  • The suspension thyristor valve can generate tremendous vertical acceleration responses in layers and large tension forces in hangers. A shaking table test of a scaled-down model of thyristor valves suspended on a hall building is performed to qualify the risk of vertical uplift of two representative types of valves, the chain valve and the rigid valve. Besides, an analytical model is established to investigate the source of the slackening of hangers. The test results show that the valves frequently experience a large vertical acceleration response. The soft spring joint can significantly reduce acceleration, but is still unable to prevent vertical uplift of the chain valve. The analytical model shows a stiffer roof and inter-story connection both contribute to a higher risk of vertical uplift for a rigid valve. In addition, the planar eccentricity and short hangers, which result in torsional motion of the valve, increase the possibility of vertical uplift for a chain valve. Therefore, spring joints with additional viscous dampers and symmetric layout in each layer are recommended for the rigid and chain valve, respectively, to prevent the uplift of valves.

  • The butterfly valve is widely used in the industrial field as an on-off or a flow control valve. When the butterfly valve is used as a flow control valve. cavitation sometimes occurs in the range of high flow rate because of the small valve opening. Therefore. the pressure loss and the cavitation characteristics are investigated by use of a commercial CFD code. The results show that the possibility of cavitation occurrence in the cryogenic butterfly valve is very high in the case of valve opening angle below 10 degree and incident velocity over 6m/s. By increasing the inlet velocity at 10 degree of valve opening angle. the value of loss coefficient increased. However. by increasing the inlet velocity at 50 degree of valve opening angle. the value of loss coefficient decreased.

  • We have developed a monoleaflet polymer valve as an inexpensive and viable alternative, especially for short-term use in the ventricular assist device or total artificial heart. The frame and leaflet of the polymer valve were made from polyurethane. To evaluate the hemodynamic performance of the polymer valve a comparative study of flow dynamics past a polymer valve and a St. Jude Medicals prosthetic valve under physiological pulsatile flow conditions in vitro was made. Comparisons between the valves were made on the transvalvular pressure drop, regurgitation volume and maximum valve opening area. The polymer valve showed smaller regurgitation volllme and transvalvular pressure drop compared to the mechanical valve at higher heart rate. The results showed that the functional characteristics of the polymer valve compared favorably with those of the mechanical valve at higher heart rate.

  • In this study, a Coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) and Finite Element Analysis(FEA) method are used to predict and evaluate the performance of an automotive shock absorber. Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the SIMPLE method and the RNG $k-\varepsilon$ is used to model turbulence. CFD analysis is carried out for different intake valve deflections and piston velocities. The force exerted on the valve in each valve deflection is obtained. The valve deflection-force relationship is investigated by the FEA method. The force exerted on the valve in each piston velocity is obtained with a combination of CFD and FEA results. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data and have shown agreement. Dependence of valve deflection as a function of piston velocity is investigated. Effects of hydraulic oil temperature change on valve behavior are also studied.

  • Recently, atmospheric contaminations has become worse due to the increased number of automobile. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve acts as a flow control to allow re-combustion of blow-by gas by having it flow from a crankcase to an inlet manifold suction tube. Also, during the fabrication of the PCV valve, micro cracks may occur in the valve body and be extended under operation. The excessive stress distribution and crack initiation on the PCV valve body would bring an unstable blow-by gas flow rate control and would cause valve failure. The purpose of this study is to examine the crack affects on the stress and strain variations on the PCV valve according to the inlet and outlet manifold under differential pressures. From the results, we can explain the behavior of the crack extension for a safe condition of PCV valve.

  • Intake/exhaust valve timing and exhaust cam lift were changed to control the internal exhaust gas recirculation (IEGR) and combustion phase of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. To measure the IEGR rate, in-cylinder gas was sampled during from intake valve close to before ignition start. The lower exhaust cam made shorter valve event than higher exhaust cam and made IEGR increase because of trapping the exhaust gas. IEGR rate was more affected by exhaust valve timing than intake valve timing and increased as exhaust valve timing advanced. In-cylinder pressure was increased near top dead center due to early close of exhaust valve. Ignition timing was more affected by intake valve timing than exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve lift 8.4 mm, while ignition timing was affected by both intake and exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve 2.5 mm. Burn duration with exhaust valve lift 2.5 mm was longer than other case due to higher IEGR rate. The fuel conversion efficiency with higher exhaust valve lift was higher than that with lower exhaust valve lift. The late exhaust and intake maximum open point (MOP) made the fuel conversion efficiency improve.

  • The proportional pressure control valve that was used to relief valve has different dynamic characteristics on each case. Because this valve has different assembling or processing error and environmental condition. However, a customer who used the relief valve wants to have a steadily performance even if the dynamic characteristics of valve was changed. For this reason, the manufacturer try to make the robust controller that has simple structure. This paper concerns about the design of robust controller that didn't affected by plant parameter's changing. The control strategy is a model reference control that conducted by on line identification problem, gradient method and Lyapunov equation. This adaptvie control law's validity that this paper deal with was confirmed by an results of step response test or hysteresis test.

  • Valve is widely used in the various industry areas to adjust and control the flow. Cavitation frequently takes place and sometimes is inevitable in various types of valve to cause the erosion damage. Therefore, how to control and minimize the effect of cavitation is still an important topic. This study numerically investigates the cavitating flow in a control valve with a perforated cage. The effects of some parameters on the cavitation are discussed. It also discusses to use the throttling steps to govern the cavitating flow. The results show that the opening degree of valve and the length of downstream divergent connection both influence the cavitation. The increase of the divergent length reinforces the cavitation. And the larger the opening of valve is, the intenser the cavitation is and the more vapor is present. The more throttling steps are helpful to decrease the cavitation.

  • This paper presents a static and dynamic characteristics of the relief valve which is a kind of direct operated pressure control valve for hydrogen compressor. The valve is consisted of a main poppet, a spring, an adjuster and a valve body. The purpose of this study is development of the simulation model for relief valve by using commercial AMESlM$^{(R)}$ tool. Poppet with sharp edge seat type and ball poppet with sharp edge seat type compare for P-Q characteristic. The dynamic simulation results are presented the operating pressure characteristics of relief valve. High pressure power unit of which maximum pressure control range is 100MPa was manufactured, and the pressure control valve was experimented using the above-mentioned power unit. The new model of pressure control valve from this results was suggested. It was confirmed that the suggested valve has a good control performance from experimental setup.

  • The present study describes flow induced noise generated from a ball valve used for a gas pipeline. Noise generation from a ball valve mainly induces by interference between unstable(or fluctuating) leakage flow and pipe wall when the ball valve is working closed or opened. To measure the positions of the noise source and the amplitude of noise with respect to measuring frequencies, a commercial acoustic camera is introduced. Noise characteristics generated by the ball valve have been performed by four valve opening rates: 30, 50, 70 and 100 percents. It is noted that 100 percent opening rate means that the valve is fully opened. Throughout the experimental measurements using the acoustic camera, the location of the noise source and the noise amplitude with respect to the frequencies for the test ball valve are clearly evaluated. It is found that the dominant frequencies come from the fluctuating flow at the downstream of the ball valve for four opening rates are observed between 3,000Hz and 3,200Hz. Maximum noise amplitude comes from the ball valve reaches 75dB at the valve opening rate of 50 percent.
