  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe adverse cutaneous drug reaction seen rarely in clinical practice. Although relatively rare, the condition can be fatal. Mainly, it is caused by side effects of certain medications. Previous reports have associated Stevens-Johnson syndrome with abnormal root development, but the other long-term dental complications have rarely been reported. In this case, the patient developed SJS at the age of 5, and abnormal root development of the maxillary and mandibular first molars and mandibular incisors was observed, as well as impaction of the mandibular canine and enamel hypomineralization of multiple teeth. Accordingly, appropriate restorative treatment and orthodontic treatment were performed, and the clinical characteristics of this symptoms and its treatment were discussed in more detail. We aim to highlight the need for dentists to be aware of the potential dental complications of SJS and to enable early diagnosis and management of the condition to avoid undesirable sequelae.

  • Scanning electron micrography and Transmission electron micrography studies were performed on the surfaces of stem(coleoptiles) of rice and barnyardgrass under various cropping patterns at 5 days after seeding or transplanting. Stem surfaces of rice under dry condition possessed rodlet-like epicuticular waxes, trichomes, stomata and cork cell layer in both broadcast and drilled rice while barnyardgrass had only thread-like epicuticular waxes, but trichomes, stomata and cork cell layers were not found. However, rice under water condition has no rodlet-like waxes, stomata and cork cells, and barnyardgrass was similar to that under dry condition. On the other hand, those on stems of 8-day and 25-day transplanted rice were well arranged and developed compared with those of direct seeded rice. Electron micrography showed significant difference in thickness of outer epidermal cell walls of rice and barnyardgrass under dry, water and transplanting condition. Thickness of outer epidermal cell was greater in transplanted rice, dry direct seeded rice, water-direct seeded rice and barnyardgrass in descending order.

  • ALA (5-aminolevulinic acid) has been proposed as a tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic herbicide by the action of the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (Protox IX). A study was conducted to determine photodynamic herbicidal effect of ALA on seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) under dry and wet conditions. ALA effect on early plant growth of rice and barnyardgrass was greatly concentration dependant, suggesting that it promotes plant growth at very low concentration and inhibits at high concentration. No significant difference in herbicidal activity of biologically and synthetically produced ALAs on plant lengths of test plants was observed ALA exhibited significant photodynamic activity regardless of PSDIP and its duration. Significant shoot growth inhibition by ALA soaking treatment exhibited apparently, indicating that ALA absorbed through root system was translocated into shoot part of plants. ALA reduced plant heights of rice and barnyardgrass seedlings by 6% and 27%, respectively, showing more tolerant to ALA in rice under wet condition. Leaf thickness was reduced markedly by ALA with increasing of ALA concentration, due to mainly membrane destruction and severe loss of turgidity in mesophyll cells, although the epidermal was little affected. It was observed that photodynamic herbicidal activity of ALA applied by pre-and post-emergence application exhibited differently on plant species, and that the activity of ALA against susceptible plants was highly correlated with growing condition.

  • In this study, the change of skin condition was analyzed by skin analysis equipment using scrub cosmetics, and the morphological characteristics of microbead were observed by dermascope and scanning electron microscope. In the dermascope observation, during the process of cleansing, the microbeads attached to the skin existed in close contact with each other or dispersed. The skin after scrubbing was clean and smooth and the fine wrinkles between epidermal keratinocytes were reduced. In the scanning electron microscopic observation, the microbead surface did not have severe bending or rough surface. The skin moisture and oil content were higher than the scrub skin before the scrub, and there was no significant difference in the pH.

  • At 5 DAS/T, leaf primordia of rice stems that were grown under dry condition in transverse sections were strongly stained while those under water condition had many aerenchyma cells well developed. On the other hand, leaf primordia and large air spaces in stem of transplanted rice were well developed. Rice in leaf anatomy had small and fine epidermal cells, chlorophyllous mesophylls, and bulliform cells but had no chlorophyllous vascular bundle sheath cells, while barnyardgrass leaf had large, rough and irregularly arranged epidermal cells, chlorophyllous vascular bundle sheath cells, and non-bulliform cells but had no chlorophyllous mesophylls. Epidermal cells of transplanted rice, however, were well developed, differentiated and sclerified. Cross sections of rice root under dry condition showed cell contents, regularly arranged cells, non-intercellular spaces and non-aerenchyma while under water condition had well-developed intercellular spaces, aerenchyma cells, small and densely arranged epidermis, sclerified exodermis and sclerenchyma cells. But root anatomy of transplanted rice consisted of finely, regularly arranged epidermis, well-developed intercellular spaces and nucleous cells.

