum of $10.56{\pm}0.32mg/g$ when extracted with 50% ethanol. In anti-oxidative activity, Orostachys japonicus electric donating activity was higher than 80% in both water and ethanol extract at $200{\mu}g/mL$. 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation decolorization of both water and ethanol extract was higher than 95.0% but antioxidant protection factor of water extract was higher than ethanol extract. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance of ethanol extract was higher than water extract. For antihypertensive effect determination, angiotesin converting enzyme of water and ethanol extract showed 6.67 and 7.98% each at $200{\mu}g/mL$. Ethanol extract of $200{\mu}g/mL$ showed xanthin oxidase inhibitory effect of 60.85% but was not shown with water extract. Orostachys japonicus ethanol extract showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity of 64.59% which was higher than kojic acid of control indicating higher whitening effect. In anti-wrinkle effect, ethanol extract at $50-200{\mu}g/mL$ showed collagenase inhibitory effect of 75.95-85.02% which was higher than 68.91-76.64% of epigallocatechin-gallate of control group. 50% ethanol extract showed higher elastase inhibitory activity than water extract. Therefore, Orostachys japonicus extracts were identified to have high anti-wrinkle effect. These results identify anti-oxidative activity, gout prevention, whitening effect, and anti-wrinkle effect which indicate the possibility as a source for functional material.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of ethanol extracts from Perilla frutescens var. acuta by varying the concentration of ethanol at 30, 50, 70, and 90% to utilize the effective extract of Perilla frutescens as a cosmetic and pharmaceutical material. In the DPPH antioxidant activity test, the 70% ethanol extract showed the highest activity with an IC50 of 680.98ppm. ABTS showed a high activity in the 50% ethanol extract and the 70% ethanol extract with an IC50 of 646.94 and 661.94 ppm, respectively. Each ethanol extract showed antioxidant activity at a certain concentration (100-10000 ppm), but did not show any significant relationship with the ethanol extract concentration. In RAW 264.7 macrophages induced by LPS, each of the ethanol extracts showed reduced NO production in all extracts, and more than 50% ethanol extract (10000ppm) inhibited nitric oxide formation by 85% or more. In particular, the 70% ethanol extract showed 90% or more nitric oxide production inhibition. In addition, the MTT assay showed no cytotoxicity at all concentrations (1250-10000 ppm) of each extract. In this study, the ethanol extract of Perilla frutescens var. acuta has antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory activity that is dependent on the concentration at each extraction concentration.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of Puerariae radix-ethanol extracts rich in isoflavone on the antio-xidative system of rats. For this purpose, first, Puerariae radix was extracted with ethanol, and its total isoflavone and puerarin contents were analysed. Second, female Sprague Dawley rats were fed for 6 weeks with four diets which were based on AIN96G diet and supplemented with Puerariae radix-ethanol extracts to contain isoflavone. The isoflavone contents of four experimental diets were 0 mg, 500 mg, 1,000 mg, 2,000 mg per kg diet, respectively (control, P0.05%,P0.1%, P0.2%). Liver and erythrocyte activities of antioxidative enzyme such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GSHpx) were measured. Also, plasma and liver malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, liver glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) concentrations were measured. The total isoflavone content of Puerariae radix-ethanol extract was 3067.6 mg per 100 g extract and the content of puerarin was 2557.4 mg per 100 g extract. The erythrocyte activities of GSH-Px and catalase were higher in group P0.1% and P0.2%. But SOD activity of erythocyte did not show any difference by the Puerariae radix-ethanol extract supplementation in diet. The activity of SOD in liver increased significantly by the supplementation of extract, showing highest level in P0.1% group. The liver GSH concentration increased significantly in group of P0.05%, P0.1%, and P0.2% compared with control group (p <0.05). The GSSG concentration in liver showed no difference by the supplementation of Puerariae radix extract from the control group, except P0.2% group. The plasma MDA concentration did not show any significant differences by the extract supplementation. But the liver MDA concentration decreased by the extract supplementation, showing the lowest level in P0.1 % diet group. These results suggest that the supplementation of Puerariae radix-ethanol extract can inhibit lipid peroxidation in liver and enhance the antioxidative defense competence of rats.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of medicinal herb extract on the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities against Helicobacter pylori, which is known as a ulcerogenic pathogen. The concentration of total phenolic compound of Scutellaria baicalensis(13.14%) was highest among water extracts and that of Ulmus parvifolia(15.12%) was highest among the ethanol extracts. The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis and of the ethanol extract of Ulmus parvifolia were 91.00% and 65.03%, respectively, in DPPH assay. The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Scutellaria baicalensis and of the ethanol extract of Ulmus parvifolia were 32.90% and 27.70%, respectively, in SOD assay. The antioxidant activity of the water extract of Ulmus parvifolia and of the ethanol extract of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer was 2.15 and 2.17, respectively, in TBARS assay. In disc method, Scutellaria baicalensis showed the highest anti-microbial activity against H. pylori, followed by Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer among the water extracts and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer showed the highest anti-microbial activity followed by Radix puerariae among ethanol extract.