The development of methods for the identification of irradiated foods helps enforce national and international regulations on labelling to ensure the consumer's free choice to buy irradiated or unirradiated foods. and the availabilityof such methods may assist the promotion of international trade in irradiated food products and help prevent abuse of the technology. A number of approaches to determine the physical , chemical, microbiological and biological changes that occur in foods treated with ionizing radiation have been studied. However no single method is universally applicable. Among physical measurements, the leading methods of indentification are electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and thermoluminescence(TL). ESR is an established non-destructive method for the analysis of free radicals from their traps and TL is the emission of light from irradiated mineral extracts by heating. Viscosity of carbohydrate polymers by causing chain breaks by irradiation, measuring the impedance of potatoes and detection of gases produced radiolytically are promising techniques for identification purposes. Irradiated water-containing foods show significant supercooling when monitored with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), which can be applied to identifying irradiated ones.
Objectives: Correlations of the levels of the nonspecific inflammatory markers C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and of the coagulation marker fibrinogen with the treatment period of wheel balanced cancer therapy were determined. Methods: Electronic charts of stage IV cancer patients hospitalized from February 1, 2008, to November 30, 2013, were reviewed retrospectively. Patients whose laboratory follow-up tests included at least two data points for at least one marker were included. Patients receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy or having Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) levels exceeding 2 were excluded. Correlations of the markers with the length of treatment for treatment periods ${\geq}21$ and ${\leq}20$ days were determined by gender and whether or not surgery had been performed. Results: Analyses of the CRP and the ESR revealed a higher proportion of patients with stable marker levels than with increased or decreased levels. Also, only the ESR in female and the CRP in male groups had higher proportions of patients with stable marker levels than with increased or decreased levels. The ${\geq}21$ day group had a higher proportion of patients with stable CRP and ESR levels than the ${\leq}20$ days group. Only the ESR in female and the CRP in male groups had higher proportions of patients with stable marker levels in the ${\geq}21$ day than in the ${\leq}20$ day group. In addition, only the CRP in the surgery group and the ESR in the non-surgery group had higher proportions of patients with stable marker levels in the ${\geq}21$ day group than in the ${\leq}20$ day group. Conclusion: For stage IV cancer patients at hospitals that offer Korean medicine, more than 21 days of long-term wheel balanced cancer therapy (WBCT) should help maintain the CRP and the ESR levels and should have a favorable effect on the survival rate.
A solid-state reaction of $V_2O_5$ with AlMCM-41 followed by calcinations generated $V^{5+}$ species in the mesoporous materials. Dehydration results in the formation of a vanadyl species, $VO^{2+}$, that can be characterized by electron spin resonance (ESR). The chemical environment of the vanadium centers in V-AlMCM-41 was investigated by XRD, EDX, diffuse reflectance UV-VIS, ESR, $^{29}Si,\;^{27}Al,\;and\;^{51}V$ NMR. It was found that the vanadium species on the wall surface and inside the wall of the hexagonal tubular wall of the V-AlMCM-41 were completely oxidized to tetrahedral $V^{5+}$ and transformed to square pyramidal by additional coordination to water molecules upon hydration. The oxidized $V^{5+}$ species on the wall surfaces and inside the wall were also reversibly reduced to $VO^{2+}$ species or lower valences by thermal process.

Molecular spintronics has attracted attentions, which combines molecular electronics with the spin degree of freedom in electron transport. Among various molecules as candidates of the molecular spintronics, single molecule magnet (SMM) is one of the most promising material. SMM molecules show a ferromagnetic behavior even as a single molecule and hold the spin information even after the magnetic field is turned off. Here in this report, we show the spin behavior of SMM molecules adsorbed on the Au surface by combining the observation of Kondo peak in the STS and ESR-STM measurement. Kondo resonance state is formed near the Fermi level when degenerated spin state interacts with conduction electrons. ESR-STM detects the Larmor frequency of the spin in the presence of a magnet field. The sample include $MPc_2$ and $M_2Pc_3$ molecules ($M\;=\;Tb^{3+}$, $Dy^{3+}$, and $Y^{3+}$ Pc=phthalocyanine) whose critical temperature as a ferromagnet reaches 40 K. A clear Kondo peak was observed which is originated from an unpaired electron in the ligand of the molecule, which is the first demonstration of the Kondo peak originated from electron observed in the STS measurement. We also observed corresponding peaks in ESR-STM spectra. [1] In addition we found that the Kondo peak intensity shows a clear variation with the conformational change of the molecule; namely the azimuthal rotational angle of the Pc planes. This indicates that the Kondo resonance is correlated with the molecule electronic state. We examined this phenomena by using STM manipulation technique, where pulse bias application can rotate the relative azimuthal angle of the Pc planes. The result indicates that an application of ~1V pulse to the bias voltage can rotate the Pc plane and the Kondo peaks shows a clear variation in intensity by the molecule's conformational change.

