  • Unlike face-to-face communication, text-based communication by digital media has limitations that non-verbal elements are eliminated and social presence decrease. To overcome this problem, people try to find solutions which visualize emotion and situation by using emoticons, icons, computer language and so on. As most SMS users experience the failure of using emotions on the mobile phone, they need to make up for this point. In this study, we conducted research on the recent mobile fonts situations and surveyed users' perception on SMS fonts as to suggest solutions of expressing and visualizing emotions on the mobile phone, a representative media of personal communication. As a solution of reducing the failure, we conducted a survey on users' perception about fonts and the capability of the expressing emotions by fonts. The survey found that mobile fonts can be used as a method to express human emotion. As a finding, the shape of the font can be used as a method to visualize the emotion through text messaging. In future studies, such a method can be applied to variety of different personal media with the communication method based on text. Those studies can propose different usage for fonts in communication.

  • Background: Echocardiography involves strenuous postures of the upper limbs. This study explored the physical workload in the neck and upper limbs in sonographers performing echocardiography, and the extent to which the workload differs from than in other work tasks (other sonographic examinations, and nonsonographic tasks). Methods: The physical load was assessed by inclinometry, goniometry, and electromyography methods in 33 female sonographers during authentic work using three different echocardiography techniques and other work tasks. Results: Echocardiography was characterized by low velocities of the head, arms, and wrists, and a low proportion of muscular resting time in the forearms, in the transducer limb, and the computer limb. The transducer limb was more elevated in one of the techniques, but this technique also involved a higher proportion of muscular resting time of the trapezius muscle. We also found a high proportion of awkward wrist postures in the transducer wrist in all three techniques; in one due to prolonged flexion, and in the others due to prolonged extension. Other work tasks were less static, and were performed with higher upper arm and wrist velocities. Conclusion: None of the three echocardiography techniques was optimal concerning physical workload. Thus, to achieve more variation in physical load we recommend that the equipment be arranged so that the sonographer can alternate between two different techniques during the workday. We also propose alternation between echocardiography and nonsonographic tasks, in order to introduce variation in the physical workload. Clinical expertise should be used to achieve further improvements.

  • Background: In recent years, the interest in health and safety in the workplace has increased. Agriculture is one of the human work activities with the highest risk indexes. Studies on risk perception of agricultural workers are often referred to as specific risk factors (especially pesticides), but the risk perception plays an important role in preventing every kind of accident and occupational disease. Methods: The aim of this research is to test a new method for understanding the relation between risk perception among farmers and the main risk factors to which they are exposed. A secondary aim is to investigate the influence of training in risk perception in agriculture. The data collection was realized using a questionnaire designed to investigate the risk perception; the questionnaire was given to a sample of 119 agricultural workers in central Italy. Through the use of the "principal components analysis" it was possible to highlight and verify the latent dimensions underlying the collected data in comparison with scales of attitudes. Results: Results show that the highest percentage of strong negative attitude is among the people who have worked for more years, while farmers who have worked for fewer years have a marked positive attitude. Conclusion: The analysis of the questionnaires through the synthetic index method (Rizzi index) showed that agricultural workers involved, in particular the elderly workers, have a negative attitude towards safety; workers are hostile to safety measures if they have not attended special training courses.

  • This study investigated the effects of mechanical factors involved in several corneal refractive surgeries on the surgical outcomes. Then we proposed possible new techniques from the mechanical point of a view utilizing finite element method. The models studied are: circumferential keratetomy, combination of excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy and circumferential keratotomy for myopia treatment, arcuate keratotomy for astigmatism treatment. The cornea was assumed to be nonlinear elastic and almost incompressible material as the most soft tissue in the human body. In the circumferential keratotomy the effect of the incision location was investigated. The angle and location of the incision were varied to predict the surgical outcomes in the arcuate keratotomy. The finite element analysis results showed that the location of incision was a critical factor affecting the surgical outcomes in the circumferential keratotomy. In the combination of the excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy and circumferential keratotomy, it was predicted that the circumferential can increase or decrease the refractive power depending on the incision location or it can be used to adjust the overcorrection of undercorrection. In the arcuate keratotomy for astigmatism, the most diopter changes were predicted when the location and the angle of the incision were 3.0mm from the apex and $90^{\circ}$, respectively. In the arcuate keratotomy, the effects of an incision were studied within the incision area as well as outside the incision area. Also, the arcuate keratotomy with two incisions located on the opposite area of the cornea was also studied. As a conclusion, the finite element method is a useful technique in the area of corneal refractive surgeries to develop new techinques.

  • Background: This study aimed to investigate the relation between key strike forces and musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS). Moreover, this study presents a key strike force measurement method to be used in a workplace setting. The correlation between key strike force characteristics and MSS was previously studied, but the measurement methods used either a single-key switch or force platforms applied under the keyboard. Most of the studies were conducted in a laboratory setting. The uniqueness of measurement methods in the current study is their ability to measure forces applied to a specific key in a workplace setting and to provide more information about specific key strike forces during typing. Methods: Twenty-four healthy computer workers were recruited for the study. The demographic questionnaire, and self-reported questionnaires for psychosocial status (General Nordic Questionnaire for Psychological and Social Factors at Work) and for detecting MSS were filled up, which later helped in dividing the participants into two groups (12 participants with pain and 12 without pain). Participants typed a predetermined text that utilized the instrumented keys multiple times. The dynamic forces applied to the keys were recorded and collected, using four thin and flexible force sensors attached to the preselected keys according to their location. Results: The results demonstrated that participants with high levels of MSS, specifically in the back and neck, in the last year exerted significantly higher key strike forces than those with lower levels of symptoms (p < 0.005). Conclusion: The key strike force exerted while typing on a keyboard may be a risk factor for MSS, and should therefore be considered in ergonomic evaluations and interventional programs.
