본 연구는 한국의 경영 대학 학생들을 대상으로 특수 목적 관련 집중 교양영어 수업을 실시하여 나타난 결과이다. 이 연구는 학생들이 앞으로 학습할 전공 관련 과목들의 영어 습득 능력을 향상시키기 위한 방법으로 특수 목적 관련 집중 교양영어 수업 계획을 진행시켰다. 학생들의 영어 실력 향상도와 학업 성취도를 알아 보기위해 실험 전인 학기 초에 미리 테스트를 실시했고 실험이 끝난 학기 말에 역시 테스트를 실시하여 결과를 비교해보았다. 실험 학기 동안 학생들은 영어 기초 지식 관련 일반 교양영어 수업이 아닌 경영학 전공과 관련된 교재, 학습 활동, 과제 등을 통한 수업을 진행하였다. 연구 결과 특히 성적이 낮은 학생들의 학업 성취 향상도가 두드러졌다. 이는 학생들의 교양 영어 학습목적이 전공 관련 특수 목적 영어 학습이라는 이유 때문에 학생들의 학습동기가 높았다는 것이 주된 이유로 나타났다.

This paper presents a comparative study on the effectiveness of teaching an engineering course using English with Specific Purpose(ESP). A study was performed using student groups; one class using ESP, and one class conducted in English with an English text. The course conducted using ESP showed the greatest improvement in English writing and conversation, and the students reported a greatly increased confidence in their ability to function professionally using English. A self-assessment of each student was conducted before and after the courses. Prior to the course less than 10% in each group felt that they are able to: a) understand a textbook, b) write an email, c) generate a project report, or d) follow a lecture given in English. The survey at the end of the course showed that the ESP teaching style resulted in significant improvements in students ability and confidence with writing and speaking in English, whereas reading skills were similar for both groups. This is due to the ESP method, in which students are required to give presentations and keep journals in English. After a brief review of the ESP principles and a discussion of how they were implemented, the background data of the participants(students) are described. Finally, the end-of-semester survey highlights the efficacy of the ESP approach.

This paper analyzed the effect of using a content-based English textbook in teaching English to Korean college students. The textbook reflected the recent trend in EFL/ESL development that subject matters should be taught as part of the language instruction. The analysis of the questionnaire survey conducted to college students at the end of the semester revealed an encouraging result that this new type of ELT college textbook is effective in helping Korean college students prepare for learning their subject areas through English. Based on this positive outcome, a suggestion is made that the current general purpose college English teaching curriculum be shifted toward a content-based specific purpose type to accommodate the increasing demand of learning subject areas through English in colleges in Korea.

Objectives: This study analyzes the demands of dental hygiene college students for English courses and proposes ways to improve English courses for college students majoring in dental hygiene that would take advantage of English for specific purposes (ESP) in the future. Methods: Using a structured questionnaire, four universities by region with departments of dental hygiene were selected at random, and out of a total of 260 college students majoring in dental hygiene, data of 258 students, excluding data with missing values, were considered for investigating the needs of English curriculum development using the SPSS program. Results: Total 82.1% of the students expected English programs, and they said that English was important, The proposal for English curriculum development indicated that although the number of English programs was sufficient, diversification of English programs or changes in methods of managing classes were required. As for the need for English programs (66.4%), they required more ESP, such as practical English for dental or dental terminology, which can be used clinically and more than English for general purposes (EGP). Conclusions: Students in dental hygiene showed a higher demand for more professional ESP that can use clinically as dental hygienists in the future. It is necessary to consider the reorganization of the curriculum or changes in the method of managing English classes by reflecting one demands of dental hygiene students.

최근 2018 동계올림픽을 비롯하여 동계 스포츠의 국제화에 대한 관심이 많고 특히 우리나라에서 강세를 보이는 빙상의 경우, 빙상 지도자의 영어 의사소통 능력이 특히 요구된다. 본 연구는 빙상 영어 수업에 대한 자기 인식 조사와 직무 분석을 실시하고 이에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 단기간에 효과적인 빙상 영어 수업을 제공할 수 있는 방법 제안을 제안하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 빙상 지도자 27명이 설문에 응하였다. 설문에 응한 빙상 지도자들은 대부분 본인의 영어 실력에 자신감이 없는 것으로 나타났고, 빙상 지도자들을 위한 영어 수업이 필요하다고 생각하고 있었으며, 빙상 지도자들을 위한 영어 수업은 말하기나 듣기에 초점을 둔 다양한 활동 중심의 수업을 원하였다. 이후 DACUM 위원회를 구성하여 영어가 필요한 직무들을 선정한 후 난이도와 필요 기능을 평가하였고, 빙상 지도자들을 대상으로 설문조사를 하였다. 빙상 지도자들의 직무별 영어 교육 필요성에 대한 설문 결과를 보면, '국제대회에서의 심판이나 의사소통,' '외국인 스키어들과 대화/정보교류,' '기술지도' 임무에서 가장 많은 영어가 필요하다고 생각하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

