낙동강 하구 주요 연안사주에서 표층표사의 시.공간적 변화 (Spatiotemporal Variations of Coastal Sediment Transport at Barrier Islands in the Nakdong River Estuary)

  • 본 연구에서는 낙동강 하구 삼각주 지형의 형성 및 발달에 관한 기초적 현장조사 연구로서 사주 퇴적의 원인물질인 해안 표층표사의 퇴적속도를 정량적으로 평가하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 연안사주 중 진우도 및 도요등 전면해역의 사주퇴적현상이 급격하게 발생하는 해안선 지역에 표층 표사의 거동 분석을 위한 현장관측실험구를 설치하고 약 1년간 약 1개월 간격으로 지반고를 측정하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. 얻어진 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1) 관측기간동안의 일별 침식 퇴적속도 계산 결과, 진우도(St. 1)에서의 침식 퇴적속도는 -1.39~3.56cm/day이며, 도요등(St. 2)의 경우에는 -4.0~3.07cm/day이었다. (2) 관측기간동안 2회의 태풍 내습에도 침식 및 퇴적량이 그리 크게 나타나지 않는 반면에 태풍내습후 10월경에 최대 표사이동량이 나타났다.

Investigation of bar parameters occurred by cross-shore sediment transport

  • Cross-shore sediment transport is very important factor in the design of coastal structures, and the beach profile is mainly affected by a number of parameters, such as wave height and period, beach slope, and the material properties of the bed. In this study cross-shore sediment movement was investigated using a physical model and various offshore bar geometric parameters were determined by the resultant erosion profile. The experiments on cross- shore sediment transport carried out in a laboratory wave channel for initial base slopes of 1/8, 1/10 and 1/15. Using the regular waves with different deep-water wave steepness generated by a pedal-type wave generator, the geometrical of sediment transport rate and considerable characteristics of beach profiles under storm conditions and bar parameters affecting on-off shore sediment transport are investigated for the beach materials with the medium diameter of $d_{50}$=0.25, 0.32, 0.45, 0.62 and 0.80 mm. Non-dimensional equations were obtained by using linear and non-linear regression methods through the experimental data and were compared with previously developed equations in the literature. The results have shown that the experimental data fitted well to the proposed equations with respect to the previously developed equations.

파-흐름 공존장에서 부유사와 소류사 flux에 의한 지형변화모델 (A Bed Level Change Model(SED-FLUX) by Suspended Sediment Flux and Bed Load Flux in Wave-Current Co-existing Fields)

  • 저면경계층에서 부유사와 소류사 flux를 포함하는 실제적인 표사이동에 기초한 지형변화모델(SED-FLUX)이 개발되었다. SED-FLUX는 파랑모듈, 동수역학 모듈 및 부유사농도, 순부상 flux($Q_s$)와 소류사 flux를 계산하는 표사수송 및 확산모듈을 포함하며, 소류사 flux는 파-흐름 공존장에서 검증된 van Rijn의 TRANSPOR 프로그램에 의해 평가되어진다. 저면에서 순부상 flux $Q_s$는 표사확산모듈에서 source/sink 항으로서 평가되어지며, 수심변화모듈은 수심변화량을 계산하고 시간에 따른 bed level의 변화를 계산한다. 모델의 검증을 위하여 소류사이동의 이동한계수심은 방사성 동위원소 추적자를 사용한 현장 실험자료와 파와 흐름에 의한 표사이동한계수심에 대한 몇몇 경험식과 비교되었다. 본 모델을 파에 의한 해빈 단면변화에 적용한 결과 입사파의 특성에 따른 명확한 침식과 퇴적분포를 나타내었다. 끝으로, 이안제 배후에서 파와 해빈류에 의한 수심변화를 계산한 결과 이안제의 배후에서 초기 tombolo의 형성을 보여주었다.

