Electrochemical properties of Ti-30Ta-$(3{\sim}15)$Nb alloys coated by HA/Ti compound layer have been studied by various electrochemical method. Ti-30Ta binary alloys contained 3, 7, 10, and 15 wt% Nb contents were manufactured by the vacuum furnace system. The specimens were homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The samples were cut and polished for corrosion test and coating. It was coated with HA/Ti compound layer by magnetron sputter. The HA/Ti non-coated and coated morphology of Ti alloy were analyzed by x-ray diffractometer(XRD) and filed emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiodynamic method in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The homoginazed Ti-30Ta-$(3{\sim}15wt%$)Nb alloys showed the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase, and ${\beta}$ phase peak was predominantly appeared with increasing Nb content. The microstructure of Ti alloy was transformed from needle-like structure to equiaxed structure as Nb content increased. HA/Ti composite surface showed uniform coating layer with 750 nm thickness. The corrosion resistance of HA/Ti composite coated Ti-alloys were higher than those of the non-coated samples in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Especially, corrosion resistance of Ti-Ta-Nb system increased as Nb content increased.

The structure zone model has been used to provide an overview of the relationship between the microstructure of the films deposited by PVD and the most prominent deposition condition.s. B.AMovchan and AV.Demchishin have proposed it firstls such model. They concluded that the general features of the resulting structures could be correlated into three zones depending on $T/T_m$. Here T m is the melting point of the coating material and T is the substrate temperature in kelvines. Zone 1 ($T/Tm_) is dominated by tapered macrograins with domed tops, zone 2 ($O.3) by columnar grains with denser boundaries and zone 3 ($T/T_m>O.5$) by equiaxed grains formed by recrystallization. J.AThomton has extended this model to include the effect of the sputtering gas pressure and found a fourth zone termed zone T(transition zone) consisting of a dense array of poorly defined fibrous grains. R.Messier found that the zone I-T boundary (fourth zone of Thorton) varies in a fashion similar to the film bias potential as a function of gas pressure. However, there has not nearly enough model for explaining the change in morphology with crystal orientation of the films. The structure zone model only provide an information about the morphology of the deposited film. In general, the nucleation and growth mechanism for granular and fine structure of the deposited films are very complex in an PVD technique because the morphology and orientation depend not only on the substrate temperature but also on the energy of deposition of the atoms or ions, the kinetic mechanism between metal atoms and argon or nitrogen gas, and even on the presence of impurities. In order to clarify these relationship, AI and Mg thin films were prepared on SPCC steel substrates by PVD techniques. The influence of gas pressures and bias voltages on their crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films were investigated by SEM and XRD, respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the prepared films on corrosion resistance was estimated by measuring polarization curves in 3% NaCI solution.

Effects of TiN/Ti multilayer coating on the Ti-30Ta-xZr alloy surface were studied by using various experiments. The Ti-30Ta containing Zr (5, 10 and 15 wt%) were melted 10 times to improve chemical homogeneity by using a vacuum furnace. And then samples were homogenized for 24 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The specimens were prepared for TiN/Ti coating by cutting and polishing. The prepared specimens were coated with TiN/Ti multilayers by using DC magnetron sputtering method. The analyses of coated surface and coated layer were carried out by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM), EDX, and X-ray diffractometer(XRD). From the microstructure and XRD analysis of Ti-30Ta-xZr alloys, The equiaxed structure was changed to needle-like structure with increasing Zr content. And $\alpha$-peak and elastic modulus increased as Zr content increased. The $\alpha$ and $\beta$ phase predominantly were found in the specimen containing high Zr content. According to the analysis of TiN/Ti coating layer, the surface defects and structures of Ti-30Ta-xZr were covered with TiN/Ti coating layer and surface roughness decreased.
