  • Priority-based network service has been widely adopted for the Internet traffic management in the context of IETF differentiated services, and computing optimal prices for such priority-based service is the key topic in many pricing literature. While the equilibrium analysis has been commonly used to this end, many have criticized the validity of the underlying assumption of equilibrium analysis that user utility functions are precisely known. In this paper, we propose a solution for bridging the gap between the existing theoretical work on optimal pricing and the unavailability of precise user utility information in real networks. In the proposed method, the service provider obtains more and more accurate estimates of user utility functions from the initial imprecise knowledge by iteratively changing the price of service levels and observing the users' decisions under the changed price. Our contribution is two-fold. First, we have developed a general principle for estimating the user utility functions. Second, we have developed a novel method for setting the prices that can optimize the extraction of the knowledge about user utility functions. The extensive simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

  • Damage due to ice collision is the most serious threat for the structural safety of ships operating in arctic region. Since such hull damages are usually caused by the collision of floating ice at excessive voyage speed of ships, the authorities responsible for the shipping at arctic sea are required to provide the speed limit for safe voyage, so-called safe speed. In countries near arctic ocean, such as Canada and Russia, empirical methods to determine the safe speed of ships based on their long experience of arctic voyage have been established and applied them in the real arctic navigation. However, in Korea, it is not easy to accumulate the arctic voyage experience and related technical database, so it seems to be a realistic approach to adopt a safe voyage speed estimating method in arctic sea based on the ice collision simulation technology using the nonlinear finite element analysis. The aim of this study is to develop a technique for estimating the safe voyage speed of vessels operating at arctic sea through the ice collision analysis, In order to achieve this goal, the standard procedure of the ice collision analysis is dealt with and example analysis was carried out and the results were considered. To investigate the validity of developed method, POLARIS system proposed by IMO was studied for comparison.

  • The high-frequency electro-mechanical signatures, which are excited and received by piezoelectric wafers mounted on a beam, are sensitive to incipient defect in a beam. Predicting the sensing range of the piezoelectric wafers is needed to effectively conduct damage assessment of a beam through utilizing their advantage. Damping of a beam plays the most important role in determining the sensing range among other features. This paper has proposed a scheme for estimating high-frequency damping of a beam through electro-mechanical signatures of piezoelectric wafers mounted on the beam. Considering damping effect while resonance of a beam evolves, wave perspective is adopted to formulate the electro-mechanical signatures of piezoelectric wafers. The damping of a beam is estimated through the least squares method minimizing the difference between the calculated and the measured damping ratio function values which are obtained from formulated and measured electro-mechanical signatures, respectively. The validity of the proposed scheme has been demonstrated through numerical and experimental examples using an aluminum beam with collocated piezoelectric wafers.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the position of a source in a closed form when a single source has coherently distributed property against a circular array. When a sound source reaches a sensor through multipath environments, it is seen as a distributed source and can be represented by four variables: the nominal azimuth, nominal elevation, azimuth angular spread, elevation angular spread. Therefore, it requires a lot of computation by a search method such as DSPE (Distributed Source Parameter Estimator). In this paper, we propose a method of estimating the nominal azimuth and elevation angle in a closed form using correlation function and least squares method for fast position estimation. In particular, if the source is assumed as Gaussian distribution model, the standard deviation is also estimated in a closed form. In the simulation, the validity of the proposed method is confirmed by comparing with the DSPE.

  • In this study, recharge rates are estimated using SWAT-K (a distributed hydrological model). The validity of the estimated recharge rates were evaluated by employing the baseflow separation method based on observed hydrological data. The exploitable groundwater is typically determined as the 10-year drought frequency recharge rate that is calculated by average recharge ratio multiplied by 10-year drought frequency precipitation. In practice, however, recharge rates typically decrease in line with precipitation; therefore, exploitable groundwater could be overestimated when average recharge rates are used without considering precipitation. To resolve this overestimation, exploitable groundwater was calculated by re-estimating recharge rates that consider precipitation intensity. By applying this method to the Uiwang, Gwacheon, and Seongnam sub-basins, the exploitable groundwater decreased by 55.5~77.6%, compared with recharge rates obtained using the existing method.

