  • As a convenient means for the characterization of the wall voltage and wall charge of AC PDPs during the sustain period, an equivalent circuit model for AC PDPs is presented. The equivalent circuit model for AC PDPs consists of capacitors and thyristors. The equivalent circuit model is based on the physical structure of the AC PDP and the I-V characteristic of the discharge space. This equivalent circuit model can be easily implemented in the standard simulators such as SPICE and can easily simulate the variation of the current, charge and voltage involved in AC PDPs as the supply voltage varies.

  • The equivalent electroacoustic circuit approach has been conventionally used for estimating the absorption coefficient of a single layer perforated plate system. When the single layer system is extended to the multiple layer ones, however, it is found that an analogy error has been involved in the equivalent electroacoustic parallel circuit approach proposed by previous researchers. The analogy error is demonstrated by the corrected equivalent electroacoustir circuit approach proposed en this study.

  • A simple computational model for modeling of subsurface crack growth under cyclic contact loading is presented. In this model, it is assumed that the initial fatigue crack will initiate in the region of the maximum equivalent stress at certain depth under the contacting surface. The position and magnitude of the maximum equivalent stress are determined by using the equivalent contact model, which is based on the Hertzian contact conditions with frictional forces. The virtual crack extension method is used for simulation of the fatigue crack growth from the initial crack up to the formation of the surface pit due to contact fatigue. The relationships between the stress intensity factor and crack length are then determined for various combinations of equivalent contact radii and loadings.

  • The equivalent of a thick lens is a lens which has the same power of refraction and paraxial imaging characteristics for a reference ray, but with a different axial thickness. In this study, thick lenses of an optical system were converted to their equivalent lenses referenced to pupil imaging. Aberration changes due to the lens conversion were compared to the general equivalent lens conversion referenced to object imaging.

  • Walking loads are usually considered as nodal loads in the finite element vibration analysis of structures subjected to walking loads. Since most of the walking loads act on elements not nodes, the walking loads applied on the elements should be converted to the equivalent nodal walking loads. This paper begins with measuring walking loads by using a force plate equipped with load cells and investigates the characteristics of the walking loads with various walking rates. It is found that the walking loads are more affected by walking rates than other parameters such as pedestrian weight, type of footwear, surface condition of floor etc. The measured walking loads are used as input loads for a finite element model of walking induced vibration. Finally, this paper proposes the equivalent nodal walking loads that are converted from the walking loads acting on elements based on finite element shape functions. And the proposed equivalent walking loads are proved to be applicable for efficient analysis of floor vibration induced by walking loads.

  • One problem with base isolators of the sliding type is that their dynamic responses are nonlinear, which cannot be solved in an easy manner, as distinction must be made between the sliding and non-sliding phases. The lack of a simple method for analyzing structures installed with base isolators is one of the obstacles encountered in application of these devices. As an initial effort toward simplification of the analysis procedure for base-isolated structures, an approach will be proposed in this paper for computing the equivalent damping for the resilient-friction base isolators (R-FBI), based on the condition that the sum of the least squares of errors of the linearized response with reference to the original nonlinear one is a minimum. With the aid of equivalent damping, the original nonlinear system can be replaced by a linear one, which can then be solved by methods readily available. In this paper, equivalent damping curves are established for all ranges of the parameters that characterize the R-FBI for some design spectra.

  • A parallel-plate waveguide with a slit in its upper plate is analysed. An integral equation is formulated for the equivalent magnetic current and solved by the conventional moment method. Numerical results are presented for the magnetic current, reflection and transmission coefficients, a normalized radiated power in the slit, and equivalent circuit parameters. The equivalent circuit parameters are an useful quantities in the study of the E-plane coupled microstrip antennas.

  • We have investigated equivalent-circuit analysis of organic light-emitting diodes in $ITO/TPD/Alq_3/Al$. Complex impedance Z of the device was measured in the frequency range of $40Hz{\sim}1MHz$. We are able to interpret the frequency-dependent response in terms of equivalent-circuit model of contact resistance $R_s$ in series with two parallel combination of $R_{TPD},\;C_{TPD}\;and\;R_{Alq3},\;C_{Alq3}$.

  • This paper describes design and characteristic analysis of long primary type linear synchronous motor (LSM) for high speed train system. LSM is designed using loading distribution method and magnetic equivalent circuit. For characteristic analysis of LSM, analytical and numerical methods are applied. Analytical method for solving the magnetic field distribution of the analytic model is based on the Maxwell’s equations. Using the characteristic equation and magnetic equivalent circuit, we analyze the effect of variation of parameters, and then we validate the result by comparing with numerical method by finite element method (FEM). We compare the analytical method with numerical method for analyzing the effect by variable parameters. This result will be useful of design and forecast of performance without FEM.

  • In the previous paper, authors proposed the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM) for the lateral behavior analysis of the flat plate structure subjected to the combined gravity and lateral loads, in which the rotations of torsional members were distributed to the equivalent column and the equivalent slab according to the relative ratio of gravity and lateral loads. In this paper, the lateral behavior of the multi-span flat plate structures under various levels of combined gravity and lateral loads were analyzed by the proposed UEFM, which were compared with test results as well as those estimated by existing models. In addition, to consider the stiffness degradation of the flat plate system after cracking, the stiffness reduction factors for torsional members were derived from the test results of the interior and exterior slab-column connection specimens, based on which the simplified nonlinear push-over analysis method for flat plate structures was proposed. The simplified nonlinear analysis method provided good agreements with test results and is considered to be very useful for the practical design of the flat plate structures under the combined gravity and lateral loads.