목포해역의 점착성 퇴적물 이동에 관한 2차원 수치모의 (A Two-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Cohesive Sediment Transport in the Mokpo Coastal Zone)

  • 연안 해역은 해안구조물 건설과 간척 등의 연안 개발로 인해 해안의 퇴적환경이 크게 변화하고 있으며, 이로 인하여 많은 환경변화가 발생하였다. 특히 점착성 퇴적물은 오염물질을 흡착하고 이동하여 환경적으로 큰 변화를 야기한다. 목포해역은 최근에 많은 해안구조물의 건설로 인해 낙조우세가 점점 심해지는 등의 환경변화가 발생하고 있는 지역이다. 이 지역의 점착성 퇴적물을 채취하여 수리실험하고 얻은 침식률 및 침식한계전단응력의 퇴적물 이동모의 활용가능성에 대해 검토하였다. 부유사 농도에 대한 모의 결과는 관측자료와 일치하는 양호한 결과를 보였다. 따라서 수리실험을 통해 결정된 침식률을 사용하는 것이 수치모의에서 정확성을 개선하는 데 기여함을 확인할 수 있었다. 모의과정에서 침식률, 침식한계응력, 침강속도, 활성층 두께 등의 민감도를 분석하였다.

  • Since bed elevation changes are mainly dependent on the flow velocity and corresponding shear stress, it is possible to predict bed elevation numerically using velocity components. For the scour analysis due to channel contraction, a bed load transport model is developed and applied to estimate scour depth around coffer dam in the Mississippi River. During Phase I of the Lock & Dam No. 26 replacement project, a coffer dam was constructed to reduce the flow area approximately by 50%. Flow velocity increases due to the flow area reduction yields significant lowering (erosion) of the channel bed elevation. The proposed numerical model solves the sediment continuity equation using the finite element method to evaluate scour process in the vicinity of the coffer dam

Model Development for Specific Degradation Using Data Mining and Geospatial Analysis of Erosion and Sedimentation Features

  • South Korea experiences few large scale erosion and sedimentation problems, however, there are numerous local sedimentation problems. A reliable and consistent approach to modelling and management for sediment processes are desirable in the country. In this study, field measurements of sediment concentration from 34 alluvial river basins in South Korea were used with the Modified Einstein Procedure (MEP) to determine the total sediment load at the sampling locations. And then the Flow Duration-Sediment Rating Curve (FD-SRC) method was used to estimate the specific degradation for all gauging stations. The specific degradation of most rivers were found to be typically 50-300 tons/㎢·yr. A model tree data mining technique was applied to develop a model for the specific degradation based on various watershed characteristics of each watershed from GIS analysis. The meaningful parameters are: 1) elevation at the middle relative area of the hypsometric curve [m], 2) percentage of wetland and water [%], 3) percentage of urbanized area [%], and 4) Main stream length [km]. The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of existing models is in excess of 1,250 tons/㎢·yr and the RMSE of the proposed model with 6 additional validations decreased to 65 tons/㎢·yr. Erosion loss maps from the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), satellite images, and aerial photographs were used to delineate the geospatial features affecting erosion and sedimentation. The results of the geospatial analysis clearly shows that the high risk erosion area (hill slopes and construction sites at urbanized area) and sedimentation features (wetlands and agricultural reservoirs). The result of physiographical analysis also indicates that the watershed morphometric characteristic well explain the sediment transport. Sustainable management with the data mining methodologies and geospatial analysis could be helpful to solve various erosion and sedimentation problems under different conditions.

물리적 표토침식모형의 개발과 적용 (Development and Application of a Physics-based Soil Erosion Model)

  • Empirical erosion models like Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) models have been widely used to make spatially distributed soil erosion vulnerability maps. Even if the models detect vulnerable sites relatively well utilizing big data related to climate, geography, geology, land use, etc within study domains, they do not adequately describe the physical process of soil erosion on the ground surface caused by rainfall or overland flow. In other words, such models are still powerful tools to distinguish the erosion-prone areas at large scale, but physics-based models are necessary to better analyze soil erosion and deposition as well as the eroded particle transport. In this study a physics-based soil erosion modeling system was developed to produce both runoff and sediment yield time series at watershed scale and reflect them in the erosion and deposition maps. The developed modeling system consists of 3 sub-systems: rainfall pre-processor, geography pre-processor, and main modeling processor. For modeling system validation, we applied the system for various erosion cases, in particular, rainfall-runoff-sediment yield simulation and estimation of probable maximum sediment (PMS) correlated with probable maximum rainfall (PMP). The system provided acceptable performances of both applications.