본 연구는 스포츠 관련 학과 대학생들의 영어와 스포츠 영어 수업에 대한 자기 인식 조사를 실시하고 이에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 효과적인 스포츠 영어 수업에 대하여 제안하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위하여 스포츠 관련 전공 4학년 학생 133명이 설문에 응하였으며 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 스포츠 전공학생들의 영어에 대한 흥미 정도는 비교적 낮았는데, 이 흥미도는 영어 실력이나 다른 항목들과 유의미한 상관관계를 보였다. 2. 스포츠 전공 학생들의 본인이 생각하는 본인의 영어 실력에 대해서는 대부분의 학생들이 영어 실력에 자신감이 없는 것으로 나타났고, 이는 흥미도와 관심도와도 밀접한 상관관계가 있었다. 3. 스포츠 전공자들에게 영어 학습이 필요하다고 생각하는 학생들이 많았는데 그 이유로는 '운동선수나 지도자로서의 영어 의사소통 능력'이 가장 많았고 '국제 스포츠 교류나 외교, 행정'이 그 뒤를 이었다. 또한 4. 일반적인 영어 수업과 차별화 된 스포츠에 초점을 둔 영어 수업이 필요하다고 생각하는 학생들이 많았는데 그 이유로는 '취업에 도움이 될 수 있을 것 같아서'와 '향후 전공 직무에 도움이 될 것 같아서'가 가장 많았다.

This study aims to examine whether the fundamental frequency (F0) varies depending on languages or distinguishes between L1 (first language) and L2 (second language) speech and whether the type of materials which vary in control of consonant voicing affects the use of F0-especially, mean F0. For this purpose, we compared productions of two languages produced by Korean L2 learners of English to those of Korean-English bilingual speakers. Twelve Korean L2 speakers of English and twelve Korean-English bilingual speakers participated in this study. The subjects read aloud 22 declarative sentences-balanced and unbalanced-once in English and once in Korean. Mean F0 of Korean was higher than that of English for both speaker groups, and the difference in the value of mean F0 between the Korean and English sentences was different depending on the type of materials that the participants read. With regard to F0 range, the L2 speakers had a larger F0 range in English than in Korean; however, the effect of language on F0 range was not statistically significant for the bilingual speakers. These results indicate that language-specific properties may affect the use of F0, in particular, mean F0.

The role of social networking mobile applications such as WhatsApp in enhancing second language vocabulary learning among English language learners continues to be a subject of interest for many scholars. The current study aimed at examining medical English vocabulary learning among undergraduate students using WhatsApp compared to learning vocabulary via the Blackboard platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. To this end, 108 medical students (51 males, 57 females) enrolled in a first semester English for a specific English course participated in the study. A quasi-experimental design was adopted for two groups. Fifty-three students participated in the WhatsApp group and 55 students formed the Blackboard group. A pretest-posttest design was employed to collect data. Results of t-test scores did not show a significant difference between the WhatsApp and Blackboard groups on a vocabulary test. Results of a survey that measured students' opinion of the use of WhatsApp as a platform for learning new vocabulary showed positive perceptions since participants thought that WhatsApp enhanced their learning experience.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest the development of the Guidelines on VTS English language competency test, according to IALA Guideline 1132 - VTS Voice Communications and Phraseology. As the foundation for improving VTSOs' communication capabilities throughout their career lifecycle in terms of training, accreditation, and revalidation, a development of a VTS-specific language testing system with explicit language testing evaluation criteria becomes more critical. With the aim of facilitating the discussion, a range of suggestions to be considered in the development of Guidelines on the VTS English competency test are made

Under the current wave of globalization, engineering programs in Korea are determined to adopt an Accreditation System for Engineering Education, which is inevitable to acquire competitiveness in the world market. To meet the needs of engineering students to pursue their career as internationally qualified engineer, a development of tailored English course for them is needed. I tried to develop a Technical English syllubus as an ESP(English for specific purpose) course for engineering students based on the job description provided by O'NET(Occupational Information Network). O'NET describes and defines what kinds of abilities are needed for various workers, including engineers. Mechanical Engineer type is selected for research and 17 abilities are listed to be the most needed abilities which are over 50% in importance score and 6 language related abilities are listed among them, which shows the importance of language abilities in the engineering job sites.
