  • The error performance of BPSK and QPSK signals in mobile satellite channel is investigated considering nonlinearity of TWTA (Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier) in the presence of AWGN(Additive White Gaussian Noise) on the uplink and downlink paths. It is assumed that the fading on the downlink path forms a Rician distribution. The Rician distribution is approximated by discrete probability values. The values are firstly found by Classical Moment Technique. Finally, the error probability is evaluated using approximate discrete values of Rician distribution and the Gaussian Quadrature Formula.

  • In this letter, we investigate the performance of coherent free-space optical(FSO) systems under pulsed noise jamming conditions. In particular, we derive the average bit error probability of the coherent FSO systems with the pulsed noise jamming in a closed-form. Also, we derive the optimal fraction of symbol time of the jammer. We confirm the derived average error probability expressions by the exactly matching Monte-Carlo simulation results.

  • In this paper, a non-classical autocorrelation detector adopting a newly defined test statistic is introduced to solve the typical problem of detecting a narrowband signal transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Error probability analyses are performed for a noncoherent frequency-shift-keying (FSK) system employing the proposed test-statistic. Through the histogram approach, the probability density functions of the test-statistics are plotted to explain the analysis model. All numerical results obtained indicate the limited improvement in error performance under the lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the use of higher number of samples per bit will finally provide the almost same confident potential of improvement in error rate as the system using matched filters (MFs) gives.

  • In this paper, a slotted CDMA_ALOHA protocol with hybrid ARQ is proposed for the wireless CDMA communication networks. The proposed protocol combines the characteristics of the slotted ALOHA, CDMA, and the hybrid ARQ, in order to increase the throughput by reducing the number of retransmissions when the channel experiences heavy traffic. The main feature of the proposed protocol is the utilization of the forward error correction capability to correct errors that appear after the CDMA dispreading of the packets. The base station does not need to ask so often for retransmission of erroneous packets. It will request for retransmission only when the FEC capability is exceeded. The performance of the proposed protocol is analyzed by considering the packet collision probability as well as the bit error probability. The numerical results show that the system throughput is closely related to the bit error rate of the wireless link and the FEC coding rate.

  • Two-dimensional optical code-division multiple access is a system to transmit a two- dimensional data via parallel transmission line. The probability density function (pdf) of interference noise from other users is calculated and the pdf of asynchronous interference noise is newly calculated to present lower bounds of probability of error. The corresponding bit error rate is evaluated from this results.

  • Image and video compression requires quantization error model of DCT coefficients for post processing, restoration or transcoding. Once DCT coefficients are quantized, it is impossible to recover the original distribution. We assume that the original probability density function (pdf) is the Laplacian function. We calculate the variance of the quantized variable, and estimate the variance of the DCT coefficients. We can confirm that the proposed method enhances the accuracy of the quantization error estimation.

  • The contribution of degraded human performance (e.g., human errors) is significant for the safety of diverse social-technical systems. Therefore, it is crucial to understand when and why the performance of human operators could be degraded. In this study, the occurrence probability of human errors was empirically estimated based on the complexity of proceduralized tasks. To this end, Logistic regression analysis was conducted to correlate TACOM (Task Complexity) scores with human errors collected from the full-scope training simulator of nuclear power plants equipped with analog devices (analog environment). As a result, it was observed that the occurrence probability of both errors of commission and errors of omission can be soundly estimated by TACOM scores. Since the effect of diverse performance influencing factors on the occurrence probabilities of human errors could be soundly distinguished by TACOM scores, it is also expected that TACOM scores can be used as a tool to explain when and why the performance of human operators starts to be degraded.

  • A general method for the evaluation of the symbol error probability (SER) of ultra wideband (UWB) systems with various kind of modulation schemes (N-PAM, M-PPM, Bi-Orthogonal), in presence of multipath channel, multiuser and strong narrowband interference, is presented. This method is shown to be able to include all the principal multiaccess techniques proposed so far for UWB, time hopping (TH), direct sequence (DS) and optical orthogonal codes (OOC). A comparison between the performance of these multiple access and modulation techniques is given, for both ideal Rake receiver and minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. It is shown that for all the analyzed multiple access schemes, a Rake receiver exhibits a high error floor in presence of narrowband interference (NBI) and that the value of the error floor is in-fluenced by the spectral characteristics of the spreading code. As expected, an MMSE receiver offers better performance, representing a promising candidate for UWB systems. When the multiuser interference is dominant, all multiple access techniques exhibit similar performance under high-load conditions. If the number of users is significantly lower than the spreading factor, then DS outperforms both TH and OOC. Finally 2PPM is shown to offer better performance than the other modulation schemes in presence of multiuser interference; increasing the spreading factor is proposed as a more effective strategy for SER reduction than the use of time diversity.

  • In this paper, we propose the heuristic signal grouping algorithm to estimate channel state value over full blind communication situation which means that there is no information about the modulation scheme and the channel state information between the transmitter and the receiver. Hereafter, using the constellation rotation method and the probability density function(pdf) the modulation scheme is determined to perform automatic modulation classification(AMC). Furthermore, the modulation type and a channel state value estimation capability is evaluated by comparing the proposed scheme with other conventional techniques from the simulation results in terms of the symbol error rate(SER) and the root mean square error (RMSE).
