In this study, the droplet size distribution of a slit injector at different surrounding conditions, such as air flow and fuel temperature, were investigated. Phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) was utilized to investigate the initial droplet size distribution and the effect of fuel temperature and air flow on droplet size distribution. The entrained air motion was also evaluated by the temporal velocity profile of droplets. When the air flow velocity increased, the small droplets were more entrained to the upper and central parts of the spray and this tendency was confirmed by plotting the temporal velocity profile of droplets. This entrainment of small droplets at high airflow velocities caused relatively small mean droplet size at upper and central parts of the spray and the large mean droplet size at downstream and edge of the spray, compared to that of low airflow velocities. The total mean droplet size, obtained by averaging the size of all droplets measured at all test locations, decreased when the high airflow velocities were applied. The increased fuel temperature, with an airflow velocity of 10m/s, caused reduced droplet size at all test locations. However, the decreased value of mean droplet size at high fuel temperatures was relatively higher at upper parts of the spray, compared to downstream, as a result of enhanced entrainment of small droplets to upper parts of the spray.

This study examines the effect of acoustic excitation using forced coaxial air on the flame characteristics of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. A resonance frequency was selected to acoustically excite the coaxial air jet due to its ability to effectively amplify the acoustic amplitude and reduce flame length and NOx emissions. Acoustic excitation causes the flame length to decrease by 15 % and consequently, a 25 % reduction in EINOx is achieved, compared to a flame without acoustic excitation. Moreover, acoustic excitation induces periodical fluctuation of the coaxial air velocity, thus resulting in slight fluctuation of the fuel velocity. From phase-lock PIV and OH PLIF measurement, the local flow properties at the flame surface were investigated under acoustic forcing. During flame-vortex interaction in the near field region, the entrainment velocity and the flame surface area increased locally near the vortex. This increase in flame surface area and entrainment velocity is believed to be a crucial factor in reducing flame length and NOx emission in coaxial jet flames with acoustic excitation. Local flame extinction occurred frequently when subjected to an excessive strain rate, indicating that intense mass transfer of fuel and air occurs radially inward at the flame surface.
Light is a major environmental signal for entrainment of the circadian clock, but little is known about the phototransduction pathway triggered by light-activation of photoreceptive molecule(s) responsible for the phase shift of the clock in vertebrates. The chicken pineal gland and retina contain the autonomous circadian oscillators together with the photic entrainment pathway, and hence they provide useful experimental model for the clock system. We previously demonstrated the expression and light-dependent activation of rod-type transducin $\alpha$-subunit (Gtl$\alpha$) in the chicken pineal gland. It is unlikely, however, that the pineal Gt$_1$$\alpha$ plays a major role in the photic entrainment, because the light-induced phase shift is unaffected by bloking the signaling function of Gt$_1$$\alpha$. Here, we show the expression of G 11 $\alpha$, an $\alpha$-subunit of another heterotrimeric G-protein, in the chicken pineal gland and retina by cDNA cloning, Northern blot and Western blot analyses. GIl$\alpha$-immunoreactivity was colocalized with pinopsin in the chicken pineal cells and it was found predominantly at the outer segments of photoreceptor cells in the retinal sections, suggesting functional coupling of G11 $\alpha$ with opsins in the both the tissues. By coimmunoprecipitation experiments using the retina, we showed the light- and GTP-dependent interaction between rhodopsin and G11 $\alpha$. Upon ectopic expression of a Gq/ 11-coupled receptor in cultured pineal cells, pharmacological (non-photic) activation of endogenous G11 induced phase-dependent phase shifts of the melatonin rhythm in a manner very similar to the effect of light. These results suggested opsin-G11 pathway contributing to the photic entrainment of the circadian clock.
In order to understand the behavior of transient gaseous injection used in an LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine, turbulent incompressible transient jets with butane and propane were measured and analyzed at pressures of 1.5 bar and 2.0 bar with injector diameters of 3 mm and 5 mm. Mie-scattering method with a tracer was used, and images were processed to investigate the behavior of butane and propane jets. Distances from the nozzle to transition region were measured as $L_e/d_{inj}$=4.35~19.4, where $L_e$ and $d_{inj}$ indicate respectively a distance from nozzle to transition point and nozzle diameter. Slits and tubes around jet at near-field were introduced to measure the effect of entrainment and the diameter of jet, which revealed that the entrainment of surrounding air is significant for developing jet diameter. When the entrainment is restricted, the behavior of jet became deviating from the baseline. It was found that the virtual origin located outside of a nozzle towards jet tip within the conditions of this work, and its location was estimated as $x_o/d_{inj}$=0.56~7.25, where $x_o$ is a distance from nozzle to virtual origin.

