  • Acoustic holography exhibits the spatial distribution of sound pressure in time or frequency domain. The obtained picture often contains far more than what we need in practice. For example. when we need to know only the locations and overall propagation pattern of sound sources. a method to show only what we need has to be introduced. One way of obtaining the necessary information is to use envelope in space. The spatial envelope is a spatially slowly-varying amplitude of acoustic waves which contains the information of sources' location. A spatial modulation method has been theoretically developed to get a spatial envelope. By applying the spatial envelope. not only the necessary information is obtained but also computation time is reduced during the process of holography. The spatial envelope is verified as an effective visualization scheme in time domain by being applied to complicated sound fields.

  • The electronic subband structure and the envelope wave function for three types of superlattices are calculated with a new method. Comparison of the results of this method with those of other methods has proved the validity of this method. In particullas, the results of saw-toothed superlattices show that the change of the effective mass with position must be considered. Therefore this method can be easily applied to arbitrily shaped superlattices and multiple quantum well structures.

  • This paper presents new drain bias scheme for the linearity enhancement of envelope tacking power amplifiers for W-CDMA base-stations. In the conventional envelope tracking power amplifiers, the drain bias voltage is lowered close to the knee voltage of transistor, resulting in the severe linearity degradation. To solve this problem, it is proposed in this paper that the amplifier is biased in the conventional class AB mode with a fixed drain bias voltage if the input envelope is low and in the envelope tracking mode otherwise. Moreover, the drain bias in the envelope tracking mode is newly determined to minimized the distortion. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed bias scheme, simulation is performed on the W-CDMA based-station envelope tracking power amplifier using class AB Si-LDMOS power amplifier. It is shown from the simulation that the proposed bias scheme allows a drastic linearity enhancement with the comparable efficiency enough to meet the requirement of W-CDMA base-station without additional linearization techniques.

  • In this paper we present an efficient solution to rotation?invariant boundary image matching. Computing the rotation-invariant distance between image time-series is a time-consuming process since it requires a lot of Euclidean distance computations for all possible rotations. In this paper we propose a novel solution that significantly reduces the number of distance computations using the envelope-based lower bound. To this end, we first present how to construct a single envelope from a query sequence and how to obtain a lower bound of the rotation-invariant distance using the envelope. We then show that the single envelope-based lower bound can reduce a number of distance computations. This approach, however, may cause bad performance since it may incur a larger lower bound by considering all possible rotated sequences in a single envelope. To solve this problem, we present a concept of rotation interval, and using the rotation interval we generalize the envelope-based lower bound by exploiting multiple envelopes rather than a single envelope. We also propose equi-width and envelope minimization divisions as the method of determining rotation intervals in the multiple envelope approach. Experimental results show that our envelope-based solutions outperform existing solutions by one or two orders of magnitude.

  • This paper describes a new algorithm for encoding spectral envelope in the time domain alias cancellation (TDAC) part of G.729.1. The spectral envelope and modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) coefficients of the weighted code-excited linear predictive (CELP) coding error in lower-band and the higher-band input signal are encoded in the TDAC part. In order to reduce allocation bits for spectral envelope coding, a new algorithm using sub-band correlation between adjacent frames is proposed. In addition, to improve the quality of decoded signals, two bit allocation strategies using reduced bits from the proposed algorithm are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in terms of objective quality and bit reduction rates. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm increases the quality of sounds significantly.

  • The purpose of this study is to present rational methods of multi-criteria optimization of the envelope of buildings. The object is to determine the optimum R-value of the envelope of a building, based on the following criteria: minimum building costs (including the cost of materials and construction) and yearly heating costs. Mathematical model described heat losses and gains in a building during the heating season. It takes into consideration heat losses through wall, roof, floor and windows. Particular attention was paid to have a more detailed description of heat gains due to solar radiation. On the assumption that shape of building is rectangle in order to solve the problem, optimum R-value of the envelope of a building is determined by using non-linear programing methods(Kuhn-Tucker Conditions). The results constitute information for designers on the optimum R-value of a building envelope for energy saving buildings.

  • JSRV, which causes sheep lung cancer, is known to have the transforming activity of NIH3T3 cells. Especially Envelope protein of this virus has the transforming activity to NIH3T3. To know the effects on the transcriptional activity of transcription factors by this viral protein transient transfection was performed by using the luciferase reporter system. The result showed that JSRV Envelope protein increased the transcriptional activity of NF-kB and AP-1.

  • This research is concerned for improving the result of speech recognition under the noisy speech. We knew that spectral subtraction and recovery of valleys in spectral envelope obtained from noisy speech are more effective for the improvement of the recognition. In this research, the averaged spectral envelope obtained from vowel spectrums are used for the emphasis of valleys. The vocalic spectral information at lower frequency range is emphasized and the spectrum obtained from consonants is not changed. In simulation, the emphasis coefficients are varied on cepstral domain. This method is used for the recognition of noisy digits and is improved.
