  • Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) was used to characterize the intermolecular ester crosslinkages in cotton cellulose. The FT-IR data show that the band of the ester carbonyl group can be separated from overlapping carboxyl/carbonyl band by converting carboxyl group to carboxylate. When esterification occurs between a polycarboxylic acid and cotton cellulose, the carbonyl groups retained in the cotton exist in three forms; ester, carboxyl, and carboxylate anion. The FT-IR data were also correlated to the durable press rating result obtained. The appearance of BTCA-finished durable press silk/cotton fabrics were improved.

  • Pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC) in the presence of organic alkali of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) was applied to characterize the polyphenol fragments with a carbonyl group causing different magnitude of photo-yellowing in chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) papers. Two different origin of CTMP papers prepared from different individuals of Eucalyptus globulus trees showing high and low yellowing after photo-irradiation was compared before photo-irradiation. As a result, 7 peaks assigned to a series of phenol compounds with a carbonyl group, derived mainly from lignin, gave significant amount of phenol compounds with a carbonyl group for the paper sample of latent high yellowing, i.e., butoxy-and syringaldehyde, butoxy-and syringylacetone, butoxy-acetoguaiacone, butoxy-acetosyringone, butoxy-acetoethylsyringone, 3-methoxy-4-butoxy butyl ester, and 3,5-dimethoxy-4-butoxy butyl ester, using Py-GC/mass spectrometry (MS). The Py-GC method combined with TBAH successfully characterized polyphenol fragments with a carbonyl group causing differ high photo-yellowing in CTMP papers using a microgram order of samples.

  • 2-Aminobenzamide reacts with not only keton radical but also carbonyl group in carboxylic acid, to form easily -N-C-N-novel ring cyclization as a result I and V. In addition, it reacts with 1, 2-cyclohexadione or benzil, whitch are both 1, 2-diketone compounds, at the both ketone radical sites to give V or VII respectively. On the reaction with dimethone, however, which has 1, 3-diketone radical, it reacted with only one carbanyl group and VI was produced. We investigated the reaction with cr-ketoester such as ethyl pyruvate and diethyl rnesoxalate. In the reaction with ethylpyruvate, amine group in 2-aminobenzamide reacted not with ketone radical but carbonyl group in ester (product VIII). On the other hand, diethyl measoxalate reacted at the ketone radical site rather than the ester site (product IX).

  • We have performed Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies on blends of poly(vinyl phenol) (PVPh) with poly(n-alkylene 2,6-naphthalates) containing alkylene units of different lengths. The results indicate that each poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and poly(trimethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PTN) blend with PVPh is immiscible or partially miscible, but blends of poly(butylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PBN) with PVPh are miscible over the whole range of compositions in the amorphous state. FTIR spectroscopic analysis confirmed that significant degree of intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurs between the PBN ester carbonyl groups and the PVPh hydroxyl groups. The large difference in the degree of mixing in these blend systems is described in terms of the effect that chain mobility has on the accessibility of the ester carbonyl functional groups toward the hydroxyl groups of PVPh, which in turn impacts the miscibility of these blends.

  • Present work comprises of synthesis various analogues of ciprofloxacin by introducing new functionality at carboxylic group position via ester aminolysis reaction. For this purpose the carboxylic group at C-3 was esterified and later subjected to nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl carbon by various aromatic amines. Structure of the analogues was confirmed by different techniques i.e. IR, $^1H$ NMR and mass spectrometry. The antibacterial activity of the derivatives was also assessed with the parent against a series of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The synthesized compounds showed diverse antimicrobial profile among which most compounds possessed a comparable or better activity in comparison to the ciprofloxacin. Additionally unlike ciprofloxacin, some of the derivatives were also found to show antifungal activity.

  • The cobalt catalyzed carbonylation of bromobenzene having protected aldehyde group gives the corresponding ester in good yields, but 2-bromobenzaldehyde gives 3-alkoxyphthalide in the noticeable yield instead of alkyl 2-formylbenzoates.

  • Thermal and photoinduced silylallylation reactions of organic halides with 3-stannyl-2-(silylmethyl)propene are explored. Silylallylations occur in moderate to high yields, producing various functionalized allylsilane products in which halide carbon is bonded to the terminal alkenic carbon of allylsilane with the removal of tributyltin group. The reactions, which tolerate functional groups such as carbonyl, ester, nitrile, acetal, and ketal, hold synthetic potential for the construction of functionalized allylsilanes.

  • The relaxed torsional potential of a liquid crystalline polymer containing an ester functional group in a mesogenic unit (hereafter 12-4 oligomer) has been calculated with the ab initio self-consistent-field using 6-31G$^*$ basis set. GIAO^{13}C NMR chemical shifts also have been calculated at the B3LYP/6-31G$^*$ level of theory for each conformational structure obtained from torsional potential calculation. The results show that the phenyl ring-ester linkages are coplanar with the dihedral angle of about 0$^{\circ}$ and the ring-ring linkages in the biphenyl groups are tilted with the dihedral angle of around 43-44$^{\circ}$ in the lowest energy conformer. The biphenyl ring has a comparatively lower energy barrier of internal rotation potential in the ring-ring than that of phenyl ring-ester. The ^{13}C chemical shifts of carbonyl carbons were found to move to upfield due to $\pi$ -conjugation with phenyl ring and slightly affected about 0.5 ppm by dihedral angle of the ring-ring linkage.

  • Conformational free energy calculations using an empirical potential function (ECEPP/2) and the hydration shell model were carried out on the sulfonylurea herbicides of bensulfuron methyl (Londax) and metsulfuron methyl (Ally). The conformational energy was minimized from starting conformations which included possible combinations of torsion angles in the molecule. The conformational entropy of each conformation was computed using a harmonic approximation. To understand the hydration effect on the conformation of the molecule in aqueous solution, the hydration free energy of each group was calculated and compared each other. It was found that the low-free-energy conformations of two molecules in aqueous solution prefer the overall folded structure, in which an interaction between the carbonyl group of ester in aryl ring and the first amido group of urea bridge plays an important role. From the analysis of total free energy, the hydration and conformational entropy are known to be essential in stabilizing low-free-energy conformations of Londax, whereas the conformational energy is proved to be a major contribution to the total free energy of low-free-energy conformations of Ally.
