  • The fatigue load of a turbine blade has become more important because the size of commercial wind turbines has increased dramatically in the past 30 years. The reduction of the fatigue load can result in an increase in operational efficiency. This paper numerically investigates the load reduction of large wind turbine blades using active aerodynamic load control devices, namely trailing edge flaps. The PD and LQG controllers are used to determine the trailing edge flap angle; the difference between the root bending moment and its mean value during turbulent wind conditions is used as the error signal of the controllers. By numerically analyzing the effect of the trailing edge flaps on the wind turbines, a reduction of 30-50% in the standard deviation of the root bending moment was achieved. This result implies a reduction in the fatigue damage on the wind turbines, which allows the turbine blade lengths to be increased without exceeding the designed fatigue damage limit.

  • To improve the performance of PID controller of high order systems by model reduction, we proposed two model reduction methods. One, Original model with two point $({\angle}G(jw)=\;-{\pi}/2,\;-{\pi})$ in Nyquist curve used gradient base method and genetic algorithm. The other, Original model without two point$({\angle}G(jw)=\;-{\pi}/2,\;-{\pi})$in Nyquist curve used to add very small dead time. This method has annexed very small dead time on the base model for reduction, and we remove it after getting the reduced model, and , we improved Smith-predictor for a dead-time compensator using genetic algorithms. This method considered four points$({\angle}G(jw)=0,\;-\pi/2,\;-\pi,\;-3\pi/2)$ in the Nyquist curve to reduce steady state error between original and reduced model. It is shown that the proposed methods have more performance than the conventional method.

  • This paper deals with a balanced model reduction for uncertain nonlinear systems via T-S fuzzy approach. We define a generalized controllability/observability gramian and obtain a balanced state space model using generalized gramians which can be obtained from solutions of linear matrix inequalities. We present a balanced model reduction scheme by truncating not only state variables but also uncertain elements. An upper bound of the model reduction error will also be suggested. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of our method, a numerical example will be presented.

  • Performance of a force-torque sensor is affected significantly by an error signal that is included in the sensor signal. The error sources may be classified mainly into two categories: one is a structural error due to inaccuracy of sensor body, and the other is a noise signal existing in sensed information. This paper presents a principle of 6-axis force-torque sensor briefly, a double-hole structure to be able to improve a structural error, and then a signal conditioning to reduce the effect of a noise signal. The validity of the proposed method is investigated through experimental study, which shows that SIN ratio is improved significantly in our experimental setup, and the sensor can be implemented cheaply with reasonable performance.

  • Development of a high speed feed drive system has been a major issue for the past few decades in machine tool industries. The reduction of tool change time as well as repid travel time can enhance the productivity. However, the high speed feed drive system generates more heat in nature, which leads to thermal expansion that has adverse effects on the accuracy of machined part. The paper divides the feed drive system into the ball screw and guide way. For each part, the thermal behvior model is separtately developed to estimate the position error of the respective feed drive system that is caused by the thermal expansion. The modified lumped capacitance method is used to analyze the linear position error of the ball screw. The thermal deformation of guide way parts affects the straightness and angular error as well as linear position error. Finite element method is used to estimate the thermal behavior of these guide way parts. The effectiveness of the proposed models are verified through the experiments using laser interferometer.

  • This paper deals with the reduction of trajectory tracking error by changing the initial postures of a biped robot. Gait of a biped robot depends on the constraints of mechanical kinematics and the initial states including the posture. Also the dynamic walking stability in a biped robot system is analyzed by zero moment point(ZMP) among the stabilization indices. Path trajectory, in which knee joint is bent forward like human's cases, is applied to most cases considered with above conditions. A new initial posture, which is similar to bird's gait, is proposed to decrease trajectory tracking error and it is verified through real experimental results.

  • A total of 77 cases was identified to have human errors from a total of 255 trips occurred from 1978 to 1992 in Korean NPPs. The cases were analyzed to investigate how many human errors occurred on which work conditions to find out the areas of high priority for human error reduction. For the analysis of the 77 trip cases due to human errors, classifications were made for the following four categories ; plant systems, work situation, job types, and error types. Erroneous tasks critically influencing the plant trips were carefully identified and analyzed according to the classifications. Based on the results for the individual cases, the cases were counted for the classification items in each of the four categories, then also for the group of categories to investigate the relationships among the categories in aspects of human error occurrences. As results, the plant systems, work situations, and job types, and error types that are dominant in human errors related to the trips ore identified.

  • This study is to define a congitive paradigm including a new model of common cause human behavior error domain and to analyze their causal factors and their properties of common cause human error characteristics in software engineering. A laboratory study was performed to analyze the common causes of human behavior domain error in software development and to identify software design factors contributing to the common cause effects in common cause failure redundancy. The results and analytical paradigm developed in this research can be applied to reliabbility improvement and cost reduction in software development for many applications. Results are also expected to provide training guidelines for software engineers and for more effective design of ultra-high reliable software packages.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to reduce the target estimation error of the measurement angle, especially applied to the medium and long range surveillance radar. If the target has no maneuver and no change in heading direction for a certain time interval, the predicted angle of interacting multiple model(IMM) from the previous track information can be used to reduce the angle estimation error. The proposed method is simulated in 2 scenarios, a scenario with a non-maneuvering target and a scenario with a maneuvering target. The result shows that the new fusion solution(weighted IMM) with the predicted azimuth and the measured azimuth is worked properly in the two scenarios.