  • Objective : Active treatment for a skin condition has produced a substantial change in the history of allergic contact or wound induced dermatitis. The frequency of opportunistic contacts and allergen-related dermatitis has increased, though new skin treatments have developed. Especially, there has been a interest in the korean herbal bathing. This study was performed to investigate the effects of the korean herbal bathing candidates on skin lesions in mice model. These candidates are Korea's representative herbs on skin lesions. Method : ICR mice were divided into five groups : naive, control, experimental group A and B and C. Control and experimental groups induced skin lesions by DNFB and TMA. Each experimental group was pasted with corresponding korean herbal bathing candidates on skin lesions. Result : Significant improvements in skin wound index, epidermal thickness associated with skin lesions were seen with the korean herbal bathing candidates. Conclusion : These results suggest that the korean herbal bathing candidates could be at least as effective as steroid, anti-histamine for the treatment of skin lesions.

  • Purpose: The odontogenic sinus and fistulous tracts is the most common draining sinus and fistulous tract of the head and neck region. These are often misdiagnoses by clinicions who are not familiar with cutaneous sinus, since most of patients do not have dental symptoms. Here we present two cases of odontogenic cutaneous sinus tract which have been diagnosed after excision of epidermal cyst. Methods: Two patients who presented with an odontogenic sinus tract draining to the skin at our institusion during the two years were enrolled in this study. We reviewed all the medical records of the patients and literature about odontogenic cutaneous sinus tract. Results: Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts of our cases were healed after treatment of periapical odontitis and extraction of the carious tooth. Conclusion: The cutaneous sinus tract of dental origin is well documented condition. But its diagnosis is not always easy unless the clinicians consider the possibility of its dental origin. An understanding of the pathogenesis of odontogenic cutaneous sinus tract will lead to early correct diagnosis and proper treatment without unnecessary surgery.

  • Objectives : This study investigated the anti-oxidant activities and improving effect of Phellinus linteus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis Extract (PGE) on Atopic Dermatitis. Methods : 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, 2,2′-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical, Hydrogen peroxides scavenging activities and Superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities were used for the measurement of anti-oxidant ability. Cytotoxicity of PGE in Raw 264.7 cell was evaluated by MTT assay. To evaluate the anti-atopic dermatitis effect of PGE, a total of 33 patients with atopic dermatitis were observed trans epidermal water loss, skin moisture content, modified SCORAD index of atopic dermatitis and pruritic degree after applying the PGE for 4 weeks. Results : PGE scavenged DPPH ($IC_{50}=25ppm$) effectively, ABTS and Hydrogenperoxides scavenged similar to BHA. As for the SOD-like activity, it had lower effect than ascorbic acid, but it comparable activities in 500ppm. There was no cytotoxicity at PGE at concentrations of 10,000ppm. In clinical research about PGE on patients with atopic dermatitis, skin condition was improved. After 4 weeks, the application of PGE increased skin moisture content from 19.43 to 31.22. Moreover, it reduced the skin temperature (from 32.5 to 31.9), skin pH (from 5.39 to 5.22), trans epidermal water loss (from 39.03 to 24.46) and pruritus score (from 6.07 to 3.87). In addition, the Modified SCORAD index decreased from 31.28 to 20.3. Conclusions : In conclusion, PGE possesses anti-oxidant and anti-atopic dermatitis activities, thus it could be potentially valuable as anti-atopic dermatitis material.

  • We investigated the culture condition and effects of various growth factors on the culture of salivary gland acinar cells. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats (about 6 weeks old) were sacrificed and their submandibular, sublingual, and parotid glands were used as specimens. High oxygen level more than 90% and coating of Matrigel on culture dish were important factors to help increase the survival time of acinar cells, Proper concentration of enzymes such as collagenase and hyaluronidase during isolation steps was also important. Addition of various growth factors such as dexamethasone, insulin, transferrin, selenous acid, reduced glutathione, epidermal growth factor, isoproterenol, and putrescine in culture medium helped to increase lifetime of cultured salivary acinar cells.
