  • Measurements of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were taken in surface sediments inside Seogwipo and Hallim Harbors of Jeju Island, Korea, to evaluate their distribution. These harbors typically have heavy ship traffic. The samples were collected three times (in June, October, and December, 2013). PCB concentrations in sediments from Seogwipo Harbor were higher than in those from Hallim Harbor, but both levels were very low, compared with those in other parts of the world. Sedimentary PCB levels had a strong correlation with organic carbon and fine granule mud content. PCB concentration values in the examined surface sediments were much lower than Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) such as ER-L (Effect Rrange-Low), TEL (Threshold Effects Level) and ISQG (Interim Sediment Quality Guideline)-low value applied in countries, such as USA, Canada, and Australia. This suggests that the PCBs did not have significant biological effects on benthic organisms in the marine environment.

  • This study was designed to synthesize mesoporous carbon, porous carbonic material and to characterize its surface in an attempt to adsorption methane gas($CH_4$). Synthesis of mesoporous carbon was carried out under two steps ; 1. forming a RF-silica complex with a mold using CTMABr, a surfactant, and TEOS, raw material of silica, and 2. eliminating silica through carbonization and HF treatment. The mesoporous carbon was synthesized under various conditions of synthesis time and calcination. Eight different types of mesoporous carbon, which were designated as MC1, MC2, MC3, MC4, MCT1, MCT2, MCT3, and MCT4, were prepared depending upon preparation conditions. The analysis of mesoporous carbon characteristics showed that the calcination of silica stabilized the mixed structure of silica and carbonic complex, and made the particle uniform. The results also showed that hydrothermal synthesis time did not have a strong influence on the size of pore. The bigger specific surface area was obtained as the hydrothermal synthesis time was extended. However, the specific surface area was getting smaller again after a certain period of time. In adsorption experiments, $CH_4$ was used as adsorbate. For the case of $CH_4$, MCT3 showed the highest adsorption efficiency.

  • In this study the optimal volume for non-point source control retention is estimated considering spatio-temporal variation of land surface. The 3-parameter mixed exponential probability density function is used to represent the statistical properties of rainfall events, and NRCS-CN method is applied as rainfall-runoff transformation. The catchment drainage area is divided into individual $30m{\times}30m$ cells, and runoff curve number is estimated at each cell. Using the derived probability density function theory, the stormwater probability density function at each cell is derived from the rainfall probability density function and NRCS-CN rainfall-runoff transformation. Considering the antecedent soil moisture condition at each cell and the spatial variation of CN value at the whole catchment drainage area, the ensemble stormwater capture curve is established to estimate the optimal volume for an non-point source control retention. The comparison between spatio-temporally varied land surface and constant land surface is presented as a case study for a urban drainage area.

  • The field observation was carried out to investigate the characteristics of surface inversion layer at Kimhae using the feild observed date and upper layer meteorological data during 4-5 February 1993. The results of the study can be summarized as follows : The maximum height of surface inversion layer observed at Kimhae is 193m and the height of upper level inversion layer ranges from 2nm to 300m. The surface weather elements was influenced the formation of surface inversion layer. According to the pasquill stability and time variation of temperature with height, both the surface heating from insolation and the disturbance of upper level of inversion layer was influenced the disappearance of inversion layer. And the stability of surface temperature inversion layer generally belongs to the class of F, that of upper level temperature inversion layer commonly to the class of E.

  • Three numerical experiments are done using IAP(Institute of Atmospheric Physics) global spectral model(T42L9) to investigate the influence of the surface temperatures on the 7-day simulation. Particularly, the response of the subtropical High in summer to the variation of soil temperature and sea surface temperature(SST) was emphasized through a series of experiments. Experiment 1 uses the June climate data as the earth surface conditions. Experiment 2 is similar to Experiment 1 except for the soil surface temperature. Experiment 3 is the same as Experiment 1 except for the modified SST, which is much warmer than the June climate SST on the sea around the Korean peninsula. The main finding in 7-day simulation is that the response of the subtropical high in summer to the variation of the sell surface temperature was much more than that to the variation of the SST. It is implied that the proper treatment of sell surface temperature is more important than that of the SST for the better 7-day simulation of the subtropical high in summer.

  • Since the enzymatic degradation of microbial poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate] (P(3HB-co-3HV)) initially occurs by a surface erosion process, a degradation behavior could be controlled by the change of surface property. In order to control the rate of enzymatic degradation, plasma gas discharge and blending techniques were used to modify the surface of microbial P(3HB-co-3HV). The surface hydrophobic property of P(3HB-co-3HV) film was introduced by CF$_3$H plasma exposure. Also, the addition of small amount of polystyrene as a non-degradable polymer with lower surface energy to P(3HB-co-3HV) has been studied. The enzymatic degradation was carried out at 37 $^{\circ}C$ in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) in the presence of an extracellular PHB depolymerase purified from Alcaligenes facalis T1. Both results showed the significant retardation of enzymatic erosion due to the hydrophobicity and the enzyme inactivity of the fluorinated- and PS-enriched surface layers.

  • Monitoring of climate change and atmospheric environment by satellite measurements has been increased in recent years. In this study, nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) measurements from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) were compared with surface measurements over the Korean peninsula. $NO_2$ from OMI measurements showed high values and also showed seasonal variations such as high concentration in winter and low in summer over metropolitan areas while $NO_2$ concentration at national background station was low and did not clearly show seasonal variations. Surface measurements showed similar temporal and spatial variations to those of satellite measurement. The comparison between satellite measurements and surface measurements showed that the correlation between them was higher in urban area (r=0.64 at Seoul and r=0.63 at Daegu) than in national background stations (r=0.37 at Jeju) because the concentration in urban area was relatively high so that the variation of $NO_2$ concentration could be detected better than at national background stations by satellite. Satellite can effectively measure the emission and transport of pollutants with no limitations in spatial coverage.

  • In recent years, NF (nanofiltration) membrane has been receiving great attention for hardness removal and has begun to replace traditional lime soda ash softening process, particularly in Florida, USA, mainly due to less sludge production and easy operation. This study aimed to provide detailed surface characteristics of various commercial NF membranes by performing sophisticated surface analysis, which would help more fundamentally understand the performance of NF membranes. More specifically, a total of 7 NF membranes from top NF/RO manufacturers in the world were examined for basic performance tests, surface analysis, and fouling potential assessment. The results demonstrated that NF membranes are classified into two groups in terms of surface zeta potential; they are highly negatively charged ones, and neutral and/or less negatively charged ones. Their hydrophobicities, measured by contact angle, varied from hydrophilic to slightly hydrophobic ones. The AFM measurements showed various surface roughness, ranging from 23 nm (smooth) to 162 nm (rough) of average peak height. Lab-scale fouling experiments were performed using feedwater obtained from conventional water treatment plants in the province of Korea, and their results attempted to correlate to surface characteristics of NF membranes. However, unlike typical RO membranes, no clear correlation was found in this study, indicating that fouling mechanisms of NF membrane may be different from those of typical RO membranes, and both cake deposition and pore blocking mechanisms should be considered simultaneously.