In order to investigate the high temperature deformation characteristics in YBaiCu307-, oxide superconductor, the compression test was performed at temperatures from $890^{\circ}C$ to $930^{\circ}C$ at initial strain rate between $1.0 x 10^{-5}s^{-1}\; and \; 1.0^{-4}s^{-1}$. As the temperature increased and the initial strain rate decreased, the flow stress decreased. The strain rate sensitivity exponent measured as 0.41-0.46, supporting occurence of a superplastic deformation. The activation energy for superplastic deformation was calculated as 500-580KJ/mol, which decreased with increasing Ag content. Microstructure of the superplastically-deformed specimens showed that a grain growth occurred during deformation, and it appeared to be considerable when Ag content increased, but most grains still remained equiaxed after deformation. In this study, the deformation mechanism of YBCO superconductor was the grain boundary sliding with the diffusional accommodation and the contribution of the gram boundary sliding to the total strain was estimated to be 65%.
Electron beam (EB) weldability of pure grade Nb sheet was studied. One of Nb sheets was as-annealed and the other was cold rolled. Microstructures, Vickers hardness, and transverse weld tensile test were carried out for the base metal, the heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal. In the case of the EB welds made using the annealed Nb sheeet, fine equiaxed grains and coarse grains were dominant at the base metal and the HAZ, respectively, and columnar grains were observed at the weld metal. For the EB welds made using the cold rolled Nb sheet, elongated grains in the rolling direction at the base metal, and the microstructures of the weld metal and the HAZ are similar to those of the EB welds made using the annealed Nb sheet, respectively. For both annealed and cold rolled Nb sheet, the width of the HAZs are unusually wide in spite of using high density heat source, i.e. electron beam, and the grain sizes of both HAZs are similar. When tensile test was carried out using the transverse weld specimens, the failure occurred at the HAZ for both EB welds made using Nb sheets annealed and cold rolled, respectively and the tensile strengths of both specimens were 161MPa. Vickers hardness of EB welds made using annealed Nb was 56-57 Hv at both base metal and weld metal, 52-53 Hv at the HAZ. On the other hand, Vickers hardness of EB welds made using cold rolled Nb was 97-99 Hv at the base metal, but the hardness values of weld metal were similar to those obtained at the weld metal of annealed Nb.
The effects of Cr and Fe addition on the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloys prepared by direct energy deposition were investigated. As the Cr and Fe concentrations were increased from 0 to 2 mass%, the tensile strength increased because of the fine-grained equiaxed prior ${\beta}$ phase and martensite. An excellent combination of strength and ductility was obtained in these alloys. When the Cr and Fe concentrations were increased to 4 mass%, extremely fine-grained martensitic structures with poor ductility were obtained. In addition, Fe-added Ti-6Al-4V resulted in a partially melted Ti-6Al-4V powder because of the large difference between the melting temperatures of the Fe eutectic phase (Ti-33Fe) and the Ti-6Al-4V powder, which induced the formation of a thick liquid layer surrounding Ti-6Al-4V. The ductility of Fe-added Ti-6Al-4V was thus poorer than that of Cr-added Ti-6Al-4V.
Effects of Sc addition on microstructure, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the as-cast and as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-xSc (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5 wt%) alloys are investigated. The average grain size of the as-cast Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg alloy is 2,334 ㎛; however, this value drops to 914 and 529 ㎛ with addition of Sc element at 0.25 wt% and 0.5 wt%, respectively. This grain refinement is due to primary Al3Sc phase forming during solidification. The as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg alloy has a recrystallization structure consisting of almost equiaxed grains. However, the as-extruded Sc-containing alloys consist of grains that are extremely elongated in the extrusion direction. In addition, it is found that the proportion of low-angle grain boundaries below 15 degree is dominant. This is because the addition of Sc results in the formation of coherent and nano-scale Al3Sc phases during hot extrusion, inhibiting the process of recrystallization and improving the strength by pinning of dislocations and the formation of subgrain boundaries. The maximum values of the yield and tensile strength are 126 MPa and 215 MPa for the as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-0.25Sc alloy, respectively. The increase in strength is probably due to the existence of nano-scale Al3Sc precipitates and dense Al2Cu phases. Thermal conductivity of the as-cast Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-xSc alloy is reduced to 204, 187 and 183 W/MK by additions of elemental Sc of 0, 0.25 and 0.5 wt%, respectively. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity of the as-extruded Al-2Zn-1Cu-0.3Mg-xSc alloy is about 200 W/Mk regardless of the content of Sc. This is because of the formation of coherent Al3Sc phase, which decreases Sc content and causes extremely high electrical resistivity.

