Three benefits of incorporating writing in engineering curricula are presented. The first benefit is in improving the communication skills which are essential for engineers and are attained through practice. The second benefit is in enhancing learning and is achieved by utilizing the complex process of writing to heighten the level of understanding. The third benefit, though difficult to recognize and even more difficult to promote in a society (and educational institutes) steeped in the behaviorist tradition, is in promoting meaningful learning by cultivating motivation internal to students themselves. The boundaries of writing activities are broadened to include that of stating a paragraph or even one complete sentence such that it may be incorporated in engineering without undue strain. A two-year trial of incorporating four types of writing assignments in six different courses (a total of 12 classes) at Michigan Technological University shows that writing assignments can be designed to achieve different degrees of the three aforementioned benefits. It is found that different types of writing activities need to be assigned depending on the status of course (elective vs. required) and on the composition of the students taking the course (upper division vs. lower division; majors vs. non-majors).

Given the background of so-called 'the 4th industrial revolution', universities practice computing education for non-majors to equip them with computational thinking(CT). Universities apply different courses but researches analyzing effectiveness of the courses based on CT are limited. This research is conducted to understand a computing course for non-majors is effective in terms of CT. A CT based evaluation framework is designed referring to AP Computer Science Principles. Questionnaires are developed based on the framework and applied to the course participants. As results, students' post scores are significantly higher than pre scores. In addition, there are significant differences in pre-test scores by major category while there is no difference in post-test. Humanity & social science group showed the largest difference between pre and post results with science & engineering and computer in order. In sum, it is found that this course is effective to facilitate students abilities in terms of CT, particularly for the non-computer majors.
In the future society where ICT-based digital convergence creates new value, collaborative skills among experts in various fields and SW based problem solving ability is more emphasized. Non-SW specialists are required to have SW based communication skills to effectively collaborate with SW experts to solve their problems. Therefore, SW programming curriculum for non-major college students should be different from the existing programming education for SW-majors aiming at a high level of coding ability. It is also known that diagram-based visual representation is helpful for productive communication and collaboration. In this study, we defined the SW education objectives for the non-majors as cultivating the visual programming ability for SW based problem solving. In order to accomplish this, we explored SW programming curriculum and content development model for non-majors focusing on visual representation of SW solutions. The results of this paper will help to provide appropriate SW learning model for non-majors and to cultivate practical SW capabilities.

In order to nurture talents who will lead the digital convergence era of the 4th industrial revolution that creates new knowledge and industries, research is being conducted on teaching methods that can improve the understanding of non-majors' SW concept, computational thinking ability, and convergence with majors is becoming Non-majors face difficulties in understanding and understanding the SW development environment, relevance to their major, and ability to converge. We used software education that is relatively easy to access for non-majors, and applied a demonstration-oriented model (DMM) that can be applied to beginners in SW education to understand the components and logical flow of ideas related to applications and majors used in real life. A convergence SW Learning method that combines repetitive implementation through instructor's demonstration and learner's modeling and learning motivational factors was proposed. In the experiment applying the teaching and learning method proposed in this paper, meaningful results were shown in terms of learning motivation and academic achievement in SW education.

