In the present work, a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composite, filled with Zn-ion coated structural silica encapsulated with the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), was synthesized using the conventional melt-blending technique in a sigma internal mixer. The catalytic activity of the Zn-ions (originating from the structural silica) towards the oxirane group (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA): encapsulating agent) was assessed by infrared spectroscopy. Two composites, each with a filler content of $2.5 wt\%$ were developed. The first one was obtained by melt blending the Zn-ion coated structural silica with LDPE in a co-rotating sigma internal mixer. The second one was obtained by melt blending the same LDPE, but with DGEBA encapsulated Zn-ion coated structural silica. Epoxy resin encapsulation of the Zn-ion coated structural silica resulted in its having good interfacial adhesion and a homogeneous dispersion in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the encapsulation of epoxy resin over the Zn-ion coated structural silica showed improvements in both the mechanical and thermal properties, viz. a $33\%$ increase in the elastic modulus and a rise in the onset degradation temperature from 355 to $371^{\circ}C$, in comparison to the Zn-ion coated structural silica.

Mechanical and electrical properties of epoxy/silica microcomposites were investigated. The cycloaliphatic- type epoxy resin was diglycidyl 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylate and the curing agent was of an anhydride type. To measure the glass transition temperature (Tg), dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was carried out, and tensile and flexural tests were performed using a universal testing machine (UTM). Electrical breakdown strength, the most important property for electrical insulation materials, and insulation breakdown strength were also tested. The microcomposite with 60 wt% microsilica showed maximum values in mechanical and electrical properties.

This work is to fabricate a precise optical fiber array using polymer composite for optical interconnection. Optical fiber array has to satisfy low optical loss requirement less than 0.4 dB according to temperature change. For this purpose, design criteria for an optical fiber array was derived. The coefficient of thermal expansion of silica particulate epoxy composites was affected by volume fraction of silica particles. And also, elastic modulus of silica particulate epoxy composites was affected by volume fraction of silica particles. To obtain the coefficients of thermal expansion below $10{\times}10E-6/^{\circ}C$ and elastic modulus more than 20 GPa , we chose the volume fraction more than 76%. Using silica particulate epoxy composites with the volume fraction 76%, 8-channel optical fiber array with dimensional tolerances below $1\;{\mu}m$ was manufactured by transfer molding technique using dies with the uniquely-designed core pin and precisely-machined zirconia ceramic V block. These optical fiber arrays showed optical loss variations within 0.4 dB under thermal cycling test and high temperature test.
This paper presents the tensile characteristics for carbon/epoxy, carbon/phenolic and silica/phenolic composites under elevated temperature, which are considered for vehicle structure or thermal protection materials. The tensile test was conducted with servo-hydraulic testing machine and high temperature furnace, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio were evaluated by using high temperature strain gages. Also, they were compared each other with respect to fiber orientation and temperature effect. These test results were used for designing and analyzing some airframe structures with these composites.
In this study, to improve the thermal stabilities of the epoxy composite specimens in addition to the enhanced mechanical properties, those were reinforced with carbon nanotubes and micrometer-sized silica particles. To disperse the filler in matrix relatively simple physical process, specimens were fabricated using shear mixing and sonication. Tensile strength, coefficients of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of the specimens were measured with varied contents of the two fillers. The mechanical and thermal properties were also discussed, and the experimental results of thermal expansion related to the thermal stability of the specimens were compared with those from several micromechanics models. The hybrid composites specimens incorporating 0.6 wt% of carbon nanotubes and 50 wt% of silica particles showed better mechanical properties than the others with increase in tensile strength up to 11%, with respect to those of the baseline specimens. As the silica contents were increased the thermal expansion was reduced down to 36%, and the thermal stability was improved with the decreased thermal deformation. Thermal conductivity of the epoxy composite specimens incorporating 50 wt% of silica particles was enhanced, which demonstrate improvement of 72%. The mechanical and thermal properties of the hybrid composites specimens incorporating the two fillers were improved simultaneously.

