  • Background: Plastic waste generates pollutants in the process of incineration or landfilling, and accumulates in water or marine organisms, causing adverse effects on the environment and the human body. Recently, various eco-friendly oral hygiene products (Eco-OHPs) such as bamboo toothbrushes and biodegradable plastic toothbrushes have been developed. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the current level of awareness and purchasing status of eco-OHPs among adults who are interested in eco-friendly products. Methods: This study included adults aged >19 years who regularly visited eco-friendly shops and online sites; the online survey links were distributed during their visits to eco-friendly Internet cafés and companies. Of the 22 questions, seven assessed the participants' general characteristics, three assessed the general oral hygiene care products used, six assessed the level of awareness of Eco-OHPs, and six assessed the purchasing status of Eco-OHPs. Frequency analysis, chi-square test, and regression analysis were performed using SPSS software. Results: Among the respondents, 108 (51.4%) were aware of Eco-OHPs, and 79 (37.6%) had experience purchasing Eco-OHPs. The most common reason for not purchasing was the lack of information about related brands or products (74, 56.5%). The most common platform used in obtaining information was the Internet (general: 31.5%, eco-friendly: 46.3%), such as Social Network Service, Internet cafes, and blogs. The experience in purchasing Eco-OHPs was affected by whether the respondents recognized the possibility of contributing to environmental preservation, availability of vendors, product safety, and the number of eco-friendly products purchased. Conclusion: In order to expand the use of Eco-OHPs, various efforts such as promotion of eco-friendly characteristics, determination of related vendors, reliable analysis of product safety, and expansion of product experience opportunities are required.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the satisfaction of the urban parks and to classify and assess the environmentally-friendly behaviors in the urban parks. For this purpose, the park user's behaviors and satisfactions were surveyed in 10 parks in Seoul and its suburb area. Parks are divided into 2 types, the walking-distance parks and the metropolitan parks, by time to reach, visit frequency and visit purpose. The park users are generally satisfied with the facilities, but not satisfied with some specific items, such as cultural facilities, accommodations for the handicapped, safety facilities and sports facilities. The environmentally-friendly behaviors are positively assessed in general, but the behavior of the natural experience was negatively assessed. The environmentally-friendly behaviors in the urban parks are classified into 2 factors; the experience factor and the activity factor. The parks are categorized into 3 types by these factors. For type I parks, the experience factor is dominant, but the activity factor is relatively low. For type II parks, the both factors are low and the parks are necessary to improve. And type III parks are positively assessed in the aspect of the environmentally-friendly behaviors, even though some park are necessary to complement.

  • This study makes an attempt to appraise how much successful both (Ham-Pyung) Butterfly Festival and (Mu-Ju) Firefly Festival are in the view point of ecology-friendly effects, and based on this appraisal, searches for desirable and developmental directions of other eco-festivals. The empirical analysis of the study shows that even if the Butterfly Festival turns out to be more famous than the Firefly Festival, the latter is confirmed to be more eco-friendly than the former. The fact that the latter is more eco-friendly seems to be due to the fact that the subject matter, that is the theme, of the festival is the fireflies which are not only natural monuments but also peculiar in-site-resources specific to Mu-Ju. This fact suggests that the other eco-festivals, newly emerging ones in particular, need to find and designate in-site-resources inherent in their regions as the theme, as far as possible.

  • Soil ecology has important roles in global ecosystems. However, soil ecological quality information is being ignored when assessing ecological impact of construction actions. And methods for classifying and assessing soil ecological quality have been very little established in comparison to those for animal and plant ecosystems. In this study, it was examined whether soil ecological quality information has influence on determining an eco-friendly route for a road construction project. For this, sensitivity analysis was systematically performed by varying the relative significance (weights) of soil ecological quality information among natural environmental and ecological factors. When the weight of soil ecological quality was greater than just 14%, the soil ecological quality information significantly influenced the determination of the eco-friendly routes for a specific road construction project. This demonstrates that soil ecological quality information has to be considered for more reliable environmental impact assessment, and also supports the validity of use of soil ecological quality information and its mapping technique in planning and siting of eco-friendly construction projects.

  • There are more interests and studies to change the buildings into eco-friendly spaces as the present age recognizes nature-friendly environment more and more. In response to this trend, the government reinforces regulations for the variety of the eco-friendly buildings using a certification system. The eco-friendly certification system which was started only for residing since 2002, and this has been now for schools that are the spaces of the students who will lead the future since March 2005. The purpose of this study is to help understanding of the eco-friendly buildings, and to popularize and activate those as developing and making up for the classification system, evaluation items, detailed standards to evaluate them more precisely by analysing eco-friendly planning features and data of the eco-friendly certificated schools. This study selected 15 eco-friendly certified schools among the schools certified by the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affaires since 2005, and analyzed evaluation result. After the analysis, I had a thorough grasp of the point distribution of the each building, analyzed the cause of the low points or no points, and tried to find the improvements. There should be continuing adjustment and complement for the evaluation items and detailed standards, and these should be applied to models as well as certified schools. Active public relations are also needed to educate the public and elevate their participation.
