We aimed to understand how English textbooks in Korea reflect English education policies for improving the English language learners' cultural ability. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, we used the method of analyzing English textbooks because English textbooks are an important tool that most specifically reflects the English policy of a country. This study analyzed middle school English textbooks currently used in Korea. We analyzed nouns/pronouns related to cultures presented in the reading section included in each unit, and compared cultural diversity and cultural identity included in English textbooks in Korea. As a result, it was found that Korea tried to introduce the diverse cultures from the world and promote Korean traditional cultures into the world. So the cultural policy of English education in Korea can be evaluated to be appropriate for cultivating Korea young learners with the cultural capabilities which are essential to be successful leaders in the globalized world.

This study analyzed a total of 15 English textbooks currently used in South Korea. We analyzed nouns/pronouns related to culture presented in the reading section included in each unit, and compared cultural diversity and cultural identity included in English textbooks in Korea. As a result, it was found that South Korea has tried to cultivate Korean learners' cultural competence through English education and introduced their cultural pride to Western culture to realize the goal of strengthening global capabilities.

This study aims to investigate how the four college students interact with one another to discuss and construct meaning in a small reading group. Additionally, this study attempts to examine how the participants played their roles in the group. Data sources consisted of transcripts of the students' interactions, questionnaires and informal interviews, and the researchers' observation notes. The data revealed that the participants contributed fairly steadily to the interactions by checking with own grammatical knowledge, providing lexical information, understanding the micro level context, and presenting the macro level context. Several pedagogical implications are presented for the practical classroom. Findings of the study suggest effective ways to implement group activities in reading classes and a teacher's role for optimum group learning.

This essay reinterprets Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness as satirical writing. In an experience-based fictional world, Conrad places imperial precursors who present themselves with a derogatory demeanor that stems from corrupt rapacity at its forefront. This rapacity is enabled by what European colonists believe to be a noble cause, regarded as a vehicle with which to enlighten African continent in his work. This essay reads this noble cause that allows such exorbitant and corrupt rapacity as a dominant element in the construction of Conrad's characters, particularly Kurtz, as objects of satire. Kurtz ends up beginning his calamitous descent into barbarism, mockingly quite opposite to what the colonial disciples misconceive themselves to be. In exhuming the satirical elements from the novel, this paper proves the significance of reading The Heart of Darkness as satire as an alternative reading to the racist book Chinua Achebe has accused it of.

This experimental study shows that, in reading of the English isolated words that are enumerated, the releasing of the word-final stop is employed for signaling enumeration in company with the well-known intonational pattern for it. Furthermore, this study tries to find the aspects of the releasing of the stops in the word-final positions, focusing on the association of the stop releasing/nonreleasing with i) the POA (Place of Articulation) distinction of the word-final stop, ii) the various qualities of the vowel before the final stop, and iii) the voice distinction of the stop in the word-final position.

VP-ellipsis constructions in English can be schematized as S + [NP finite-AUX __ ] where the underlined part is understood to be a VP. Similarly, the pattern S + NP[-to] can be observed in Korean colloquial contexts. Though the English VP-ellipsis sentence pattern and the Korean pattern superficially seem to be similar, the Korean pattern exhibits peculiar properties: Syntactically, the NP of the pattern should have the delimiter -to. Semantically, it may convey ambiguous readings: VP-ellipsis-like and/or Stripping-like interpretation. To account for the pattern at issue, we propose a base-generated analysis driven by the delimiter -to within a construction grammar. We claim that the mother of the NP[-to] in this pattern is an S whose meaning is ambiguous between a VP-ellipsis-like and a Stripping-like reading. Consequently, the code of the VP-ellipsis in English is finite auxiliary verbs while that of the pattern S + NP[-to] in Korean is the delimiter -to.

