Chemical profiles and biological activities of essential oil of Citrus hystrix DC. peels

  • Essential oil (EO) was extracted from the peel of Citrus hystrix DC. originating from Tinh Bien, An Giang province (Vietnam), using steam distillation. The study aimed to determine some physicochemical properties of Citrus hystrix peel EO (ChpEO), including the acid value (AV), saponification value (SV), ester value (EV), density, specific gravity, and freezing point. The chemical composition was also analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Compounds like β-pinene (30.19%), D-limonene (22.15%), and sabinene (21.37%), with antioxidant and antibacterial properties, had a relatively high content. The EO was also capable of inhibiting the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC 13311), and Bacillus cereus (ATCC 11778) specifically.

The Comparison of Main Volatile Components in the Flue-cured Tobacco Produced by Five Countries. (세계 5개국에서 생산된 황색종 잎담배의 주요 향기성분 비교)

  • The present study was carried out to compare the composition of major essential oil components in the flue-cured tobacco produced by Korea, America, China, Brazil and Zimbabwe. Above 100 essential oil components were separated by GC and major 18 components of them, known to be important contributors to flue-cured tobacco flavor and smoke taste, were identified by GC/MS. Neophytadiene was major in quantities in the oils mostly and its composition in flue-cured tobacco produced by Korea, America, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Unnam and Yenji region of China was 26.82\%,\;25.17\%,\;26.50\%,\;16.92\%,\;and\;18.75\%\;and\;14.87\%$, respectively. Megastigmatrienone, one of the major tobacco carotenoid degradation products was contained above $10\%$ in the oils of flue-cured tobacco produced by Korea and America, but, it was comprised about $5.66\%$ to 8.00 in Brazil, Zimbabwe, and Unnam and Yenji region of China. Damascenone is important to the aroma of tobacco as a crotenoid degradation products. Its amount in the oils was $3.31\%\;in\;Brazil,\;3.13\%\;in\;America,\;2.57\%\;in\;Zimbabwe,\;2.54%$ in Yenji of China, $2.00\%$ in Korea and $1.85\%$ in Unnam of China. These results can furnish the basic information capable of evaluating the quality value of flue-cured tobacco produced by various nations.

  • The composition of essential oils isolated from the aerial parts of Artemisia iwayomogi Kitamura and Artemisia capillaris Thunberg collected from two diffenent cultivation area, respectively, was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Sixty components were identified in oils from A. iwayomogi. The major components of A. iwayomogi oil collected from one area (Sample A) were iso-pinocamphone (31.64%), 1,8-cineo1e (21.55%), ${\beta}-pinene$ (4.46%), pinocarvone (3.72%), myrtenal (3.42%) and trans-pinocarve1 (3.14%), and the major components of the oil from the other area (Sample B) were camphor (26.99%), 1,8-cineo1e (21.55%), ${\alpha}-terpineol$ (7.63%), borneol (4.10%), camphene (3.97%) and artemisia ketone (3.84%). Eighty components were identified in oils from A. capillaris. The major components were capillene $(26.01{\sim}30.31%)$, ${\beta}-pinene(8.55{\sim}18.38%)$, ${\beta}-caryophyllene(8.80{\sim}13.70%)$, ${\beta}-himachalene(1.67{\sim}5.57%)$, $cis,trans- {\alpha}-farnesene(2.10{\sim}7.38%)$ and germacrene D $(2.27{\sim}5.46%)$ and there was no difference in oil composition of A. capillaris between two cultivation area.

  • The ether extract of the dried powdered roots of Korean ginseng was fractionated by column chromatography. Limonene, terpineol, eucalyptol, ${\alpha}$-phellanderene and citral were identified in the essential oil fraction of the ether extract by TLC and GLC.

  • This investigation on the composition of fatty acids of hempseed through gas -chromatography analysis found the follwing results. Myristic acid and other ten materials were detected. And there was mainly composed of myristic acid 29.4%, Palmitoleic acid 16.2%, linoleic acid 14.9%, oleic acid 12.4%. It also showed that heptadecanoic acid 10.8%, erucic acid 0.5%, docosahexaenoic acid 0.3% and essential fatty acid were contained 11.9% between them. As stearic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid and arachidonic acid made lower cholesterol level in body, they will help prevention of senile disease with the oil d hemp seed.