High-density SiC-AIN solid solutions were fabricated from powder mixtures of $\beta$-SiC and AIN by hot-pressing in the 1870 to $2030^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The reaction of AIN and $\beta$-SiC (3C) powder transformed to the 2 H (wurzite) structure appeared to depend on the temperature and SiC/A1N ratio and seeds present. The crystalline phases consisted of a SiC-rich solid-solution phase and an A1N-rich solid-solution phase. At $2030^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, for a composition of 50 % AIN/50 % SiC with a seeding of $\alpha$-SiC, the complete solid solution could be obtained and the microstructures are equiaxed with a relatively homogeneous grain size of 2 H phases. The variation of the seeding of $\alpha$-SiC in SIC-A1N solid solutions could be attributed to the transformation behaviour and differences in size and shape of the grains, as well as to other factors, such as grain size distributions, compositional inhomogeneity, and structural defects.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of nanotubular Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary alloys for dental implant materials. Materials and Methods: Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys with different Zr contents (0, 3, 7, and 15 wt.%) were manufactured using commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti), niobium (Nb), and zirconium (Zr) (99.95 wt.% purity). The alloys were prepared by arc melting in argon (Ar) atmosphere. The Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys were homogenized in Ar atmosphere at $1,000^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours followed by quenching into ice water. The microstructure of the Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was examined by a field emission scanning electron microscope. The phases in the alloys were identified by an X-ray diffractometer. The chemical composition of the nanotube-formed surfaces was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Self-organized $TiO_2$ was prepared by electrochemical oxidation of the samples in a $1.0M\;H_3PO_4+0.8wt.%$ NaF electrolyte. The anodization potential was 30 V and time was 1 hour by DC supplier. Surface wettability was evaluated for both the metallographically polished and nanotube-formed surfaces using a contact-angle goniometer. The corrosion properties of the specimens were investigated using a 0.9 wt.% aqueous solution of NaCl at $36^{\circ}C{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ using a potentiodynamic polarization test. Result: Needle-like structure of Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was transform to equiaxed structure as Zr content increased. Nanotube formed on Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys show two sizes of nanotube structure. The diameters of the large tubes decreased and small tubes increased as Zr content increased. The lower contact angles for nanotube formed Ti-25NbxZr alloys surfaces showed compare to non-nanotube formed surface. The corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface showed longer the passive regions compared to non-treatment surface. Conclusion: It is confirmed that corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface has longer passive region compared to without treatment surface.

Rapid densification of a SiC powder with additive 0.5 wt% $B_4$C was conducted by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The unique features of the process are the possibilities of using very fast heating rate and short holding time to obtain fully dense materials. The heating rate and applied pressure were kept to be $100^{\circ}C$/min and 40 MPa, while sintering temperature and soaking time varied to 1800, 1850, 1900 and $1950^{\circ}C$ and 10, 20 and 30 min, respectively. All of the SPS-sintered specimens at $1950^{\circ}C$ reached near-theoretical density. The XRD found that 3C-to-6H transformation at $1850^{\circ}C$. The microstructures of the rapidly densified SiC ceramics consisted of duplex microstructure with ultrafine equiaxed grains under 2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and elongated grains of 0.5∼2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ wide, length 3∼10 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The biaxial strength increased with the increase of sintering time. Strength of 392.7 MPa was obtained with the fully densified specimen sintered at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, in agreement with the general tendency that strength increases with decreases pore. On the other hand, the fracture toughness shows the value of 2.17∼2.34 MPa$.$$m^{1/2}$ which might be due to the transgranular fracture mode.
