  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acid fog on the rust formation behavior of weathering steel (SMA50) which is used in uncoated bridges. Weathering steel didn't form the passive film under the environment of acid fog(pH5,6), whereas the environment of distilled water formed the protective oxide film. Therefore, the construction of weathering steel under the environment extremely exposed to SOx and NOx which are the main compositions of acid fog is not adequate. Fatigue limits of weathering steel under acid fog environment are remarkably decreased as compared with environment of distilled water. The corrosive constituents in acid fog has piled up the corrosion products on specimen surface and generated the corrosion pits. Because of the high stress concentration arising at this corrosion pit, relatively low fatigue limits were obtained for acid fog specimens.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the electrically conductive properties of epoxy nanocomposites exposed to an acidic environment under various mechanical loads. For simultaneous assessment of the acidic environment and mechanical load on the electrical conductivity of the samples, the samples with and without carbon nanotubes were exposed to the acidic environment under three different loading conditions for 20 days. Then, the aged samples' strength and flexural stiffness degradation under crude oil and bending stress were measured using a three-point flexural test. The aged samples in the acidic environment and under 80 percent of their intact ultimate strength revealed a 9% and 26% reduction of their electrical conductivity for samples with and without CNTs, respectively. The presence of nanoparticles declined flexural stiffness by about 16.39%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the specimen were used to evaluate the dispersion quality of CNTs. The results of this study can be exploited in constructing conductive composite electrodes to be used in petroleum environments such as crude oil electrostatic tanks.

  • Very long life fatigue tests were carried out on 16Mn steel base metal and its welded joint by using the ultrasonic fatigue testing technique. Specimen shapes (round and plate) were considered for both the base metal and welded joint. The results show that the specimens present different S-N curve characteristics in the region of $10^5-10^9$ cycles. The round specimens showed continuously decreasing tendency while plate specimens showed a steep decreasing step and an asymptotic horizontal one. The fatigue strength of round specimen was found higher than plate specimen. The fatigue strength of as-welded joint was 45.0% of the base material for butt joint and 40% for cruciform as-welded joint. It was found that fracture can still occur in butt joint beyond $5{\times}10^6$ cycles. The cruciform joint has a fatigue limit in the very long life fatigue regime ($10^7-10^9$ cycles). Fatigue strength of butt as-welded joint was much higher as compared to cruciform as-welded joint. Improvement in fatigue strength of welded joint was found due to UPT. The observation of fracture surface showed crack mainly initiated from welded toe at fusion areas or geometric discontinuity sites at the surface in butt joint and from welded toe in cruciform joint.

  • Calcium sulfaluminate (CSA) was synthesized to improve the shrinkage of OPC. In this study, the setting time, the compressive strength and the length change ratio were confirmed by replacing the synthesized CSA with OPC by 10% and 13% by 16%. In the case of shrinkage-reducing type cement, formation of Ca-Al-$H_2$-based hydrate was activated. Therefore, the setting time was shortened. The compressive strength of the shrinkage - reducing type cement is comparable to that of OPC after 7 days' strength. However, shrinkage reducing type cement showed improved initial strength compared to OPC. The length change ratio was found to be improved by drying shrinkage from -0.075% to -0.047% on the 28th day.

  • Bimodal flocculation describes the aggregation and breakage processes of the flocculi (or primary particles) and the flocs in the water environment. Bimodal flocculation causes bimodal size distribution with the two separate peaks of the flocculi and the flocs. Extracellular polymeric substances and ionic species common in the water environment increase the occurrence of bimodal flocculation and flocculi-floc size distribution, under the flocculation mechanisms of electrostatic attraction and polymeric bridging. This study investigated bimodal flocculation and flocculi-floc size distribution, with respect to the extracellular polymeric substance concentration and ionic strength in the kaolinite-containing suspension. The batch flocculation tests comprising 0.12 g/L of kaolinite showed that the highest flocculation potential occurred at the lowest xanthan gum (as extracellular polymeric substances) concentration, under all the ionic strengths of 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1 M NaCl. Also, it was important to note that the higher ionic strength resulted in the higher flocculation potential, at all the xanthan gum concentrations. The bimodal flocculation and flocculi-floc size distribution became apparent in the experimental conditions, which had low and intermediate flocculation potential. Besides the polymeric bridging flocculation, steric stabilization increased the flocculi mass fraction against the floc mass fraction, thereby developing the bimodal size distribution.