  • In this study, the purposes are investigating and analyzing car emission factors for estimating road emissions and the legal framework for the control of particulate matters. At the result, when input emission data are not realistic, the modeling output concentration distributions can lead to a serious distortion of the results. So, the spatial analysis of the dust emission vehicles have to be based on the actual traffic volumes. Because dust emission factors used in the car by National Institute of Environmental Research Method (2010) are mainly targeted for 2003-2007 cars these could not reflect the effect of DPF and the dust emission of gasoline passenger car. So, the real dust emission factors of diesel and gasoline cars need to be developed.

  • The objectives of this study were to develop a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Vietnamese female immigrants in Korea and to evaluate the validity of the FFQ. A total of 80 food items were selected in developing the FFQ according to consumption frequency, the contribution of energy and other nutrients, and the cooking methods based on one-day 24 hour recall (24HR) from 918 Vietnamese female immigrants between November 2006 and November 2007. The FFQ was validated by comparison with 24HR of 425 Vietnamese female immigrants between November 2008 and August 2009. The absolute nutrient intake calculated from the FFQ was higher than that estimated by 24HR for most nutrients. The correlation coefficients between 24HR and FFQ ranged from 0.10 (vitamin C) - 0.36 (energy) for crude intake, 0.05 (vitamin E) - 0.32 (calcium) for per 1000 kcal, and 0.08 (zinc) - 0.34 (calcium) for energy-adjusted, respectively. More than 70% of subjects were classified into the same or adjacent agreement groups for nutrients other than fiber, sodium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, while less than 10% of subjects were classified into complete disagreement groups. We conclude that the FFQ appears to be an acceptable tool for estimating nutrient intake and dietary patterns of Vietnamese female immigrants in Korea. Future studies to validate the FFQ using various biomarkers or other dietary assessment methods are needed.

  • The power simulator for a LEO satellite is a useful tool to analyze mission validity and energy balance for various mission scenarios by estimating power generation, power consumption, depth of discharge, bus voltage, charging/discharging current, etc. In this paper, it is described the calculation algorithm of the solar array (SA) power, the satellite load power and the battery modeling method to develop a satellite power simulation. To simulate the SA power generation, three different operation modes (DET, MPPT, CV) of SAR (Solar Array Regulator) are considered with a SA model. The satellite load power is estimated using the satellite unit power database, the unit on/off configuration at some satellite operation modes. The bus voltage and battery charging/discharging current at the specific DoD (Depth of Discharge) are calculated based on the battery characteristics. By this satellite power simulator, it can be conveniently analyzed the energy balance and the validity of a planned mission of a LEO satellite.

  • After the Ferry Sewol accident, public interest in marine safety has increased. However, as the marine leisure tourism population increases, the number of casualties caused by marine accidents is increasing, so marine safety education is urgently needed. Since facilities related to marine safety education in Korea are geographically biased to the west, regional imbalances in education are significant. Therefore, this study suggested solutions to the problems of developing educational contents and securing budgets and professionals by using idle facilities of the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology(KIMFT) located in Busan as a maritime safety education center. In addition, as a result of estimating demand using the gravity model, it was estimated that the demand would range from 150,000 to 130,000 per year. This study sufficiently proved social policy validity for policy suggestions using existing idle sites as maritime safety education centers based on objective verification methods and is expected to contribute substantially to policy promotion in the future.

  • A system architecture design relying only on the experience of its designer varies in quality in line with the designer's personal experience and knowledge ability. Likewise, a wrong estimation of hardware capacity ends up in waste of resources. In practice, a range of post-hoc monitoring tools are in operation, without providing any method for estimating and reflecting the performance at an early stage of architecture design. Provided capacity requirement is estimated in advance with simulation at the stage of design, the system capacity ends up in waste of resources. In practice, a range of post-hoc monitoring tools are in operation, without providing any method for estimating and reflecting the performance at an early stage of architecture design. Provided capacity requirement is estimated in advance with simulation at the stage of design, the system performance requirement can be met with a minimal cost while the waste of resources can be reduced to a great extent. In this context, the present study develops a pilot simulation model for hardware architecture design and then verifies its validity in an experiment. If the error rate falls within a permissible range in the experiment, the simulation model may be considered to reflect well the characteristics of real-life information system architecture.