하구둑 방류와 환경적 인자에 따른 낙동강 하구 지역 해저 지형변화 연구 (Bathymetric Changes in the Nakdong River Estuary owing to Discharge from the Nakdong River Barrier and Environmental Factors)

  • In this study, the bathymetric data acquired from 2018 to 2020 and the precipitation and suspended sediment data were analyzed for changes in bathymetry owing to the discharge from the Nakdong River barrier and environmental factors, especially the torrential rain in 2020. Sediment erosion and deposition processes are repeated because of complex environmental factors such as discharge from the Nakdong River barrier and the influence of waves generated from the external sea. In the first half of the year after the dry season, bathymetric data showed relative erosion trends, whereas in the second half after the flood season, deposition trends were identified owing to the increase in sediment transport. However, the data from the second half of 2020 showed a large amount of erosion, resulting in tendencies different to those of erosion in the first half and deposition in the second half of the year. This result is judged to be influenced by the weather in the summer of 2020. The torrential rain in the summer of 2020 resulted in a higher force of erosion than that of deposition. In summary, the tendency for erosion is more significant than that of sedimentation, especially in the main channel area of the Nakdong River.

NUMERICAL MODELLING OF SEDIMENT TRANSPORT IN CONNECTION WITH ARTIFICIAL GRAIN FEEDING ACTIVITIES IN THE RIVER RHINE

  • The bed evolution of the stretch of the River Rhine between km-812.5 and km-821.5 is characterised by general bed degradation as a result of the river training works and dredging activities of the last two centuries. The degradation of the river bed affects the water levels, and so the navigation conditions. To combat the erosion of the river bed with the aim to keep up the shipping traffic and to avoid the ecological system damages due to water level reductions, sand-gravel-mixtures were added to the river (so called artificial grain feeding activities). This paper presents the results of an application of a graded sediment transport model in order to study morpholodynamical characteristics due to artificial grain feeding activities in the river stretch. The finite element code TELEMAC2D was used for flow calculation by solving the 2D shallow water equation on non-structured grids. The sediment transport module SISYPHE has been developed for graded sediment transport using a multiple layer model. The needs to apply such graded sediment transport approaches to study morphological processes in the domain are discussed. The calculations have been carried out for the case of middle water flow and different size-fraction distributions. The results show that the grain feeding process could be well simulated by the model.

Recent Advances in Sedimentation and River Mechanics

  • This article describes some of the recent and on-going research developments of the author at Colorado State University. Advances in the field of sedimentation and river mechanics include basic research and computer modeling on several topics. Only a few selected topics are considered here: (1) analytical determination of velocity profiles, shear stress and sediment concentration profiles in smooth open channels; (2) experiments on bedload particle velocity in smooth and rough channels; (3) field measurements of sediment transport by size fractions in curved flumes. In terms of computer modeling, significant advances have been achieved in: (1) flashflood simulation with raster-based GIOS and radar precipitation data; and (2) physically-based computer modeling of sediment transport at the watershed scale with CASC2D-SED. Field applications, measurements and analysis of hydraulic geometry and sediment transport has been applied to: (1) gravel-bed transport measurements in a cobble-bed stream at Little Granite Creek, Wyoming; (2) sand and gravel transport by size fraction in the sharp meander bends of Fall River, Colorado; (3) changes in sand dune geometry and resistance to flow during major floods of the Rhine River in the Netherlands; (4) changes in hydraulic geometry of the Rio Grande downstream of Cochiti Dam, New Mexico; and (5) analysis of the influence of water temperature and the Coriolis force on flow velocity and sediment transport of the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana. Recent developments also include two textbooks on "Erosion and Sedimentation" and "River Mechanics" by the author and state-of-the-art papers in the ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering.
