  • The objective of this study is to check into variation trends of design rainfall according to change of the number of years for observed data. To make comparative study of the relation between design rainfall and recorded year, this study was used maximum rainfall for 24-hr consecutive duration at Gangneung, Seoul, Incheon, Chupungnyeong, Pohang, Daegu, Jeonju, Ulsan, Gwangju, Busan, Mokpo and Yeosu rainfall stations. The tests for Independence, Homogeneity and detection of outliers were used Wald-Wolfowitz's test, Mann-Whitney's test and Grubbs and Beck test respectively. To select appopriate distribution, the distribution of genaralized pareto(GPA), generalized extreme value(GEV), generalized logistic(GLO), lognormal and pearson type 3 distribution is judged by L-moment ratio diagram and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Design rainfall was estimated by at-site frequency analysis using L-moments and Generalized extreme value(GEV) distribution according to change of the number of years for observed data. Through the comparative analysis for design rainfall induced by L-moments and GEV distribution, relationship between design rainfall and recorded year is provided.

  • The design flow of the urban strom drainage systems has been assessed largely on a basis of empirical relations between rainfall and runoff, and the rational formula has been widely used for the cities in our country. In order to estimate it more accurately, the urban runoff simulation model based on the RRl method has been developed and applied to the sample basin in this study. The rainfall hyetograph of the design stromfor the design flow has been obtained by the determination of the total rainfall and the temporal distributions of that rainfall. The total rainfall has been assessed from the empirical formula of rainfall intensity and the temporal distribution of that rainfall determined on the basis of Huff's method from the historical rainfall data of the basin. The virtual inflow hydrograph to each inlet of the basin has been constructed by computing the series of discharges in each time increment, using design strom hyetograph and time-area diagram. The actual runoff hydrograph at the basin outlet has been computed from the virtual inflow hydrographs by developing a relations between discharge and storage for the watershed. The discharge data for verification of the simulated runoff hydrograph are not available in the sample basin and so the sensitivity analysis of the simulation model has not been possible. The peak discharge for the design of drainage systems has been estimated from the computed runoff hydrograph at the basin outlet and compared to thatl obtained form the rational formula.

  • The movement of soil along a slope during rainfall can cause serious economic damage and can jeopardize human life. Accordingly, predicting slope stability during rainfall is a major issue in geotechnical engineering. Due to rainwater penetrating the soil, the negative pore water pressure will decrease, in turn causing a loss of shear strength in the soil and ultimately slope failure. More seriously, many constructions such as houses and transmission towers built in/on slopes are at risk when the slopes fail. In this study, the numerical simulation using 2D finite difference program, which can solve a fully coupled hydromechanical problems, was used to evaluate the effects of soil properties, rainfall conditions, and the location of a foundation on the slope instability and slope failure mechanisms during rainfall. A slope with a transmission tower located in Namyangju, South Korea was analyzed in this study. The results showed that the correlation between permeability and rainfall intensity had an important role in changing the pore water pressure via controlling the infiltrated rainwater. The foundation of the transmission tower was stable during rainfall because the slope failure was estimated to occur at the toe of the slope, and did not go through the foundation.

  • Recently, the flood damage by the localized heavy rainfall and typhoon have been frequently occurred due to the climate change. Accurate rainfall forecasting and flood runoff estimates are needed to reduce such damages. However, the uncertainties are involved in guage rainfall, radar rainfall, and the estimated runoff hydrograph from rainfall-runoff models. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the uncertainty of rainfall by generating a probabilistic radar rainfall ensemble and confirm the uncertainties of hydrological models through the analysis of the simulated runoffs from the models. The blending technique is used to estimate a single integrated or an optimal runoff hydrograph by the simulated runoffs from multi rainfall-runoff models. The radar ensemble is underestimated due to the influence of rainfall intensity and topography and the uncertainty of the rainfall ensemble is large. From the study, it will be helpful to estimate and predict the accurate runoff to prepare for the disaster caused by heavy rainfall.

