Island Biogeographic Study on Distribution Pattern of the Naturalized Plant Species on the Uninhabited Islands in Korea (우리나라 무인도서의 귀화식물 분포에 대한 섬생물지리적 연구)

  • For the ecosystem conservation and the effective management of naturalized plant species on 261 uninhabited islands distributed in southern and western sea in Korea, we tested the interrelationship between the pattern of distribution and dispersal of the naturalized plant species and the factors of geographical environment of uninhabited islands such as island area, distance from mainland, latitude, longitude, human impacts and habitat diversity. Out of 261 uninhabited islands surveyed, 106 species of the naturalized plants occurred on 229 (87.7%) islands. The naturalized plant species per island averaged 4.6 (SD=4.07) species, and plant species number were higher in southern group (87 species) than in western group (64 species) of islands. Plant species occurred on more than 100 islands were three species : Rumex crispus L. (153 islands), Erigeron annuus Pers. (130 islands), and Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronquist (121 islands), the highest grade '5' of 'degree of naturalization'. The occurrence frequency of 106 naturalized plant species was significantly correlated with island area, distance to mainland, strength of human impacts, and latitude and longitude. Correlation coefficient (r=-0.330) between occurrence frequency and distance from mainland was higher than between occurrence frequency and island area (r=-0.182). The result of path analysis confirmed that plant species number was significantly affected by island area p=0.336) and distance from mainland (p=-0.490), but in this analysis the effect of human impacts on plant species number was very weak (p=0.003). On the basis of these results, strategies on the conservation of ecosystem and the management of naturalized plant species in the uninhabited islands of Korea were discussed.

Effects of Paper Bag Coated Calcium on the Calcium Concentration, Lenticel Development, and Quality in 'Chuhwangbae' Pear Fruits (칼슘이 코팅된 봉지 괘대가 '추황배' 과실의 칼슘함량, 과점 발달 및 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In a pear fruit 'Chuhwangbae' was investigated the effect of the calcium-coated double paper bag on the physical properties of the paper bag, micro meteorological phenomena, and calcium contents in quality of fruit. The calcium-coated paper bag, compared with official paper bags, did not give any effect on light transmission ratio and tensile strength. The change of the inside relative humidity of the paper bag was a little compared with conventional paper bags, but there was no difference in temperature. The contents of the accumulated calcium of the pericarp was remarkably greater than conventional paper bags during the period of 65 days to 160 days after the full bloom, but the flesh remarkably increased at 160 days. The calcium content per concentration of calcium coating greatly increased in 12% of yellow double paper bags and 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp, and in 3% of yellow double paper bags and 6, 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp. As a result of treatment of a radioactive isotope, the amount of accumulated calcium in the pericarp continued until 60 hours after treatment, but there was no difference in the calcium amount between the flesh and no-treatment pericarp. As to the hardness of fruits at the time of harvest, there was no difference in the concentration in case of a yellow double bags. But newspaper double paper bags 6, 12% was significantly difference. Soluble solid remarkably increased in yellow double paper bags 6, 9% and yellow double paper bags 3, 6, 9%. Also, it did not effect on changes of the pericarp, fruit weight and the color of the pericarp.

Review of the Structural Shape for Aft Transition Ring of Submarine (잠수함 함미 트랜지션 링 구조 형상에 대한 고찰)

  • Submarines, which have been called an invisible force, are strategic underwater weapon systems that perform missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and high payoff target strikes with the advantage of underwater covertness. A submarine should be able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of the deep sea. In this respect, the submarine pressure hull, as the main structural system to resist the external pressure corresponding to the submerged depth, should ensure the survivability from hazards and threats such as leakage, fires, shock, explosion, etc. To do this, the initial scantling of the submarine pressure hull must be calculated appropriately in the concept design phase. The shape of the aft transition ring varies according to its connection with the submarine aft end conical structure, pressure hull cylindrical part, and non-pressure hull of the submarine; the design of the aft transition ring should not only take into account stress flow and connectivity but also the cost increase due to the increased man-hours of its complex geometry. Therefore, trade-off studies based on the four different shapes of the aft transition ring are carried out considering both the review of the structural strength through nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) and economic feasibility by reviewing the estimations of the manufacturing working days and material costs. Finally, the most rational structural aft transition ring shape for a submarine amongst four reviewed types was proposed.