국내외 연구결과들에 의하면 좋은 수업의 공통적 특징 중의 하나는 다양한 수업방법이다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 수업방법을 도입하여 '비즈니스 전공영어' 수업을 좋은 수업으로 만들기 위해 교수설명, 그룹활동 및 발표, 단어퀴즈, reading comprehension, 숙제 및 시험에 대한 피드백이 수업활동으로 활용되었다. 2015년과 2016년에 '비즈니스 전공영어' 수업을 수강한 3학년 39명 학생들을 대상으로 수업활동에 대한 학생들의 인식에 대해 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문조사를 분석한 결과 다음 사실들을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 학생들이 가장 선호하는 수업활동은 교수설명이었다. 둘째, 텍스트 내용 이해와 영어구문 이해에 가장 도움이 된다고 학생들이 인식하는 수업활동은 교수설명이었다. 셋째, 그룹 활동 및 발표에 대한 선호도는 높지 않았으며, 텍스트 내용 이해와 영어구문 이해에 가장 도움이 안 되는 수업활동으로 인식하고 있었다. 이러한 설문조사 결과는 영어문장 구조의 정확한 파악에 미숙한 조사대상자 학생들은 텍스트 내용의 확실한 이해를 위해 영어문장 구조에 대한 교수의 명확한 설명을 필요로 한다는 것을 보여 준다. 즉 영어수업의 경우 학생들이 선호하며 도움이 많이 된다고 인식하는 수업활동은 교과목의 특성과 학생들의 영어능숙도와 관련이 있다는 것을 시사해 주었다.

이 연구의 목적은 한국대학생들의 영어 시제습득에 관한 것이다. 이를 위해 다음과 같이 연구문제를 제시하였다 첫 번째, 영어 시제습득이 실험집단과 통제집단에 차이가 있는가? 두 번째, 영어 능숙도에 따라 영어 시제 습득에 차이가 있는가? 를 조사하였다. 이 연구의 대상은 광주소재의 C 대학교 교양 영어를 수강하는 77명의 학생들이며 실험집단 39명이고 통제 집단은 38명이었다. 이 연구를 위한 자료는 영어 시제에 관한 40문제를 제시하였고 설문지 기법을 이용하였다. 이 연구의 분석방법은 통계프로그램인 SPSS 12.0을 이용하여 t 검정 방법을 실행하였다. 분석 결과 비록 하위 집단에서는 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 실험집단과 통제집단은 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 독해지문을 활용한 영어시제 학습을 함으로써 학생들은 수업에 흥미를 가지고 참여 하였고 그 결과 실험집단이 통제집단보다 더 높은 학업 성취도를 보였다.

It is often observed that Korean migrant students overseas experience various kinds of anxieties learning English as a second language although they are in an English-speaking country like New Zealand. The context of learning English as a second language is explored by examining language anxieties experienced by recent Korean migrant students in New Zealand. 177 students were surveyed using questionnaires asking their anxieties over various contexts of English learning processes. The three stages of language anxiety of Input, Processing, and Output showed that there were some degrees of anxiety among the students at each stage depending on their ages, age at migration, and duration of residence, in particular. Students tended to experience more language anxiety in school than outside the school. It was also clear that students were experiencing more anxieties with English than with Korean in the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Writing was commonly found in English and Korean to be the most frequent source of anxiety among the four language skills. Some implications from the results are suggested for parents, teachers, and students.

성공적인 외국어 학습을 위해 필요한 요소 중 하나로 자기효능감이 주목받아 왔지만, 이와 관련된 연구 중 다수는 중등학교 학생들을 대상으로 수행된 연구들이다. 본 연구는 영어 독해와 작문 중심의 교양영어프로그램이 대학 신입생들의 자기효능감에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 자료 수집을 위하여 교양영어프로그램을 수강하는 중급반 학생을 대상으로 사전-사후 설문을 실시하였고, 해당 학생들을 지도하는 교수자들을 대상으로 영작 지도 유형을 파악하기 위한 인터뷰도 실시하였다. 학생들의 자기효능감의 사전-사후 차이를 살펴보기 위하여, 대응표본 t-test로 분석하였으며, 일원분산분석으로 교수자의 지도 유형에 따른 차이가 있는지를 통계적으로 확인하였다. 그 결과, 독해·작문 중심의 교양영어프로그램이 중급반에서 영어를 학습하는 학생들의 자기효능감에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤고, 교수자의 영작과제 부여 횟수와 운영방식에 따른 차이가 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로, 신입생을 대상으로 하는 교양영어 수업에서 학습자들의 성공적인 학습 경험을 높일 수 있는 다양한 유형의 과제 개발과 효과적인 교수자의 피드백 방식 등에 대한 후속 연구가 필요하며, 이는 학습자의 자기효능감을 높이는 데에 있어서 보다 효과적인 교양영어 수업 모델 개발로 이어질 것이다.
