  • According to the 2005 Korean census, the 65 and over population now exceeds 9.5% of the total population and is growing rapidly. Meeting elderly environment and care needs of this rapidly growing segment of the population becomes a major challenge for public policies and planners. Since great deal amount of elderly will reside in their houses, aging in place concept becomes important. For the success of aging in place, the quality of individual house unit, community support systems, and quality of senior center of the community are crucial. Since elderly environments and facilities serve not only medical and/or care programs but also social activity program in aging society, senior centers need to promote social activities and other care programs. The purpose of this study is to analyze characteristics of environmental affordance of a well received senior center in Tokyo, Japan. In order to analyze the characteristics, Murtha & Lee user benefit criteria and Lawton's environmental affordance approaches were used. As results, design characteristics and interior elements which provide environmental affordance were enumerated by type of space. • This study comparatively examined the environmental affordance of elementary children's rooms between the lower and the higher grades, and investigated the affects of the rooms'affordance on children's satisfaction of the rooms. Survey questionnaires were given to 412 elementary school children(221 in the lower grades and 191 in the higher grades), including their parents. Frequency analysis, $x^{k}$ -tests, t-tests, correlation tests, and regression analysis were mainly employed for the data analysis. The findings indicated that the environmental affordance of the children's rooms differed in each group in terms of the four dimensions: Social interaction, privacy, safety, and uniqueness. Meanwhile, the more environmental affordance was sufficient, the higher degree of the satisfaction was showed. In the lower grades, conveniency, accessibility, social interaction, and uniqueness were influenced their satisfaction of the rooms, whereas social interaction, conveniency, order, and privacy were affected the children's satisfaction in the higher grades.

  • The Affordance, discussed in the theory of ecological perception of environmental psychology, is the concept of perception that deals with inter-relationship between environment and human. It is a theory seeking for gradual evolution, with the change of user experience behavior and the space, by getting feed-backs from the analysis of perception of characteristics of 3-dimensional space and the user as moving entity. Although there has been many attempts to define the Affordance and apply its concept to the architecture, now there's a need to identify the Affordance in the real architectural space, represent Affordance of space and the user inter-relationship in the architecture and apply its design specifically, Thus, the purpose of this study is to present the methodology of applying Affordance in architectural space design by identifying the Affordance of space concept of human experience behavior in the architectural space and analyze its recognition process.

  • Korean population is now aging at an unprecedented rate. Fertility decline together with rapid improvements in life expectancy is the dominant demographic trend. As human life and housing environment are inseparably related to each other, the importance of conditions of housing environment for active aging among seniors has been received considerable attention as vital ones to expand the independency period of seniors. The purpose of this case study is to identify relationships between environmental affordance and perceived holistic health of the active elderly living in a retirement community located in Seoul. With spending time personally in the community to observe their lives, the researcher could be in close rapport with the residents. After the period of getting familiar with each other, in-depth individual interview and focus group interview were conducted and then, qualitative analysis was completed. As a result, general evidences showed that perceived seniors' health on the whole was improved physically, socially, and mentally by moving into the community providing appropriate environment affordance with the older adults. The study presents that retirement relocation into an improper environment may be a negative challenge, however, it may positively influence on the health and well-being of those who live there if the environment properly supports seniors‘ needs physically and socially

  • In contemporary architecture, Environment is not just a non-objective space. It is an experimental space where physical space and the principal result of interaction and order have been granted in symbolic, introverted space. Therefore, Yokohama International Port Terminal characteristics that appear in the architectural space, the nature of human desires and reveal the value of user-centered criteria to classify the type of response characteristics of the affordance are as follows; First, the experience response in the affordance reaction is when users reaction is multiple in theenvironment. Second, the evolution of organic reactions in a public space system is that it shows the spatial characteristics of the functional relationships. Third, the organic of space that can be seen through cultural practice in the inside and outside of the space could be explained as a perceptual response. It can be an opportunity to analyzed and develop in a various forms of space in environmental design if we understands the spatial characteristics of FOA's Yokohama International Port Terminal and applied end user spatial reaction analysis that shows an affordance relationship study.

  • I suggested the design learning environment based on affordance concept approach for supporting and improving learners' behavior and outcome for convergent design education in this study. The design learning space should be applied teaching and learning activity, especially learners' behavior, physical space condition to support the design thinking process. The design learning space needs openness, individuality and connectivity to support the learners' behavioral to immerse, participate, cooperate, understand, think and fulfill the design thinking process. The composition principles of the learning environment for convergent design education supports communication and collaboration among members for independence and interaction. The spaces for design research and teaching needs high privacy while facilitating visual communications through special materials and wall structure design. Also, for connectivity to improve the learners' physical and visual contact, the environment of the classrooms requires flexibility and mobility by providing an open space integrating unit cells for realizing learning purpose. These are provided by formed of an open structure for inducing visual communication and physical contact to involve the design activities and the mutual interchange.
