  • Railroad bridges form an integral part of railway infrastructure throughout the world. To accommodate increased axel loads, train speeds, and greater volumes of freight traffic, in the presence of changing structural conditions, the load carrying capacity and serviceability of existing bridges must be assessed. One way is through system identification of in-service railroad bridges. To dates, numerous researchers have reported system identification studies with a large portion of their applications being highway bridges. Moreover, most of those models are calibrated at global level, while only a few studies applications have used globally and locally calibrated model. To reach the global and local calibration, both ambient vibration tests and controlled tests need to be performed. Thus, an approach for system identification of a railroad bridge that can be used to assess the bridge in global and local sense is needed. This study presents system identification of a railroad bridge using free vibration data. Wireless smart sensors are employed and provided a portable way to collect data that is then used to determine bridge frequencies and mode shapes. Subsequently, a calibrated finite element model of the bridge provides global and local information of the bridge. The ability of the model to simulate local responses is validated by comparing predicted and measured strain in one of the diagonal members of the truss. This research demonstrates the potential of using measured field data to perform model calibration in a simple and practical manner that will lead to better understanding the state of railroad bridges.

  • While coupling wastewater treatment with microalgal bioenergy production is very promising, new approaches are needed to enhance microalgal growth and lipid accumulation in wastewater. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of iron on the growth, nutrient removal, and lipid accumulation of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 in both artificial wastewater and domestic secondary effluents. When increasing the iron concentration from 0 to 2 mg/l in the artificial wastewater, the biomass production of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 increased from 0.17 to 0.54 g/l; the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency increased from 15.7% and 80.6% to 97.0% and 99.2%, respectively; and the lipid content was enhanced 84.2%. The relationship between the carrying capacity/maximal population growth rate of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 and the initial iron concentration were also in accordance with the Monod model. Furthermore, when increasing the iron concentration to 2 mg/l in four different domestic secondary effluent samples, the lipid content and lipid production of Scenedesmus sp. LX1 was improved by 17.4-33.7% and 21.5-41.8%, respectively.

  • This study is directed for the development of rational rating models for realistic safety assessment and the computer rating system for highway bridges. For this purpose, the conventional rating system is considerably improved in appropriate way, and a rational rating system based on the reliabilty method is proposed to estimate safety of deteriorated bridges by using only the visual inspection data or the statistical data available. In addition. the rating system which can assess the realistic allowable passing tonnage of military vehicles in case of the military operations is also presented. From this study, it is known that the presented rating system and the computer program BRS(Bridge Rating System) provide an effective tool which can handle the degree of deterioration and various uncertainities of the bridge systematically. so it can be used widely for assessment of safety and load carrying capacity of existing deteriorated or damaged bridges.

  • To develop the Korean-Version-Improvement program for ordinary people, we investigate how Korean-High-Intelligent people use their cognitive function, intellectual capacity and Intelligent Quotient test. Using Mensa iq test, we classify intelligent examination tool into various components; visual, geometrical component and cognitive interpretation component. Also we organized each component, got database of intelligent subjects sample, classified itemized availability. Based on these things, we prove efficiency of intelligent examination tool. We found out that high intelligent people showed high Intelligent Index using visual cognitive stimulation with cognitive function when subjects were exposed to certain situation; solving the problem. This intelligent examination tool is low price and safe and easily carrying out with personal computer. If we develop intelligence quotient examination customized with mental retardation populations, a variety of subjects will improve their cognition with efficiency and inexpensively.

  • Korean goral (Nemorhaedus caudatus raddeanus) is an endangered species in Korea, and the rugged terrain of the Sorksan National Park $(373km^2)$ is a critical habitat for the species. Since the goral population is threatened by habitat fragmentation, it is essential to establish a reserve for the isolated goral population. The objective of this study was to propose a reserve for Korean goral in the national Park We employed habitat suitability model, habitat capability model, and the concept of minimum viable population. The results of the study were as follows. First, the carrying capacity and optimal density of gorals in the national park were projected to be 449 gorals, and 251 gorals, respectively Second, since only one patch was projected to satisfy the criteria of minimum viable population (50 individuals/during 50 years), the long term extinction possibility of gorals in the site would be very high. Finally, the patch that satisfy the minimum viable population of goral was proposed as the core zone of the goral reserve and adjacent patches were included as buffer zones.

  • Loads on offshore structures are largely transferred to the bracing members in the form of axial forces. The detrimental effects of imperfections on compressive strength are well recognized. Damage in the members of offshore structures would significantly affect the compressive behavior of the members. As a result, such damages may also affect the ability of the structure to withstand the functional and environmental loads. It is important to be able to assess the residual strength of damaged members quickly and accurately. This will help operators to make the decision whether the member has to be repaired or not. In this study, a series of calculation is performed to study the effects of different parameters on the behavior of such damaged members under axial load. And the results of analysis are compared with those of experiment.

  • This study presents physiological rates of respiration and excretion, clearance rate, and assimilation efficiency of the ark shell Scapharca broughtonii, determined during 2007 from specimens collected in Gamak Bay on the south coast of Korea. Physiological parameters were measured monthly under static, laboratory controlled conditions with ambient conditions, and measurements were performed seasonally in order to estimate scope for growth and its probable sources of variation. Temperature directly influenced respiration and excretion. Clearance rates showed a tendency to be low during May-August, which is a period of gametogenesis. Assimilation efficiency was not significantly different seasonally and was independent of the concentration of chlorophyll a. The scope for growth was negative during high-temperature months (July-August), reflecting the high temperature and low clearance rate, and had its highest positive values during spring and autumn. The energy budget or growth potential of bivalves has been applied to other economically important species. Data on the physiological parameters and scope for growth of S. broughtonii obtained in this study will be used to assess the carrying capacity for ark shell cultivation.

  • A high-efficiency simplified modelling approach is proposed for investigating the nonlinear responses of reinforced concrete linings of shield tunnels. Material and geometric nonlinearities are considered in the analysis of the lining structures undergoing large deformation before ultimately losing the load-carrying capacity. A beam-spring element model is developed to capture the force-transfer mechanism between lining segments and radial joints. The developed model is validated by comparing analyzed results to experimental results of a single-ring lining structure under two loading conditions: the ground overloading and the lateral unloading respectively. The results show that the lining structure under the lateral unloading due to excavation on the both sides of the tunnel is more vulnerable compared to the case of ground overloading on the top of the tunnel. A parameter study is conducted and results indicate that the lateral pressure coefficient has the greatest influence on the behaviour of the lining structure.

  • For fishery stock assessment and optimum sustainable yield of anchovy in Korea, surplus production(SP) models and a maximum entropy(ME) model are employed in this paper. For determining appropriate models, five traditional SP models-Schaefer model, Schnute model, Walters and Hilborn model, Fox model, and Clarke, Yoshimoto and Pooley (CYP) model- are tested for effort and catch data of anchovy that occupies 7% in the total fisheries landings of Korea. Only CYP model of five SP models fits statistically significant at the 10% level. Estimated intrinsic growth rates are similar in both CYP and ME models, while environmental carrying capacity of the ME model is quite greater than that of the CYP model. In addition, the estimated maximum sustainable yield(MSY), 213,287 tons in the ME model is slightly higher than that of CYP model (198,364 tons). Biomass for MSY in the ME model, however, is calculated 651,000 tons which is considerably greater than that of the CYP model (322,881 tons). It is meaningful in that two models are compared for noting some implications about any significant difference of stock assessment and their potential strength and weakness.