  • MS(Mild Steel), HTS(High Tensile Steel), HYS(High Yield Steel), AL(Aluminum Alloy) and Composite Materials are used for vessels. Steel Materials are mostly used for vessels because body of a ship have to perform the basic functions such as watertight, preserving the strength and supporting the equipments. The vessels primarily carry out a mission at ocean, so that body of a ship is necessarily rusted. There are several methods to protect the corrosion of vessels such as painting, SACP(sacrificial anode cathodic protection) and ICCP(impressed current cathodic protection). For the sacrificial anode cathodic protection, Al and Zn alloys are normally used. Heavy metals are added to the Al and Zn Alloys for improving the corrosion properties but they are so harmful to the human and environment. Therefore, the use of these heavy metals is strictly regulated in the world. In this paper, Al and Zn Alloys are made by adding the trace elements(Ma, Ca, Ce and Sn) which is not harmful to the human and environment. SEM, XRD, Potentiodynamic Polarization test and Current Efficiency test are conducted for evaluation of Al and Zn Alloys. As a result of the experiment, Al-3Zn-0.6Sn and Zn-3Sn Alloys are more efficient than other Alloys.

  • This paper aims to link the development strategy of a local government(Guri-si, Kyunggi-do) to a spatial decision support system that is in the early stages of implementation and testing. Spatial Decision for a local governmental authority typically involves multiple stakeholders. To any specific regional problem, stakeholders often have various levels of knowledge and experiences about it, that yield conflicting views. In this point of view, the enhanced access to information can bring the decision process to solve the problem throughout more public participation. Recently, Urban development study was required to improve the decision making of public participation form. This study aim to investigate an analysis local government of Guri-si, can be supported as the suggestion of decision making system. Guri-si has been argued that it would improve citizen's life quality intent theme 'by historical tourism in general dimension' promote region identity, environment friendly and transportational strength, by reflecting various plan of urban development and it executed strategy. There are increasing interest in citizen participation and practical using of policy decision making to respond to uncertain environment and systematic exploration of local government. Focused on the contents of public participation decision making, it is important to investigate how to analysis urban development strategy and geographic information relationship for useful. The paper concludes with a discussion of current issues encountered during development and implementation of spatial decision making(or support) system for the local administrative authority.

Application of Granulated Coal Ash for Remediation of Coastal Sediment (연안 저질 개선을 위한 석탄회 조립물의 활용)

  • This paper aims to explain the safety assessment and remediation mechanism of Granulated Coal Ash (GCA) as a material for the remediation of coastal sediments and to evaluate the improvement of the sediment in Kaita Bay, where GCA was applied. The concentrations of heavy metal contained in GCA and the dissolved amounts of heavy metal from GCA satisfied the criteria for soil and water pollution in Japan. The mechanisms on the remediation of coastal sediments using GCA is summarized as follows; (1) removal of phosphate and hydrogen sulfide (2) neutralization of acidic sediment (3) oxidation of reductive sediment (4) increase of water permeability (5) increase of soil strength (6) material for a base of seagrass. From the results obtained from the field experiment carried out in Kaita Bay, it was clarified that GCA is a promizing material for remediation of coastal sediment. This remediation technology can contribute to promote waste reduction in society and to decrease cost of coastal sediment remediation by applying GCA in other polluted coastal areas.

