  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of equivalence ratio on the combustion and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine fueled with biodiesel. In this research, a single-cylinder direct injection engine with 373.3 cc of displacement volume was tested on DC dynamometer. In order to investigate the effect of biodiesel equivalence ratio on combustion characteristics, the experiments were conducted at various equivalence ratios and injection pressures of 40~120 MPa. For investigating engine performance, lambda meter was connected and equivalence ratios was varied from 0.6 to 1.0. In addition, the exhaust emissions such as oxides of nitrogen($NO_X$), hydrocarbon(HC) and carbon monoxide(CO) were measured by exhaust gas analyzer under the various air/fuel ratios. The experimental results show that maximum IMEP was measured at the 0.8 of equivalence ratio. Furthermore, $NO_X$ emission was rapidly decreased as the increase of equivalence ratio. However soot emission was significantly increased according to the increase of equivalence ratio.

  • This study reports the results of an experimental investigation of emission and temperatures from the syngas-air premixed flame with a various mixture composition in the region of large equivalence ratios. The effects of hydrogen contents and equivalence ratios on the flame velocity, which reported before, and emission of syngas fuel are examined. In this study, representative syngas mixture compositions ($H_2:CO$) such as $H_2:CO=10:90$, 25:75, 50:50 and 75:25 and equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 5.0 have been conducted. The emissions of syngas fuel were measured by the high precision analyzer with enclosure configuration and the adiabatic temperatures are calculated by used Chemkin basis. The NOx emission level is coincided relatively well with the adiabatic temperature distributions in lean mixture conditions, but for rich mixture conditions NOx level was also increased again even though the adiabatic temperature decreases. Such an increasing characteristics in rich mixture conditions is coincided well with the tendency that rather the flue gas temperature increases.

  • An experimental study of a dual swirl burner was conducted to analyze NOx emission in the lean conditions. The dual swirl burner is composed of a combination of swirling jet premixed(main section) and diffusion flames(pilot section). It was operated with a co-swirling configuration and overall equivalence ratios between 0.6 and 0.8. The purpose of this study is to analyze experimentally the characterization of flame temperature and NOx concentration in reacting zone and to supply the useful experimental data for numerical simulations. The measurements of temperature and NOx concentration were captured using a thin digitally-compensated thermocouple and a sampling quartz probe with quenching effect of sudden expansion, and were measured by the NOx analyzer of chemiluminescence method. We could analyse the NOx emission characteristics comparing the temperature distributions in the lean equivalence ratios.

  • The premixed combustion system applying exhaust gas recirculation was investigated to achieve the low pollutant emission and the high thermal efficiency. In this study, it was studied the effects of EGR on the thermal efficiency, $NO_x$ and CO emissions with various EGR ratios and equivalence ratios. As results, when equivalence ratio was increased, thermal efficiency increased and $NO_x$ and CO concentration increased. When EGR was applied, $NO_x$ and CO concentration decreased and thermal efficiency increased. Especially, in the case of 15% of EGR ratio at 0.85 of equivalence ratio, $NO_x$ and CO concentration will be a smaller than these of a current operating condition of the boiler and thermal efficiency was about 1.7% higher.

  • In this study, quantitative nitric oxide concentration distributions are investigated in the post-flame zone of laminar premixed $CH_4/O_2/N_2$, flames by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The measurements are taken in flames for different equivalence ratios varying from $0.8{\sim}1.4$, and flow rate is fixed as 5slpm. The NO A-X (0,0) vibrational band around 226 nm is excited using a XeCl excimer-pumped dye laser. Selecting an appropriate NO transition minimizes interferences from Rayleigh scattering and $O_2$ fluorescence. NO concentration is rised when equivalence ratios increase at different vertical distances form nozzle tip. In any case, the maximum NO concentration reaches the maximum in reaction zone.

  • The interaction between methane and hydrogen premixed flames with the different equivalence ratio and global strain rate was investigated numerically in one-dimensional counterflow field. The OPPDIF code and GRI-v3.0 were used to simulate the interacting flames. Overall trends in the maximum heat release rates of $CH_4{^-}$ and $H_2$-side flame were examined with the variation of $a_g$. The interaction mode of the flames were classified according to the equivalence ratios and Lewis numbers of each flame and global strain rate.

  • The impacts of equivalence ratio on the flow structure and flame dynamics in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). Dynamic k-equation model and G-equation flamelet model are employed as LES subgrid model for flow and combustion, respectively. As a result of mean flow field for each equivalence ratio, the increase of equivalence ratio brings about the decrease of swirl intensity through the modification of thermal effect and viscosity, although the same swirl intensity is imposed at inlet. The changes of vortical structure and turbulent intensity etc. near flame surface are occurred consequently. That is, the decrease of equivalence ratio can leads to the increase of heat release fluctuation by the more increased turbulent intensity and fluctuation of recirculation flow. In addition, the effect of inner vortex generated from vortex breakdown on the heat release fluctuation is increased gradually with the decrease of equivalence ratio. Finally, it can be identified that the variations of vortical structure play an important role in combustion instability, even though the small change of equivalence ratio is occurred.

  • Syngas laminar burning velocity measurements were carried out at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature using the Bunsen flame configuration with nozzle burner as a fundamental study on flame stability of syngas fuel. Representative syngas mixture compositions ($H_2$:CO) such as 25:75%, 50:50% and 75:25% and equivalence ratios from 0.5 to 1.4 have been conducted. Average laminar burning velocities have been determined by the stabilized nozzle burner flames using the angle method, radical surface area method and compared with the data obtained from the other literatures. And the results of each experimental methodologies in the various composition ratios and equivalence ratios were coincided with the result of numerical simulation. Especially, it was confirmed that there was necessary to choice a more accurate measurement methodology even the same static flame method for the various composition ratios of syngas fuel including hydrogen. Also, it was reconfirmed that the laminar burning velocities gradually increased with the increasing of hydrogen content in a fuel mixture.

  • Measurements of OH chemiluminescence in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor at equivalence ratios ranging from 0.63 to 0.89 were reported. The signal from the first electronically excited state of OH to ground state was detected through a band-pass filter with an ICCD. The objectives of this study are two: One is to see the effects of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. To get the local Rayleigh index distribution, the line-of-sight images were inverted by tomographic method, such as Abel de-convolution. Another aim is to investigate the validity of using OH chemiluminescence acquired with an ICCD as a qualitative measure of local heat release. For constant inlet velocity and temperature, the overall intensities of OH emission acquired at different equivalence ratio showed periodic and higher value at high equivalence ratio. OH intensity averaged over one period of pressure increased exponentially with equivalence ratio. Local Rayleigh index distribution clearly showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as equivalence ratio increased. It could provide an information/insights on active control such as secondary fuel injection. Finally, local heat release rate derived from reconstructed OH images were presented for typical locations.