This paper analyzed the degradation behaviors of silica nano epoxy composite based on the isoconversional method. The size of the silica nano particle was about 12 nm and the particles were mixed by three different weight ratios to make the degradation test samples. The thermogravimetric analyses were performed under six different temperature increase rates to measure the weight changes. Four different methods, Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, Kissinger and DAEM (Distributed Activation Energy Method), were employed to calculate the activation energies depending on the conversion ratios, and their calculation results were compared. The results represented that the activation energy was increased when the silica nano particles were mixed up to 10%, indicating the definite contribution of the particles to the degradation behavior enhancements. However, the enhancement was not proportional to the particle mixture ratio by demonstrating the similar activation energies between 10% and 18% samples. The calculation results by the different methods were also compared and discussed.

In order to characterize insulation properties of epoxy/micro-silica/nano-silicate composite (EMNC), long-term and short-term AC treeing tests were carried out undr non-uniform electric field generated between needle-plate electrodes. In a long-term test, a 10 kV (60 Hz) electrical field was applied to the specimen positioned between the electrodes with a distance of 2.7 mm in an insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$, and a typical branch type electrical tree was observed in the neat epoxy resin and breakdown took place at 1,042 min after applying the 10 kVelectrical field. Meanwhile, the spherical tree with the tree length of $237{\mu}m$ was seen in EMNC-65-0.3 at 52,380 min (36.4 day) and then the test was stopped because the tree propagation rate was too low. In the short-term test, an electrial field was applied to a 3.5 mm-thick specimen at an increasing voltage rate of 0.5 kV/s until breakdown in insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, and the data was estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical insulation breakdown strength for neat epoxy resin was 1,763 kV/mm at $30^{\circ}C$, while that for EMNC-65-0.3 was 2,604 kV/mm, which was a modified value of 47%. As was expected, the breakdown strength decreased at higher test temperatures.

In this study, we synthesized poly(itaconic acid-co-acrylamide) (IAcAAM) used as a novel polymer adhesion promoter to improve the adhesion strength of surface-treated Cu lead frames and epoxy composites. IAcAAM comprising itaconic acid, acrylamide was prepared through radical aqueous polymerization. The chemical structure and properties of IAcAAM was analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and DSC. The surface of the copper lead frame was treated with high temperature, alkali, and UV ozone to reduce the water contact angle and increase the surface energy. The adhesive strength of Cu lead frame and epoxy composite increased with the decrease of contact angle. The adhesive strength of Cu lead frame/epoxy composite increased with the addition of IAcAAM in epoxy composite. As silica content increased, the adhesive strength of Cu lead frame and epoxy composite tended to slightly decrease.

This paper analyzed the effects of the concentration of nano-silica particles contained in epoxy resin on the thermomechanical properties of the composite materials. The 12nm sized nanoparticles were mixed with epoxy polymer by 5 different weight ratios for the test samples. The glass transition temperature, stress relaxation, and thermal expansion behaviors were measured using dymanic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and thermomechanical analyzer (TMA). It was shown that the nano particle mixing ratios had significant influences on the viscoelastic behaviors of the materials. As the content of the silica particles was increased, the elastic modulus was also increased, while the glass transition temperatures were decreased. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results played an important role in determining the causes of the property changes by the filler contents in terms of the molecular structures, enabling the interpretations on the material behaviors based on the chemical structure changes.

In this study, 40, 50, 60, and 70 wt% filler dispersed samples were prepared for the current GIS Spacer or environmentally friendly GIS. In the AC electrical breakdown, EMSC and EMAC decreased with increasing filler content, and EMSC showed better breakdown strength than EMAC. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and flexural strength of EMSC and EMAC were also increased with increasing filler content. In addition, EMSC results in better mechanical properties than EMAC. The reason for this is considered to be one in which the influence of the interface is important.