A Study on Inspection Status of Port State Control and Improvement Measures in Korea (우리나라 항만국통제 점검 실태와 문제점 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Based on the data of PSC information management system of MOF(Ministry of oceans and fisheries) and APCIS(Asia-Pacific Computerized Information System) of Tokyo-MOU information system, the result of the evaluation on the reality of PSC was done, and base on 2009, it showed a trend of decrease in every DFR(Deficiency Rate) and DTR(Detention Rate). But for vessels built for more than 30 years, flags of convenience vessels, RO-RO ferry and general cargo vessel, small size vessels with gross tonnage less than 1,000 ton showed a high DFR and DTR. Each harbours is classified by the total harbours' average DFR which was 82.5 % and the average DTR was 5.1 %, excluding the Jeju harbour, showing a hugh deviation for classification of each harbour. Classification of each harbour has to be inspected by PSC and it showed a great unbalance of the number of vessels for each territory for inspection. the biggest problem with our country's PSC, where it was pointed out by the PSCO was lack of workers and independent inspection by just one worker. To strength the substantiality of the inspection of our country is to have concentrated inspection on the high risk cautious vessels, forming a human network each classified by four different sectors of the area, recalculating the amount of assignment of inspection classified by each harbour and securing workforce the PSCO improvements are necessary.

A Study on Safety and Performance of Rope Cutter for Ship's Propeller (선박추진기 로프절단장치의 안전성 및 효용성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the safety and effectiveness of ope cutter, developed to prevent frequent accident propeller windingness at sea. First, we calculated the bolt strength of the three types of rope cutting devices used in the experiment and the torsional stresses on the shafting system theoretical equation and the finite element method. As a result, the bolts used in the rope cutter confirmed from the viewpoint of safety life design and fail safe design. Also, safety satisfactory because of the small effect on the shaft system when locking up. Experiments were carried out to cut ropes and fishing nets from the sea using the ships equipped with three types of rope cutters verified to be safe. As a result, ropes of 20 to 50 mm in thickness were generally cut. It was found that the cutting efficiency of a rope cutter attached to shafting decreased when cutting thick ropes.

Feasibility Study of Different Biochars as Adsorbent for Cadmium and Lead

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different biochars on the removal of heavy metals from aqueous media. The experiment was carried out in aqueous solutions containing $200mg\;CdL^{-1}$ or $200mg\;PbL^{-1}$ using two different biochars derived from soybean stover and orange peel (20 mg Cd or $Pbg^{-1}$ biochar). After shaking for 24 hours, biochars were filtered out, and Cd and Pb in the filtrate were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS). In order to provide information regarding metal binding strength on biochars, sequential extraction was performed by modified SM&T (formerly BCR). The results showed that 70~100% of initially added Cd and Pb was adsorbed on biochars and removed from aqueous solution. The removal rate of Pb (95%, 100%) was higher than that of Cd (70%, 91%). In the case of Cd, orange peel derived biochar (91%) showed higher adsorption rate than soybean stover derived biochar (70%). Cd was adsorbed on the biochar mainly in exchangeable and carbonates fraction (1st phase). In contrast, Pb was adsorbed on it mainly in the form of Fe-Mn oxides and residual fraction (2nd and 4th phase). The existence of Cd and Pb as a form of surface-precipitated complex was also observed on the surfaces of biochars detected by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDAX).

Performance Evaluation for Dry Shrinkage of Dry Mortar Using Artificial Aggregate Made from Circulating Fludized Bed Combution Ash and Modified CaO Type Expansive Admixture (개질 CaO 팽창재 활용 CFBC 인공잔골재 건조 모르타르의 건조수축 성능평가에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of CFBC artificial fine aggregate as a substitute for natural aggregate used in dry mortar. The basic performance of the flow, compressive strength and dry shrinkage of the dry mortar was evaluated. Four types of test dry mortar specimens using natural aggregate without expansion admixture, a specimen with modified CaO expansion admixture and natural aggregate, a specimen with modified CaO expansion admixture and CFBC artificial fine aggregate, and a specimen using CFBC artificial fine aggregate without modified CaO expansion admixture were evaluated respectively. As a result of evaluation of drying shrinkage performance at 20th day of age, the dry shrinkage performance of the specimen using modified CaO expansion admixture was found to be the highest at $250{\times}10^{-6}$. On the other hand, the specimen containing the modified CaO expansion admixture with CFBC artificial aggregate exhibited a shrinkage of $410{\times}10^{-6}$, and the drying shrinkage of specimen using natural fine aggregate without expansion admixture was $450{\times}10^{-6}$. When the modified CaO expansion material was used, and exhibited performance equal to or higher than that of the shrinkage-drying property.