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of bamboo (SasacoreanaNakai)extracton chemical characteristics and biological activities. pH ranges of bamboo extract using water and ethanol were between 5.2 and 6.1. The concentration of total phenol compounds using ethanol extract was 0.51%, which was about 2.0 fold higher than that of water extract. The mineral concentrations were order of K, Mg, Ca, and Na, respectively. The nitrite scavenging ratio of bamboo extract using ethanol was 20.4% in vitro. In the case of bamboo extract using water, it was 18.0%. Especially, the maximum nitrite scavenging ratio was obtained at pH 1.5. On the other hand, when pH was increased from 3.0 to 6.0, the nitrite scavenging ratio was decreased from 16.2% to 3.0%. The antioxidant activity of bamboo extract in vitro was increased from 100 to 160% when bamboo extract using ethanol was increased from 10 to $50{\mu}L$. These results suggest that the bamboo extract of Sasa coreana Nakai using ethanol can be used in bioactive and functional material.

Each of these herbal medicines has studied on anti-aging effect in vitro. So this study was conducted to investigate efficacy and potency of JMB extract on dermal anti-aging and whitening. Methods : The JMB was extracted at room temperature by 80% ethanol. Collagenase and elastase inhibition activity in JMB ethanol extract were determined at 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000 mg/ml concentrations by colorimetric method. The toxic range of JMB ethanol extract was evaluated using MTT assay. Also, The inhibitory effect of JMB ethanol extract on tyrosinase activity and melanin contents in mouse melanoma cell line (B16F10 cell) was identified at 50, 100, 200 ㎍/㎖ levels by spectrometric assay. In each analysis, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and Kojic acid were used as positive controls, respectively. Results : The elastase and collagenase inhibitory activity of JMB ethanol extract increased dose dependently. Also, The MTT assay showed that JMB, up to 400 ㎍/㎖ concentration, exhibited no toxic effect to the B16F10 cell. And following the JMB ethanol extract treat, cellular melanin contents and tyrosinase activity were dose-dependently decreased compared to those of control. Conclusion : These results suggest that JMB ethanol extract has effects to inhibitory activity on dermal wrinkle enzyme and melanogenesis. Therefore, JMB has applicable benefits for development of materials or products to have whitening and anti-aging functions on skin.
Herein, water and ethanol extracts were obtained from the leaves, branches, kernels, and pericarp of Quercus gilva and subsequently analyzed for antioxidant activity and circadian rhythm regulation effects. Candidate components that may affect circadian rhythm and antioxidant activity were investigated to discover potential functional materials. Antioxidant activity was analyzed via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity assays, showing that the hot water extract exhibited higher activity than that of the ethanol extract. In particular, the branch extract showed high antioxidant activity. By measuring total contents of polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins, the hot water branch extract showed the highest concentrations, highlighting their significant contribution to the antioxidant activity. Examination of the circadian rhythm regulation of each extract showed that the ethanol extract exhibited greater impacts on the circadian rhythm amplitude compared to the water extract. The branch ethanol extract induced circadian rhythm amplitude changes via clock gene Bmal1 expression regulation. Determination of 12 phenolic compound concentrations showed that the branch ethanol extract contained many phenolic compounds, including catechin. This suggests that these com- pounds affected circadian rhythm regulation. In conclusion, the hot water branch extract has potential as an natural antioxidant material, while the corresponding ethanol extract has potential as a functional material for regulating circadian rhythm.
This purpose of this study is to examine the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Persicaria hydropiper L. extract in 70% ethanol and in water, a medicinal herb, as an effort to examine the potential of medicinal herbs for development of antioxidants and natural preservative substitutes. The total poly-phenol content in the 70% ethanol extract and in the water extract were 19.88 mg/g and 7.46 mg/g, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity was 90.99% and 64.98% in the 70% ethanol extract and water extract, in which 70% ethanol extract showed a higher activity. The antioxidant effect of Persicaria hydropiper L. extract appears to be very good and due to its excellent growth inhibitory effect on food-poisoning-causing microorganisms in the food, it is thought to be utilized as a potential natural preservative substitute in many areas.
