  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) produced by chemical vapor deposition were treated with acidic solution for purification and oxidization of CNTs. The surface modification of the oxidized CNTs was achieved by amine treatment and oxygen plasma treatment. The functionalized CNTs were embedded in the epoxy resin by sonication method and the resulting composite was investigated by FESEM. Rheological and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were measured by AR2000 and Instron. The rheological properties and dispersion of modified CNTs/epoxy composites were improved as CNTs were modified, because the modification of CNTs led to a improvement interaction between the CNTs and the epoxy resin. In addition to this, mechanical properties are also improved because of the effective stress transfer between the CNTs and the polymer.

  • Frequency accelerated partial discharge resistance (PDR) aging of epoxy/layered silicate nanocomposite with 1.5wt % additions of layered silicate was investigated in comparison with that of epoxy without layered silicate in terms of PD(partial discharge) erosion depth. It was found that the change in the erosion depth is far smaller in specimens with layered silicate than those without layered silicate nano particles. Frequency acceleration can be done from 60Hz to 1000Hz. But the depth of erosion is less proportional to frequency. Acceleration factor is almost 2 times between 500Hz and 1000Hz, but it is much less than about 8.3 times between 60Hz and 500Hz. This superior PD resistance is caused by the presence of nanofillers, anano-effect due to closely packed nanofillers, and strong chemical bonds at layered silicate nanofillers /resin interfaces.

  • A new type of filler for epoxy-clay nanocomposites has been prepared by the reaction of octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and layered sodium montmorillonite (MMT) via an ion-exchange reaction. The gallery space was further modified by grafting the aminopropyl groups via a reaction between a octadecyltrimethylammonium-MMT and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS). The interlayer modification of MMT was confirmed by XRD, IR, and solid-state $^{29}$ Si CP/MAS NMR. Furthermore, clay-polymer nanocomposites have been synthesized by the polymerization of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) and $C_{18}$ H$_{37}$ N($CH_3$)$_3$-APS-MMT. The resulting hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results proved that the organomontmorillonite could be exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in the epoxy matrix.

  • Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.

  • In order to overcome drawbacks in the conventional preparation of epoxy/silica nanocomposites, such as formation of micro voids and dimensional instability caused by evolution of volatile by-products during curing reaction, a novel preparation method using Si-N precursor has been proposed. When prepared through in-situ reaction of epoxy curing reaction with sol-gel reaction of Si-N precursor, methyltripiperidinylsilane (MTPS) which does not produce by-products during reaction, epoxy/silica nanocomposites of extremely even dispersion of inorganic phase could be successfully prepared, resulting in high enhancement of mechanical and thermal properties as well as outstanding transparency.

  • Graphene doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (G-ZnO) were prepared using modified hummer's technique together with the ultrasonic method and characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Different samples of epoxy resin nanocomposites reinforced with G-ZnO nanoparticles were prepared and were marked as F1 (without adding nanoparticles), F2 (1% w/w G-ZnO), and F3 (2% w/w G-ZnO) in combination of ≈ 56:18:18:8w/w% with epoxy resin/hardener, ammonium polyphosphate, boric acid, and Chitosan. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) of the epoxy nanocomposites was observed to decrease dramatically with the increasing G-ZnO nanoparticles. However, the LOI values increased significantly with the increase in wt % of G-ZnO nanoparticles. From the UL-94V data, it was confirmed that the F2 and F3 samples passed the flame test and were rated as V-0. The results obtained in the present work clearly revealed that the synthesized samples can be used as efficient materials in fire-retardant coating technology.

  • ZnAl-LDH(layered double hydroxide) modified with oleic acid(SO-ZnAl LDH) was synthesized and added to the flame retardant ABS compounds containing brominated epoxy resin(BER) and antimony trioxide(${Sb_2}{O_3}$). Flame retardant ABS compounds were manufactured by using a twin-screw co-rotating extruder and subsequently injection molded into several specimen for flame retardancy and mechanical properties. The XRD patterns of ABS nanocomposites showed no peaks. The thermal stability of ABS nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of SO-ZnAl LDH as shown in TGA results. However, these nanocomposites showed no rating in the UL 94 vertical test at 1.6 mm thickness. Only ABS nanocomposites with additional BER more than 1.5 wt% showed UL 94 V0 rating. Notched Izod impact strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break of flame retardant ABS nanocomposites increased with the proportion of So-ZnAl LDH whereas their melt index decreased.

  • In this study, the moisture related hygroscopic characteristics and mechanical properties of epoxy-clay nanocomposites were investigated by experiments as a function of the weight fraction of nanoclay. The hygroscopic and mechanical properties including the moisture saturation amount, moisture diffusivity, adhesive strength, and tensile properties were obtained by moisture absorption test and various tensile tests, respectively. Also, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was devised to study of hygroscopic characteristics of nanocomposites and the results were compared to experimental results as a function of the nanoclay content. It was demonstrated that the proposed MD simulation technique can be successfully used for the prediction of the effects of the nanoclay on the moisture diffusion characteristics.
