  • In this paper, double ball-bar is used to estimate the geometric errors of a rotary table, which includes one-axial motion, two-radial motions and two-tilt motions, except the angular positioning error. To simplify the measurement procedures, three measurement steps have been designed and developed. At each measurement step, one end of the double ball-bar is fixed at the nose of spindle and the other end is located on the rotary table. And specific circular test path is planned to keep the distance between two balls as constant at ideal case. The relationship including the geometric errors of a rotary table and the measured distance between two balls which is distorted by the geometric errors is defined by using ball-bar equation. Each geometric error is modeled as $4^{th}$ order polynomial considering $C^1$-continuity. Finally the coefficients of polynomial are calculated by least-square method. Simulation is done to check the validation of the suggested method considering set-up errors and measurement noise. Suggested method is applied to estimate geometric errors of a rotary table of a 5-axis machine tool.

  • Estimation of rebar quantity may be used as an index to evaluate the economic feasibility of structural designs. However, when using the software to estimate the rebar quantity, there may be some limitations such as data loss caused by human errors and estimation delays caused by increased input time, since the information on arrangement of rebar is inserted manually. To solve the problems of such quantity estimation software, it is necessary to develop a method on automatic input/output of structural design information for quantity estimation and an algorithm for accurate estimation of rebar quantity. The purpose of this study is to improve the existing rebar quantity estimation by connecting with the database on information related to rebar estimation and the algorithm for rebar estimation, in order to develop an algorithm to estimate an accurate, net rebar quantity. The study result can be used as basic data for development of software for efficient structural designs and automatic framework estimation of buildings.

  • Accurate estimation of the robot's position has an important role in autonomous navigation. Odometry is one of the most widely used techniques for mobile robot positioning. However, odometry has a well-known drawback that the position errors are accumulated when the travel distance increases. The UMBmark method is the conventional odometry calibration scheme for two wheel differential mobile robots. In the UMBmark method, the approximations for small angles are used in order to simplify the calculations. In this paper, we propose the new calibration scheme by using experimental orientation errors. Kinematic parameters can be calculated accurately without approximations by using experimental orientation errors. The numerical simulation and experimental results show that the odometry accuracy can be improved by the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes an improved signal processing strategy for accurate feedwater flowrate estimation in nuclear power plants. It is generally known that ∼2% thermal power errors occur due to fouling Phenomena in feedwater flowmeters. In the strategy Proposed, the noises included in feedwater flowrate signal are classified into rapidly varying noises and gradually varying noises according to the characteristics in a frequency domain. The estimation precision is enhanced by introducing a low pass filter with the wavelet analysis against rapidly varying noises, and an autoassociative neural network which takes charge of the correction of only gradually varying noises. The modified multivariate stratification sampling using the concept of time stratification and MAXIMIN criteria is developed to overcome the shortcoming of a general random sampling. In addition the multi-stage robust training method is developed to increase the quality and reliability of training signals. Some validations using the simulated data from a micro-simulator were carried out. In the validation tests, the proposed methodology removed both rapidly varying noises and gradually varying noises respectively in each de-noising step, and 5.54% root mean square errors of initial noisy signals were decreased to 0.674% after de-noising. These results indicate that it is possible to estimate the reactor thermal power more elaborately by adopting this strategy.

  • Multi-way relay networks (MWRNs) allow multiple users to exchange information with each other through a single relay terminal. MWRNs are often incorporated with capacity achieving lattice codes to enable the benefits of high-rate signal constellations to be extracted. In this paper, we analytically characterize the symbol error rate (SER) performance of a functional decode and forward (FDF) MWRN in the presence of channel estimation errors. Considering M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with square constellations as an important special case of lattice codes, we obtain asymptotic expressions for the average SER for a user in FDF MWRN. The accuracy of the analysis at high signal-to-noise ratio is validated by comparison with the simulation results. The analysis shows that when a user decodes other users with better channel conditions than itself, the decoding user experiences better error performance. The analytical results allow system designers to accurately assess the non-trivial impact of channel estimation errors and the users' channel conditions on the SER performance of a FDF MWRN with M-QAM modulation.