Effect of Different Vegetable Oils on Growth and Fatty Acid Profile of Rohu (Labeo rohita, Hamilton); Evaluation of a Return Fish Oil Diet to Restore Human Cardio-protective Fatty Acids

  • Two experiments in the sequential order were conducted to determine the effects of different dietary lipid sources on the growth and fatty acid composition of rohu (Labeo rohita) and to examine the viability of a return fish oil finisher diet in restoring the human cardio-protective fatty acid profile. In the first experiment, fish were fed either with coconut oil (D1), olive oil (D2), sunflower oil (D3), linseed oil (D4) and fish oil (D5) as the main lipid source in the isonitrogenous diet for 90 days. No significant differences in growth were observed. Among the experimental diets moisture content of fish varied significantly (p<0.05) between the groups. Dietary lipid sources had a profound influence on the fatty acid profile of the muscle and liver as tissue fatty acid profile reflected the dietary fatty acid composition. Increased amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid were observed in tissue of fish fed D4 and arachidonic acid was observed in the tissue of fish fed D3. We have also detected the metabolites of n-3 and n-6 pathway in D4 and D3 groups respectively, which prompted us to conclude that rohu, can desaturate and elongate $C_{18}$ essential fatty acids to $C_{20}$ and $C_{22}$ HUFA. A second feeding trial was conducted using the animals from the five different treatment groups for the duration of 30 days with fish oil rich diet (D5). Feeding with fish-oil rich washout diet resulted in the near equalization of all the other treatment groups tissue fatty acid profiles to that of fish oil (D5) fed group. These results indicate that a finishing fish oil diet can be effectively used to restore the human cardioprotective fatty acid profile in rohu fed with vegetable oils as lipid source.

  • This paper was developed for production of the humanized milk, comprising similarly to the composition and characteristic of human milk. Humanized milk of superior quality can be made directly from the fresh raw milk mixed vegetable oil, corn syrup, whey powder, ${\beta}-lactose$, sugar, vitamin, ${\beta}-carotene$ and minerals showing formulation of the humanized milk at table 2. The improving effects of adding vegetable oil and corn syrup are both more reformed the chemical and physical properties of humanized milk. The former enhanced the essential fatty acid and energy source in this product, the latter has the most solving function in water and induced amount of emulsion and stabilizer. The products contain about 13% protein, 23% fat, 58.3% carbohydrate, 2% ash and ensue reasonably balance of essential amino acid, poly-unsaturated fatty acid for the requirement of infants and controlled component of the humanized milk such as human milk.

  • The essential oil was obtained from the aerial part of Rhododendon mucronulatum Turcz. var. ciliatum Nakai by steam distillation, samples were collected by headspace (HS) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) methods, and the compositions of the oil were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Nineteen constituents were identified from the essential oil: 15 carbohydrates, 3 alcohols, and 1 acetates. Major constituents were 2-${\beta}$-pinene (16.1%), camphene (11.9%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (11.4%), d,l-limonene (9.5%), and ${\gamma}$-terpinene (9.5%). By SPME extraction, seventeen constituents were identified: 13 hydrocarbons, 1 alcohol, 1 nitrogen-containing compound, 1 acetate, and 1 amine. Major constituents of the SPME-extracted sample were cam phene (19.6%), 2-${\beta}$-pinene (18.0%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (17.4%), trimethyl hydrazine (9.7%), ${\gamma}$-terpinene (8.5%), and d,l-limonene (5.5%). By HS extraction, thirteen constituents were identified: 11 hydrocarbons, 1 alcohol, and 1 nitrogen-containing compound. Major constituents of the HS-extracted sample were camphene (25.8%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (24.8%), 2-${\beta}$-pinene (20.2%), d,l-limonene (5.4%), tricyclene (5.1%) and trimethyl hydrazine (4.6%). The fragrance of the essential oil was coniferous, balsamic, and woody, and the $IC_{50}$ value of the essential oil was 0.030 ${\mu}g/mg$ in MTT assay using UaCaT keratinocyte cell line.