In today's mass production/consumption society, there are many important constituents people need to have/do for their happy life. Very few People think that among those components enjoying Pro-sports in their life is essential, and Many business companies are interested in owning/operating pro-sports teams. Thus, many studies have been progressed on sports management or sports marketing domestically and abroad. This paper studied the preference relationship between subject's majors and products/service and pro-sports. We constructed hypotheses about the relationship and tested them by using ANOVA and Tuckey tests. We found significant results that preference for coke/cider is influenced by subject's majors, and that preference for pro-baseball, pro-football, and pro-basketball is also influenced by subject's major, etc. As the results, we can have important information about who are the most important customers and who should be target customers for marketing and promotion, and with the information related business companies can attain higher profitability and less loss through more effective sports marketing.
The aim of this study was to establish an university informal program roadmap, and also to draw up operational plans for human resources with core technologies of the fourth industry. To do this, first we derived university informal education program draft through experts workshop, then conducted a survey regarding the female university students' perception of educational programs and their educational needs on the 4th core technology matching programs. The following main results were obtained : First, students preferred 'hands-on training' by professionals and they wanted to be trained during summer or winter holidays or the night time during semesters. Also, they thought two hours of training per session was appropriate. Regarding these results, there was no difference depending on the majors. Second, while students had highly preferred for the courses related to data analysis, Arduino programing and VR(virtual reality), those related to 3D printing modeling were less preferred. Depending on the majors, preferred courses had different priorities, but non-preferred courses were similar regardless of majors. Based on these results, the university informal curriculum model and the operation plans for the core technologies of the fourth industry were proposed.
Objective: This paper is to analyze the impact of musical training to the fast ${\alpha}$ wave activation of the EEG. Background: EEG is neurological research method that can observe the brain function in real time. EEG can be used to determine the nervousness and relaxedness of a person who receives stimuli in a structured environment. Therefore, it is possible to interpret the functional state of human brain by the analysis of EEG. Method: The brain activities of two groups of university students in the point of RFA(Relative Fast Alpha) caused by different music are analyzed in this paper. One is the group of music majors and the other is the group of non-majors. Results: Music major and non-major groups show meaningful differences in RFA during exposed to classic and metal music. Conclusion: Learning experience on music affects RFA increment of music majors. Application: The result of this study will be used as basic data to evaluate the learning effects of students who want to study music.
Korean scientific community has recently argued that, in order to attract talented young people to the science and engineering fields, more ranking positions in the governmental office should be filled in by science and engineering majors. In this context, a special attention has been paid to the Chinese case where science and engineering majors have taken the highest places in Chinese political hierarchy. This paper examines historical and social background of the salience of science and engineering fields in modem China. A closer examination shows that the salience of science and engineering fields was resulted by the distinct historical experiences of China-the socialist reform of higher education system and Cultural Revolution. The former shaped the social conviction that humanities and social sciences are less useful than science and engineering fields. The latter even spread the idea that majoring in humanities or social sciences run the risk of political oppressions. Thus, the salience of science and engineering in China is a social phenomenon reflecting an academic hierarchy forced by the radical politics of modem China. Also, the higher proportion of science and engineering majors in the raking governmental officers has been resulted by a unique Chinese political system, in particular the personnel management system of the Chinese Communist Party that emphasizes practical experiences after college graduation. The comparison of the social position of science and engineering majors in China and Korea without taking account of such historical and social background may therefore mislead our understanding of the cause of and counterplan to the decreasing popularity of science and engineering fields in Korean universities.

In the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the foundation of software and hardware technologies through ICT, the technology to analyze the principles of information processing activities is the ability to implement programming. In this study, to improve the programming academic performance of electronics majors, firstly, we presented an effective teaching method in order to promote employment in the programming field by improving problem-solving skills and logical thinking skills in the programming field that electronics majors do not prefer. Secondly, we plan to promote intelligence informatization by converging intelligence information technology into the existing electronics industry by developing software utilization skills through programming curriculum that reflects the specificity and reality of electronics. Lastly, as computer programmers, we would like to expand creative talent education by developing learners' capabilities to cultivate smart talents who have both hardware and software capabilities.
The purpose of this study is to norm the engineering design competency test. To achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted on engineering college students nationwide using engineering design competency test developed in the precedent study, and a total of 2,859 questionnaires were analyzed. The main results are as follows. First, the national average of engineering design competency scores was 158 out of 240 points. Second, there was no significant difference between genders in engineering design competency by background variables. On the other hand, there was a significant difference by major. It was found that mechanical and construction majors have higher engineering design competency than IT and chemical/material engineering majors. Also, the scores of engineering design competency increased as the grade went up. Third, the number of courses related to engineering design did not affect by engineering design competency, but the actual number of times of experience in engineering design was affected by engineering design competency.