  • Energetically-modified material using reject fly ash (RFA), generated from thermal power plants, was manufactured to investigate the effect of the material on the physical and chemical characteristics of cement mortar. In order to modify reject fly ash, a vibration mill was used. Particle size, grain shape, and crystal structure of the ash were analyzed. Then, the compressive strength of the mortar using energetically-modified reject fly ash (ERFA) was measured. Microstructure and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were also used in the analysis. As the replacement rate of ERFA increased, the value of the compressive strength tended to decrease. However, it was found that the compressive strength values of 7 and 28 days-cured specimens were higher than those of conventional ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortar with 10 % replacement rate condition.

  • Plate has cutout inner bottom and girder and Door etc. in hull construction absence is used much, and this is strength in case must be situated, but establish in region that high stress interacts sometimes fatally in region that there is no big problem usually by purpose of weight reduction, a person and freight movement, piping etc.. Because cutout‘s existence is positioning in this place, and, elastic bucking strength by load causes large effect in ultimate strength. Therefore, perforated plate elastic bucking strength and ultimate strength is one of important design criteria to decide structural elements size at early structure design step of a ship. Therefore, we need reasonable & reliable design formula for elastic bucking strength of the perforated plate. The author computed numerically ultimate strength change about several aspect ratios, cutout dimension, and plate thickness by using ANSYS Finite element analysis code based on finite element method in this paper.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the general levels of family strength, self-determination and life satisfaction perceived by university students. Also, this study aimed to verify the mediating effect of self-determination between family strength and life satisfaction. The subjects of this study were 350 university students in Korea and surveyed by self-reported questionnaires. The data was analysed by descriptive statistics, correlation, regression analysis, and Sobel test using SPSS 20.0. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, the levels of family strength, self-determination, life satisfaction perceived by university students were found to be higher than the middle score. Second, in the process of verification for seeking mediating effect of students' self-determination between family strength and life satisfaction, step1 showed that family strength revealed significant effects on life satisfaction level(${\beta}=.62$, p<.001). And in step2, family strength affected students' self-determination significantly(${\beta}=.47$, p<.001). Step3 which used family strength(${\beta}=.33$, p<.001) and self-determination(${\beta}=.62$, p<.001) together showed that self-determination had mediating effects between family strength and life satisfaction of students. It was proved significantly by Sobel test(Z=8.83, p<.001). Therefore, in order to enhance life satisfaction of university students, integrative services and systematic intervention programs as family education are required.

  • Increasing of waste FRP (fiber reinforced plastics) has caused environmental problems. Recently, the technology of making fibers from waste FRP, which can be used to reinforce the concrete, was developed and the reinforced concretes were tested to study the structural performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the powder, obtained together with F-fiber from the waste FRP, on the compressive strength and the fire resistance performance as in the high strength concrete. Strength tests show that the use of recycled FRP powder does not reduce the compressive strength of high strength concrete if the volume fraction of FRP powder is less than 0.7%. Electric furnace test results also show that the use of recycled FRP powder may increase the fire resistance performance of high strength concrete significantly.

  • Liquid natural gas is stored and transported inside cargo tank which is made of specially designed cryogenic materials such as 9% Ni steel, Al5083-O alloy and SUS304 and so on. The materials have to keep excellent ductile characteristics under the cryogenic environment, down to -163oC, in order to avoid the catastrophic sudden brittle fracture during the operation condition. High manganese steel is considered to be the promising alternative material that can replace the commonly used materials mentioned above owing to its cost effectiveness. In line with this industrial need, the mechanical properties of the high manganese steel under both room and cryogenic environment were investigated in this study focused on its tensile and fatigue behavior. In terms of the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strength of the base material of the high manganese steel was comparable to the existing cryogenic materials, but it turned out to be undermatched one when welding is involved in. The fatigue strength of the high manganese steel under room temperature was as good as other cryogenic materials, but under cryogenic environment, slightly less than others though better than Al 5083-O alloy.