  • The Markowitz portfolio selection model uses estimators to deduce input parameters. However, the estimation errors of input parameters negatively influence the performance of portfolios. Therefore, this model cannot be reliably applied to real-world investments. To overcome this problem, we suggest an algorithm that can exclude stocks with large estimation error from the portfolio by applying a tracking signal to the Markowitz portfolio selection model. By calculating the tracking signal of each stock, we can monitor whether unexpected departures occur on the outcomes of the forecasts on rate of returns. Thereafter, unreliable stocks are removed. By using this approach, portfolios can comprise relatively reliable stocks that have comparatively small estimation errors. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, a 10-year investment experiment was conducted using historical stock returns data from 6 different stock markets around the world. Performance was assessed and compared by the Markowitz portfolio selection model with additional constraints and other benchmarks such as minimum variance portfolio and the index of each stock market. Results showed that a portfolio using the proposed approach exhibited a better Sharpe ratio and rate of return than other benchmarks.

  • Based on the observed data for Clarithromycin released, three commonly used inflow models: the power, the exponential, and the logarithmic models are considered. Among them, the power model is used most in practice for simplicity. Using the numerical parameter estimation techniques, the parameters appeared in the model equations are estimated. Through the numerical estimation results using the several experimental data sets, the exponential model turns out to be best among the three models. More specifically, the sum of squares of absolute errors and the sum of squares of relative errors for the exponential model are reduced by 80-95 % for the experimental data sets and 60-90 % for the noise added data sets compared with those for the power and logarithmic models. A typical experimental data set is used in this paper to show the estimation method and its numerical results. The proposed numerical method and its algorithm are designed for estimating the parameters appeared in the model differential equations for which the exact form of the solution is unknown in general. The methodology developed can be applied to more general cases such as the nonlinear ordinary differential equations or the partial differential equations.

  • We evaluate the performance of the time-reversal (TR) prefilter and the weighted TR prefilter in an indoor wireless communication system with channel estimation errors. The TR prefilter uses a time-reversed channel as a prefilter to maximize received peak power. The equivalent channel of the TR prefilter is an 공분산 of the channel and the received peak power is maximized. When there are channel estimation errors, the equivalent channel is not an 공분산 of the channel and the received peak power cannot be maximized. The weighted TR prefilter minimizes the inter-symbol interference and maintains the received peak power. Thus, even when there are some channel estimation errors, the weighted TR prefilter can guarantee the received peak power.

  • This study was conducted to explore portion size estimation by comparing the measurement errors of food and macronutrient intake by photography estimation and 24-hour recall from weighing method. A total of 28 female participants aged 20-24 years old were provided a meal that included rice, chard soup with soybean paste, stir-fried squid, japchae, stir-fried boiled fish paste, lettuce geotjeori, and kimchi. Each portion was measured accurately, and food intake was measured using three dietary assessment methods. For the photography method, trained researchers estimated remaining food amount by analyzing photographs using a mean of four times. The measurement errors for the stir-fried squid and japchae were larger by the 24-hour recall method, while the error for kimchi was larger by the photography method. The correlation coefficients for each food, except chard soup with soybean paste, between the weighing method and photography method were 0.77~0.99 (p<0.001). The correlation coefficients of energy and intake of macronutrients between the weighing method and photography method were 0.85~0.86 (p<0.001). The results of this study demonstrate substantially less measurement error using the photography method than the 24-hour recall method. However, further research is needed to standardize various kinds of foods, photograph angles, serving plates, and serving style for establishment of reliable and valid portion size estimation using the photography method.

  • The Parameter Estimation for software existing reliability models, Goel-Okumoto, Yamada-Ohba-Osaki model was reviewed and Rayleigh model based on Rayleigh distribution was studied. In this paper, we discusses comparison of parameter estimation using maximum likelihood estimator and Bayesian estimation based on Gibbs sampling to analysis of the estimator' pattern. Model selection based on sum of the squared errors and Braun statistic, for the sake of efficient model, was employed. A numerical example was illustrated using real data. The current areas and models of Superposition, mixture for future development are also employed.