  • Recently, the incidence of heavy rainfall is increasing. Therefore, a rainfall analysis should be performed considering increasing frequency. The current rainfall analysis for hydrologic design use the hourly rainfall data of ASOS with a density of 36 km on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, medium and small scale watershed included Thiessen network at the same rainfall point are analyzed with the same design rainfall and time distribution. This causes problem that the watershed characteristics can not be considered. In addition, there is a problem that the temporal-spatial change of the heavy rainfall occurring in the range of 10~20 km can not be considered. In this study, Author estimated design rainfall considering heavy rainfall using minutely rainfall data of AWS, which are relatively dense than ASOS. Also, author analyzed the time distribution and runoff of each case to estimate the huff's method suitable for the watershed. The research result will contribute to the estimation of the design hydrologic data considering the heavy rainfall and watershed characteristics.

  • The applicability of the parameter map of the Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (MBLRP) model for the Korean Peninsula was assessed from the perspective of flood prediction. The design rainfalls estimated from the MBLRP model were smaller than those from observed values by 5% to 40%, and the degree of underestimation of design rainfall increases with the increase of the recurrence interval of the design rainfall. The design floods at a virtual watershed estimated using the simulated rainfall time series based on MBLRP model were also smaller than those derived from the observed rainfall time series by 20% to 45%. The degree of underestimation of design flood increases with the increase of the recurrence interval of the design flood.

  • Stormwater wetland targeted to treat the rainfall runoff from cow feeding-lot basin has been monitored from May 2010 to November 2011. Reduction efficiency estimated based on 20 rainfall event monitoring was 88%, 54%, 70%, 31%, and 64% for TSS, BOD, $COD_{Cr}$, TN, and TP, respectively. Theoretically, as rainfall depth increases, hydraulic exchange ratio has to be increased. When the exchange ratio approaches to 1 (usually design goal), TSS reduction efficiency was estimated about 55%. Uncertainty in reduction efficiency of the stormwater wetland is normally very high due to the continuous rainfall activity, its magnitude and intensity, antecedent dry days, and other natural variables which can not be controlled by experiment conductors. In this study, predominant affecting variables was found to be hydraulics caused by consecutive rainfall events having different intensity and algal growth during dry days.

  • This study was conducted to identify the runoff characteristics of non-point source according to rainfall in Nam watershed. Land-uses of the Nam watershed were surveyed paddy field 4.5%, crop field 6.8%, mountainous 78.7%, urban 2.4%, and etc. 7.7%. Mean runoff coefficients in each area were observed Ⅰ area 0.08, Ⅱ area 0.08, and Ⅲ area 0.05. In the relationship between the rainfall and peak-flow, correlation coefficients(r) were investigated Ⅰ area -0.8609, Ⅱ area 0.6035, and Ⅲ area -0.4913. In the relationship between the antecedent dry period and first flow runoff, correlation coefficients(r) were investigated Ⅰ area -0.9093, Ⅱ area -0.1039, and Ⅲ area -0.7317. The discharge of pollutant concentrations relates to the flow rate of storm-water. In the relationship between the rainfall and watershed loading, exponent values of BOD, COD, SS, and T-N were estimated to 1.2751, 1.2003, 1.3744, and 1.1262, respectively.

  • In Korea, most landslides occurr during the rainy season and have shallow failure planes parallel to the slope. For these types of rainfall-induced failures, the most important factor triggering slope unstability is decrease in the matric suction of unsaturated soils with increasing saturation depth by rainfall infiltration. For this reason, estimation of cumulative infiltration has a significance. In this study, infiltration rate and cumulative infiltration are estimated by using both Mein & Larson model based on Green-Ampt infiltration model and using modified Mein & Larson model to which unsteady rainfall is applied. According to the results, the modified model is more reasonable than Mein & Larson method itself in estimation of infiltration rate and saturation depth because of considering real pending condition.