It is very difficult to detect irradiated South Sea cultured pearls (SSCPs) at a low dose by gemological methods (e.g. optical transmission method, microscopic examination, UV fluorescence reaction, and so on). In this study, however, it was possible to distinguish between irradiated SSCPs from un-irradiated SSCPs by ESR analysis. We have analyzed the pearl nacre and nucleus by separating them for the purposed of providing information about the change of $CO^-_2$ radical as growing absorbed doses. And it was found out that the signal of $CO^-_2$ radical of the nacre is more distinct than the nucleus.
Fresh (raw roots), white (dried), and red (steamed-drid) ginseng samples were gamma-irradiated at 0 to 7 kGy. Electron spin resonance (ESR) technique was used to characterize the irradiation status of the samples, targeting the radiation-induced cellulose radicals after different sample pretreatments. All non-irradiated samples exhibited a single central signal (g=2.006), whose intensity showed significant increase upon irradiation. The ESR spectra from the radiation-induced cellulose radicals, with two side peaks (g=2.0201 and g=1.9851) equally spaced (${\pm}3mT$) from the central signal, were also observed in the irradiated samples. The core sample analyzed after alcoholic-extraction produced the best results for irradiated fresh ginseng samples. In the case of irradiated white and red ginseng samples, the central (natural) and radiation-induced (two-side peaks corresponding to cellulose radical) signal intensities showed little improvement on alcoholic-extraction. The water-washing step minimized the effect of $Mn^{2+}$, but reduced the intensity of side peaks making them difficult to indentify. The effect of different origins was negligible, however harvesting year showed a clear effect on radiation-induced ESR signals.
In this study, we investigated the applicability of the photostimulated luminescence (PSL), thermoluminescence (TL), electron spin resonance (ESR) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods for 5 seeds which are not allowed to be irradiated in Korea. All 5 seeds including evening primrose seed, safflower seed, rape seed, sunflower seed and flax seed were analyzed. Samples were irradiated at 1~10 kGy using a $^{60}Co$ gamma-ray irradiator. In PSL study, the photon counts of all the unirradiated samples showed negative (lower than 700). The photon counts of irradiated (1, 5, 10 kGy) samples showed positive (higher than 5,000). In TL analysis, results showed that it is possible to apply TL method to all foods containing minerals. In ESR measurements, the ESR signal (single-line) intensity of irradiated foods was higher than non-irradiated foods. The hydrocarbons 1,7-hexadecadiene ($C_{16:2}$) and 8-heptadecene ($C_{17:1}$) from oleic acid were detected only in the irradiated samples before and after the treatment at doses ${\geq}$ 1 kGy, but they were not detected in non-irradiated samples before and after treatment. These two hydrocarbons could be used as markers to identify irradiated safflower seed, rape seed, Sunflower seed and flax seed. And then, the hydrocarbons 1,7,10-hexadecatriene ($C_{16:3}$) and 6,9-heptadecadiene ($C_{17:2}$) from linoleic acid were detected in the evening primrose seed, safflower seed and sunflower seed. According to the results, PSL, TL and GC/MS methods were successfully applied to detect the irradiated foods. It is concluded that PSL, TL and GC/MS methods are suitable for detection of irradiated samples and a combined method is recommendable for enhancing the reliability of detection results.

In this paper we introduce a new escalator(ESC) structure-based adaptation algorithm. The proposed algorithm is independent of eigenvalues spread ratio(ESR) of channel and has faster convergence speed than that of the conventional ESC algorithms. This algorithm combines the fast adaptation ability of least square methods and the orthogonalization property of the ESC structure. From the simulation results the proposed algorithm shows superior convergence speed and no slowing down of convergence speed when we increase the ESR of the channel.
The finding of long lived free radicals produced by ionizing radiation in organic crystals and the quantification of this effect by electron spin resonance(ESR) spactroscopy has proven excellent dosimetric applicability. The tissue equivalent alanine dosimeter also appear appropriate for radiation therapy level dosimetry. The dose measurement was performed in a Rando phantom using high energy photons as produced by high energy medical linear accelerator and cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. The absorbed dose range of the ESR/alanine dosimetry system could be extended down to 0.1 Gy. The response of the alanine dosimeters was determined for photons at different therapeutic dose levels from less than 0.1 Gy to 100 Gy and the depth dose measurements were carried out for photon energies of 1.25MeV, 6 and 10 MV with alanine dosimeters in Rando phantom. Comparisons between ESR/alanine in a Rando phantom and ion chamber in a water phantom were made performing depth dose measurements to examine the agreement of both methods under field conditions.

Purpose : It is difficult to make a distinction between lower urinary tract infection(UTI) and acute pyelonephritis(APN) during the acute phase of febrile UTI due to nonspecific clinical symptoms and laboratory findings, especially among young children. We measured the serum procalcitonin(PCT) in children with UTI to distinguish between acute pyelonephritis and lower UTI, and to determine the accuracy of PCT measurement compared with other inflammatory markers. Methods : Serum samples were taken from children who admitted with unexplained fever or were suspected of having UTI. 51 children(mean $12.2{\pm}11.4$ months) were enrolled in this study. Leukocyte counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rates(ESR) and C-reactive protein(CRP) were also measured. Renal parenchymal involvement was assessed by $^{99m}Tc$ DMSA scintigraphy in the first 7 days after admission. PCT was measured by immunoluminometric assay. Results : PCT values were significantly correlated with the presence of renal defects in children with UTI(n=16)($5.06{\pm}12.97{\mu}g/L$, P<0.05). However, PCT values were not significantly different between children with UTI without renal damage(n=18) and children without UTI(n=17). Using a cutoff of $0.5{\mu}g/L$ for PCT and 20 mm/hr for ESR, 20 mg/L for CRP, sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing between UTI with and without renal involvement were 81.3 percent and 88.9 percent for PCT 87.5 percent and 72.2 percent for ESR, and 87.5 percent and 55.6 percent for CRP, respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were 86.7 percent and 84.2 percent for PCT and 60.9 percent and 81.8 percent for CRP, respectively. Conclusion : In febrile UTI, PCT values were more specific than CRP, ESR and leukocyte count for the identification of patients who might develop renal defects.
