  • This study aims at proposing a sound and sustainable development direction of an residential environment by analyzing testimonies of residents who lived in Park Hill flats or their surround at Sheffield City in the United Kingdom. The results are obtained through the analysis on a residential environment of Park Hill flats, opinions of the residents on its refurbishment, and effects of the building on the residential environment. The block of Park Hill flats was a community with a strong unity and solidarity, but that became increasingly a slum by the decline of the physical and social environment since the 1980s. In particular, it was identified that the deterioration of the social environment than that of the physical environment was a major cause of the decline. Nevertheless, it was found that "streets in the sky", the concept applied in Park Hill, played a key role in activating the community in the apartment complex. However, that street system in the complex has caused noise, poor security, and invasion of privacy. If such problems are solved, the streets in the sky will be a meaningful alternative for community activation and then ensuring sustainability in Korean residential environments that lost the function of the community.

  • Recently, residents have been spending almost 90% of their time indoors, which presents a higher risk from inhalation of pollutants than when spending time outdoors. Therefore, controlling indoor air quality became important. It is reported that the lung diseases and mortality for occupants are increased when there is high density of ozone which is one of the pollutants among the indoor air. In addition, the reactions between ozone and building materials produce VOCs and formaldehyde. The studies to eliminate the ozone by building materials have been actively investigated. However, ozone removal and secondary pollutants from ozone reactions with building materials have not been reported in Korea. For this reason, the aim of this study is to introduce ozone removal by HVAC filters, various building materials, and eco-friendly building materials including the quantity of secondary pollutant emissions.

  • Owing to an increase in the air tightness of recent buildings, the natural ventilation rate was significantly lowered and the removal of accumulated moisture became difficult in these buildings. The hygrothermal performance of these buildings should be carefully considered to provide comfortable indoor environment by removing the moisture condensation risk and the mold growth potential. In this study, hygrothermal performance of two selected wall structures was investigated based on WUFI simulation program. The results displayed that the indoor temperature had impact on the moisture accumulation in the insulation layer for both modeled walls, showing that lower indoor temperature resulted in higher moisture accumulation, especially in the wood frame structure. Also, the yearly moisture accumulation profile exhibited a downward shift throughout the year by adding a vapour retarder with a lower sd-value. In addition, both of the two walls have condensation risk in winter, due to low temperature level. The wood frame structure has a bigger fluctuation and higher condensation risk than the concrete structure.

  • As the instability of international societies on the energy resources has increasingly been deepened due to excessive use of fossil fuels, the importance of energy saving and global environment protection has highlighted, So the interests in environment-friendly and stable new & renewable energy have been dramatically increased. The studies on reconstructing the old-fashioned towns economically, socially and physically have been also significantly increased. In this urban regeneration, renewable-energy using systems were aggressively applied to overcome the energy and environmental problems of the existing towns. There have been many of studies on the compound applications of the renewable-energy using systems in the advanced countries while they are insufficient in Korea. As a preliminary study of urban renewable-energy using system development, this paper surveyed the foreign cases applied to key technologies such as geothermal energy, hydrogen fuel cell and bioenergy among the renewable-energies in urban built environment.

  • The study Is Intended to investigate and analyze the system and practice that have been applied to Interior Architecture, comparing with a number of similar foreign cases, in an attempt to seek the way toward its development as well as to come up with the solution for enhancing the competitiveness, thereby making a recommendation on how to create the desirable work environment of Interior Architecture down the road. The conclusion and recommendation we have made is highlighted as follow. Among the practical or procedural challenges in the process of improving work environment of Interior Architecture, development of current national technical qualification system in a way of further detailing the categories of Ki-sul-sa(highest engineer grade) or Ki-neung-jang(highest technician grade) as part of measures aimed at gradual approaching for improvement of design fees and rates or supervision fees will be very crucial, that calls for close coordination with the Ministry of Labor and Human Resources Development Service of Korea. In a bid to upgrade the Interior Architecture to become the part of knowledge-based industry, amendment to Korean Standard Industrial Classification along with Standard Classification of Occupations and Academic Classification will be essential, and moreover with the attitude of reflection and self-improvement, the endeavors to be able to deal with the revision of existing laws and regulations in a consistent way and manner, by forming a joint committee among the three Interior Architecture-related organizations(KOSID, ICC, KlID), will be more than important.

  • The information system of corporations are facing a new environment expressed by miniaturization, decentralization and Open System. It is therefore of utmost importance for corporations to adapt flexibly th such new environment by providing for corresponding changes to their existing information systems. The objectives of this study are to identify this new environment faced by today′s information system and develop effective methods for data resource management under this new environment. In this study, it is assumed that the new environment faced by information systems can be specified as Distributed Computing Environment, and in order to achieve such system, presents Client/server architecture as its representative computing structure, This study defines Client/server architecture as a computing architecture which specialize the fuctionality of the client system and the server system in order to have an application distribute and perform cooperative processing at the best platform. Furthermore, from among the five structures utilized in Client/server architecture for distribution and cooperative processing of application between server and client this study presents two different data management methods under the Client/server environment; one is "Remote Data Management Method" which uses file server or database server and. the other is "Distributed Data Management Method" using distributed database management system. The result of this study leads to the conclusion that in the client/server environment although distributed application is assumed, the data could become centralized (in the case of file server or database server) or decentralized (in the case of distributed database system) and the data management method through a distributed database system where complete responsibility and powers with respect to control of data used by the user are given not only is it more adaptable to modern flexible corporate environment, but in terms of system operation, it presents a more efficient data management alternative compared to existing data management methods in terms of cutting costs.

  • In the last century, mainly our cultures destroyed a lot of ourselves as well as of our natural environment by deterioration, pollution and exploitation. Building activities are for a third responsible for these disasters and they are fully the reason for the growing Sick Building Syndrome. In result, Materials of the building should be derived as much as possible from nature, and walls should be made of yellow soil, or of bricks made from yellow soil The adobe can easily have larger or smaller dimensions, and different thickness as weil, according to the purpose for which they are meant, and the structural load-bearing function they have to fulfill. In spite of the importance of clay, research or experiment of clay has been quite weak. However, in stead of endowing the clay with the value as natural architectural material, we want to evaluate it as an important element of the environment.