In this study, the performance of an ejector in the refrigeration cycle was experimentally studied using R600a. The performance of the ejector is analyzed according to the inlet pressure and nozzle position. The increase in the primary nozzle pressure decreased the pressure difference across the ejector. In the low entrainment region, the increased suction flow pressure led to an increase in the pressure difference. In the high entrainment region, the pressure difference was inversely proportional to the suction pressure. The effects of nozzle position ($L_n$) were also analyzed and for $L_n<0$, the decreased suction chamber volume led to a large pressure drop with the small increase in the suction mass flow rate. For $L_n>0$, the increased $L_n$ disturbed the primary nozzle flow and thus an increase in the primary nozzle flow increased the pressure lifting effect. In contrast, the increased suction mass flow rate decreased the pressure difference. When the nozzle outlet was located at the mixing part entrance ($L_n=0$), the ejector showed the highest pressure lifting effect.

The Coanda effect is the tendency for a fluid jet to atach itself to an adjacent surface and follow its contour without causing an appreciable flow separation. The jet is pulled onto the surface by the low pressure region which develops as entrainment pumps fluid from the region between the jet and the surface. Then the jet is held to the wall surface by the resulting radial pressure gradient which balance the inertial resistance of the jet to turning. The jet may attach to the surface and may be deflected through more than 180 dog, when the radius of the Coanda surface is sufficiently large compared to the height of the exhaust nozzle. However, if the radius of curvature is small, the jet turns through a smaller angle, or may not attach to the surface at all. In general, the limitations in size and weight of a device will limit the radius of the deflection surface. Thus much effort has been paid to improve the jet deflection in a variety of engineering fields. The Coanda effect has long been applied to improve aerodynamic characteristics, such as the drag/lift ratio of flight body, the engine exhaust plume thrust vectoring, and the aerofoil/wing circulation control. During the energy crisis of the seventies, the Coanda jet was applied to reduce vehicle drag and led to drag reductions of as much as about 30% for a trailer configuration. Recently a variety of industrial applications are exploiting another characteristics of the Coanda jets, mainly the enhanced turbulence levels and entrainment compared with conventional jet flows. Various industrial burners and combustors are based upon this principle. If the curvature of the Coanda surface is too great or the operating pressure too high, the jet flow will break away completely from the surface. This could have catastrophic consequences for a burner or combustor. Detailed understanding of the Coanda jet flow is essential to refine the design to maximize the enhanced entrainment in these applications.

The effect of triangular multi-tabs attached at the perimeter of jet nozzle on flow structure in the near field was investigated experimentally. A stereoscopic PIV(SPIV) system was employed to measure three orthogonal velocity components of the 3-D turbulent jet. In this study, two different types of sharp-edged jet nozzle having 4, 8 tabs were tested at the Reynolds number of Re=10,000. SPIV measurements were carried out at 5 cross-sectional planes. Six hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each experimental condition and they were ensemble averaged to get spatial distributions of turbulent statistics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity. Entrainment rate of surrounding fluid into the tabbed jets was estimated using the measured 3-D velocity field data. The strong vortex structure was induced for the jet flow with 4 tabs, increasing entrainment rate.
A thermal vapor compressor in which the subsonic/supersonic flow appears simultaneously, has been accurately designed through the CFD analysis for the various shape parameters such as the primary nozzle shape, converging duct shape, mixing tube diameter, and so on. The performance of the developed thermal vapor compressor has been experimentally verified to be installed in a Multi Effect Desalination(MED) plant as an important element. In this paper, the effects of each parameter are discussed on the basis of CFD results and the experimental results for various boundary conditions(motive pressure, suction pressure, and discharge pressure) are presented in compared with CFD results. The two results show a good agreement with each other within 2 % accuracy with regard to the entrainment ratio.

The combustion characteristics of methane oxygen diffusion flames have been investigated to give basic information for designing industrial oxyfuel combustors. NOx reduction has become one of the most determining factors in the combustor design since the small amount of nitrogen is included from the current low cost oxygen production process. Flame lengths decreased with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhancement of mixing effect. Correlation equation between flame length and turbulent kinetic energy was proposed. NOx concentration was reduced with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhanced entrainment of the product gas into flame zone as well as the reduction of residence time in combustion zone.
The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of geometry parameter on the ejector performance. The CFD results were verified with available experimental data. Flow field analysis was also carried out in this study. Variation on the geometry parameter was made by varying the angle of converging duct those are $0.5^{\circ}$, $2.0^{\circ}$ and $3.5^{\circ}$. The converging duct with an angle of $0.5^{\circ}$ gives the highest value of entrainment ratio that is 0.941. Furthermore, from this study it can be concluded that the entrainment ratio decreases with respect to the increase of angle of convergence duct.
